Things that Sting,Bite,pinch,hurt!etc.

What about a thread compiling encounters with Thailands many and varied creepy crawlies..most of which quite harmless,some even eaten,..but a few really nasty ones as well.
One of the oddest unpleasantness I had with a Thai bug was on my way out of ChiangMai on my trusty Honda Dream to visit my Lahu friends in the mountains(nearMaeTang).
Cruising along,lovely late afternoon early evening and suddenly ...Whack something hits me on my forehead just under the helmet...automatically I put my left hand up and swat at whatever hit me...
Whatever it was..it kind of squashed a little on me,,and blew away.
For the first minute or so I figured it was just some regular type of flying beetle etc.
Then it started to burn....and burn...and throb and hurt etc.
I got up to the Lahu village...my whole head was hurting and burning by then,particularily where this damn thing had hit me.

It hurt until the next morning...
Apparently there is a ,for lack of a better transalation,"Pepper beetle" which exudes a noxious chemical ,especially when damaged...never experienced anything like it.
There must be many more stories of meeting up with a scorpion,snake,or biting ants like those bloody "mot fai daeng" or for the urbanite.. wild soi dogs?.......

Stung by tiny little scorpion several months ago.....they say the bigger the better when it comes to scorpion bites.

My whole arm ached, felt the poison in the sac under the arm pit.

Could not go to doctor as missus lost the car keys.

Bitten by a spider while I was asleep. This was in the Philippines. When I woke up, in serious pain, half of my face was swollen almost three times the normal size. Took about 8 hours for the swelling to go down, with the assistance of Benadryl.

On my first visit to Thailand years ago......I was on a forest path through a beautiful forest North of Chiang Mai on a rented 90cc Honda.....hot day.....lunch time.....found this beautiful "carpet like" large expanse of green moss under the trees, so got off the bike, had lunch.......stretched out and was almost asleep as a local family came walking down the path....and started yelling and screaming at me in Thai! ....got pretty excited!.... They explained by sign language that the little holes in the moss, where where the many Cobras that lived underneath it frequently popped out to grab the odd bird...bite the odd animal!.....So I guess I am a lucky man!

There is a beatle that when attacked can spray two chemicals that mix in an exothermic reaction and produce temperatures of 300 odd degrees. Perhaps it was one of those, but I'm noy sure if they live in Thailand.
I had a cat in Spain that just sniffed a tiny bug. Within 5 seconds the cat was foaming at the mouth, both eyes had closed and it was having trouble breathing. Eventually it was ok, but god knows what that was.

Been stung by those big black and orange flying bugs (Doohr) I think it is pronounced in Thai.

Hurts like hell and leaves a stinger under your skin that comes up in a lump if not physically removed.

Whilst golfing had a load of Mot Daeng (Red Ants) climp up my legs and get in and around my crutch which was very nasty. Those little creatures are as angry as fok when you walk over their nest and best to send the caddy in first to check if there are any around particularly under a mango tree.

Caught, released and killed a lot of snakes whilst in Thailand but fortunately never been bitten.

I got scorpions at the moment, I'm worried about the dogs.
Last Saturday whilst golfing in Ban Saray I had the ant thing too. Little fckers wait until there's quite a few of them in position before they start biting.

Once went to an outside toilet at night, as I went inside a small winged thing that looked like it had been manufactured
from small metal boxes stung me on the shoulder then dived down and stung me on the thumb, couldn't see my shoulder
but my thumb swelled up to twice it's size and lost all of it's skin to as far as the wrist.
Hurt like fuck when he stung me too

Mates wife got stung on the head, her head was ok but made her jaw and cheek swell. Bit of anaphalactic me thinks.

Got stung by a scorpion right on the tip of a finger in Saudi.
Little bugger was no more than an inch long and was lurking underneath a spanner - got me when I picked the spanner up !
Within 5 minutes my hand looked like an inflated rubber glove.
Hurt like f*ck !!!
3 days of anti-histamine injections and it returned to normal.
Still have a red ringmark on my fingertip where it got me and no feeling in the top 4mm of that finger .

And this was 25+years ago !!!!!!!

Been stung multiple times by paper wasps, fire ants, weaver ants, and an odd assortment of bees.

Which given the amount of time i spent in the bush there, is not surprising.

Are they the grey or the black scorpions?
Once in JaeHom a Thai friend was building a small house and one of the workers picked up a roof tile from the stack and then pulled his hand back quick.a grey scorpion had got him. Then he grabs the scorpion and carefully pulls out his stinger and then lets it go...Thai "Muu Baan" justice I guess...his hand was definately hurting for awhile afterwards.
Mot fai daeng are really nasty...stupidly stepped somewhere I shouldn't have out in Nong Khai area visiting Baan Chiang..must have stepped into them just before I got on the songthaew to Udon Thani.First one bite,then another and another,,the little buggers can get under a pant leg in no time ,scramble up pretty high,and then bite...had to get the Songthaew driver to stop so I could get out and rid myself of them.Little ant but what a bite!

We have mainly black scorpion. Usually I don't kill them but Laosy says that they have "many baby" so I do take them quite far away to release them.

Those centipedes...ran across them a few times,often under old style Thai houses,especially Chiang Rai area.In Doi MaeSalong (a town mostly inhabited by descendents of a section of the old Koumintang army which ended up there,Chiang Kai Chek and the rest ending up in Taiwan,and Akha hilltribe people in the surrounding hills) The people there make a crazy type of whiskey,liqour,schnapps??? with a big centipede in the bottle,much like the agave worm in mescal.....talk about a bite!!!!

It felt like a terrible burn,yet the next morning,after a painful night, there was no evident burning of the skin,which would exclude actual high temperatures
A chemical reaction affecting pain sensors in the skin?I don't know
P.S Glad to hear the cat survived...a long time ago in Ontario Canada our cat tried to bite a frog...same reaction....drooling,foaming...not a happy cat..but survived.

Their foking furious when you disturb those red ants and the problem is you don't see them until it is too late. Most golf courses in Thailand have an unwritten rule that if you land in a nest you can pick and drop the ball as far away from the fvckers as possible but not closer the hole.

I remember Steve Irwin (sadly deceased crocodile hunter) saying that he has swam with great white sharks and fought with crocodiles, caught the most deadly snakes in the world by hand but was scared shitless of those Mot Daeng.

We have catapilars in Spain that have hairs that often rub off their backs.
Get a hair blow into your eye it's very possible to lose your sight in that eye. Nasty.

The giant black scorpions are virtually harmless and aren't aggressive at all. Always makes me laugh when ya see that scorpion queen woman here that lies in a glass cass with hundreds of them for world records!! What will she do next spend five days in a glass tank with some kittens?
