Pai Police to try and stop female tourists being raped

Pai police to overhaul protection services for tourists

Following an attempted rape of a German tourist on July 23, the police in Pai have re-structured their methods and will institute new measures to safeguard tourists who visit the famous town up north.
Police Col. Wanchai Suwansirikate, Superintendent of the Amphur Pai Police Station, announced that new guidelines in cooperation with the Tourist police will take effect and more information on safety and security will be provided to tourists.
Police Col. Suwansirikate added that cooperation from guest house owners, resort operators and restaurant owners is crucial to maintain safety in the city. He has requested that they report any suspicious incidents or behavior as well as unlicensed tour guides that prey on visitors.

They get paid peanuts. The problem will never be resolved unless they start paying them properly and that wont happen anytime soon.

    They're lucky to get peanuts.

In 2009, the Thai Police and justice system on the holiday island of Phuket were accused of corruption and over-reaction by tourists visiting the island.[14] In one case an Australian woman was arrested and accused of stealing a bar mat. She spent four nights in jail and had her passport confiscated. Then she faced a wait of another 14 weeks on bail until the next phase of her prosecution. This is despite friends of hers confessing to the police that they had placed the bar mat in the woman's bag as a joke.[15] Eventually the case was resolved after the intervention of governor of Phuket, Wichai Praisa-nob, after being contacted by Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and the Foreign Ministry. A deal was done under which she would plead guilty, she would be fined, and governor Wichai Praisa-nob would pay the fine and give an apology. After this her passport was returned and she was allowed to return to Australia.

If anyone was in any doubt about the Thai penchant for puerile nastiness then that case would be sufficient to convince the most naive and vacuous, except Jeff of course.

Of course this is a huge part of the problem. Under paid people world wide indulge in corruption.

    Way it is.

Dick, reckons a good first-step, might be to instruct the 'good' general to stop making demeaning, insulting comments towards rape victims...

Educate the young Somchai to respect women and their bodies - (yes, even farang women) ..increase the sentence for rapists..

*A campaign to educate/inform the tourists (especially the pretty ones) that Thais can be dangerous and practice good street smarts while partying... i.e don't drink till ya comatose or jump into Somchai's taxi naively thinking he'll take me straight home - no worries mate...

I've been to Pai. Its full of tree huggers. The type who naively think that everyone is as friendly and peaceful as they are.
Nobody should live in fear of getting raped but some of these young backpackers really do have to get some street sense when travelling in SE Asia.

Beaches have been banished from Pai leading to little or no use for bikinis. That's a first step, yes. Kudos the BIB.

    The good general brain-stormed...

They all need to wear "Please don't rape me" t-shirts... (only the pretty ones of course)..

Anti-rape amulets work like a charm too... I see a niche business opportunity emerging...
