    NE Nan Province Earthquakes

Was awake just after 4:00am when a strong earthquake came through. Our bed is aligned north south and was swaying in roughly that direction. Wind chime and hanging wine glasses were clinking. There was a roar/rumble like a train crossing a metal bridge. There was no up or down movement. Surprisingly our dogs didn't react. At first light I checked everything around the house and found no issues.

Looked it up via TMD and it was a 5.9 just over the border in Laos and only 40 kilometers away. And shallow, only 5 kilometers.

The TMD site is showing many pre and after-shocks, none of which we felt. But just had another quake that felt just a little less than the 4:00am event. Again just lateral movement, no up and down. But a bit scary. Not yet on the TMD site. Again, no reaction from the dogs except they stopped doing what they were doing while it happened, same as the wife and I.

Wow! Last one 6.4 and very shallow. Noise level lower than the 4:00am one.

Felt in Bangkok as well according to BP. Has a video of swaying lights.

Several months back I read online the majority of a detailed risk analysis for earthquakes in Thailand. It was a really thorough analysis and geographically went down to quite small areas. I took some comfort that this part of Nan province had a zero probability for earthquake damage. May still be correct, I'm yet to see anything about damage in the areas close to the epicentre. But I was up there within 15 kilometers of it last week and the area is mountainous and with the number of landslides already there, quite unstable.

Maybe of interest - although the map could be a bit misleading as there's no information from Laos so you can't see how/if the fault zones link up in the north.

Quite a bit of activity the last month or so. Doi Saket (suburb of CM) had a 4 point something that we felt last month.

You want to get yourselves down to the Korat Plateau, nice and stable here!

In fact, nothing ever happens in Korat...

Had another look around the place after the second larger quake. Only damage I can see is the passionfruit I heard drop off the vine closet to our bedroom window during the first 4:00am quake. Hoping the rural and hill tribe folks closer to the epicentre have been spared as well.

That's interesting. Would seem to indicate our house is sitting pretty much on top of the active PUA fault. This morning's quake came from just inside Laos. The maps in the online report I read also showed the known dormant faults of Thailand and there were several up and down Nan province including to the east of the PUA fault and close to the Laos border. Perhaps not as dormant as thought. Going to see if I can find it again.

One of our customer's power plants in Laos (Hongsa plant) just tripped-out of service this morning, due to this earthquake.

We are mobilizing our manpower tomorrow to get them started up again.
