    Chiang Rai

Up to Chiang Rai for a couple of days.

Hit the Opium Museum and the Golden Triangle Park. Damn smog is up in Chiang Rai also. Really didn’t to make much of a difference where we were. The “smog” is quite apparent from Bangkok up to Chiang Rai. Up in the Chiang Rai area we saw a couple of burns or fires in progress and plenty of scorched areas post burn.

Opium Museum was packed with Chinese tourists for the first half hour we were hen then it cleared out. THB 50 pp so a reasonable cost. Food is also quite reasonable here.

Was here first time about 25 years ago – not developed at all. Had a tour van with myself and two other tourists, plus a Thai who, well, supposedly spoke English. Flew up from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and even had to wait a day for enough passengers to fill the flight. My original flight was cancelled due to lack of passengers. Next day we flew up. That was a combination package tour of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

Wife and I visited about fifteen years ago. Then it had developed into a tourist trap. Lots of hill tribe kids begging – cute and in uniform and they were making a killing. Tourists almost lining up to take their pictures with them.

Today, no hill tribe folk in sight. Kinda surprising. Fully expected to see a bunch at the Golden Triangle Park. Something has definitely changed.

You don't notice it so much daytime, but driving from Sarm Liem ( 3 corners/sides - Golden Triangle) to Chiang Saen 7kms away via the river road at night time, the hideous, revolting, sickening, obscene neon lit monstrosities built on the other side of the river in Laos reveal all that is wrong with a corrupt govt and what happens with Burmese, Lao and Chinese money laundering drug profits.
