    Flora / Fauna Pics

Started working my way through the thousands of photos taken on my recent trips North and Cambodia.

The first lot I've prepared are of the various bugs and flowers I photographed.

Unfortunately I've used up all my TD phot storage space so I'm at the mercy of DD to complete this thread never mind all the others.

Unfortunately the weather wasn't great for most of the trip so using a macro lens is difficult because the wider aperture really limits the depth of field, sometimes as low as 2 or 3mm, great for some pics but awful for others...such as this caterpillar, I was trying to focus on the drop of water stuck to it, but it just meant that even the head is not sharp....

This stick insect isabout 4mm diameter and I had to use an extension ring to focus in this close, but again very very little DoF. At least he was still, the lens is not more than a quarter of an inch from him.

This is actually taken with a 400mm lens and therefore able to us flash......but to get it I couldn't see through the view finder and had to rely on auto-focus.....could be a tad sharper

    Stick to the temples....

By the way, found an interesting Temple near the farm, across the river and up a bit.

You can practice the wildlife photography, i will give you some tips, then you can go and snap the temple......

Nice pics Bob. I look forward to more flora and fauna. Just as interesting as the landscape/travel stuff for me.

Thanks to DD I can continue the thread.....

I forget what these buggers are called....

This ant was awesome, all covered in spikes and quite large. Sadly this was one of the shots without enough light to increase the DoF....that said, I quite like the shot.

Again, lack of DoF spoiled this shot, would have been nice to have the whole of the bee in focus, but I'm happy enough with the wings.

Brilliant pictures Bobcock. Nice to see one of the dayglo pink Dragonfly, I have wasted several sets of batteries trying to snap that one.

This fellow stayed quite still for a while, I didn't have the right lens for the occassion but he was patient and gave me the chance to do the best with what I had.

This is quite the biggest spider I have ever seen in the wild. I was in a cave in Chiang Dao. The grasshopper it is eating, you can see the leg and body is quite a biggie, the same as seen on the food carts. It was very dark and difficult to focus, but I just about got it.

Yeah, give the man some space!

Great shots Bobcock. Love the dragon fly shot and the 100 legs shot. Both taken on backgrounds with great colors in the stone.

DD has given me more space, in fact it is the third time he has done so.

I certainly do prepare all my shots for the web, but I now have hundreds and hundreds on here, with a lot of new ones to come.

The third picture in post #6. If i stare at it for long enough, it starts to undulate. Very weird.

Maybe i have been imbibing too much lately. Still great pics though.

I had a quick look through the pics again this morning and found a few more worth posting.....

This last one shows the problem with having such a small depth of field....this orchid is no more than 15mm high, it was murky and raining so i had to use the fasted speed possible which using f2.8 and an extension tube gives me about 2mm depth of field as you can see.

    superb BC!

Specifically, what lenses did you use?

Did you use a tripod? I just started using a monopod for some of my video stuff, have you used one of those? Easy to carry/work with.

probably a variety of lenses for these, the macro would be the 100 USM 2.8 macro and the 50 USM 1.4 with an extension tube. The spiders were taken with the 70-200L IS USM 2.8 (63,000, but I got a near new one for 30,000 last month). The green dragonfly was with the 100-400L IS USM 4.0.

I don't think any of these were with a tripod, but i do tend to carry one all the time, and yes, I do use a monopod, but only when I'm taking pics of rugby.

great photos here Bobcock. never thought shallow depth of field might be such a problem, most of us using point and shoot cams got the other problem really

Bobcock, you have encouraged me to want to go out and take some phots right now. Somehow, I am less likely to post my pics for viewing after viewing your fine display. Good work.

Found a few more worthy of work whilst sorting out the major pics of the holiday. I must say i like the ant the more I see it, here's another view of it, the motion adds to the shot which i didn't think when I first saw them.
