Yeah, it was just a cross-cultural misunderstanding.

Gave Garye a bit of a scare at the time.

Does anyone know, remember Mariannne, who lives just outside of Chiang Mai(Mae Rim area).
The place she used to run was called "Baan Raak Saat" (Love Animal House).
She used to have this amazing Asian black bear.I actually got to know him a little. He liked it when you rubbed his gums with your fingers.I know that sounds weird, but this bear just loved it,and he would lean up against you and hold his mouth partially open.I have all ten fingers(last time I counted) at present so although sounding a bit risky,no harm done.I have heard since that he met an untimely demise, true or not??
I also was a mentor or sorts to a Rhesus monkey named Mohawk.I renamed him Oscar, after the character Oscar Madison from the "Odd Couple" movie and TV series. My job was just to sit in the enclosure with him for company and to mellow him out a little.Apparently he didn't like woman(people) that much(past experiences???) These monkeys are bloody intuitive.Once I went in,feeling very low about life in general.I sat down,as usual, avoiding direct eye contact(never make direct aggressive eye contact or show your teeth even when smiling when your sitting with monkeys!!!!
Anyway...Oscar must have picked up on my blue mood.
He moved towards me,put his face to my face and gently grabbed me by my ears
and pulled my face to him...nose to nose..and he looked right into my eyes .
It was a very interesting moment, you know how your pet dogs eyes can sometimes seem to convey a sense of understanding? Oscar did that ...he seemed to say" I feel for you man." Then he sat down beside me and checked my pockets for peanuts.(always had a couple stashed). He was a real cool monkey..wonder if he is still around?
Marianne use to have some Lampang cows and Buffaloes and other scarcer livestock breeds. One day one of her cows got loose and proceeded to eat far too much green grass, bloating up and keeling over in short order.
The workers came running Pell Mell to Marianne and myself and we rushed to the scene.Poor cow was on its side and in considerable distress.

"Quick" Marianne yells "get a knife"
A slightly better than Exacto knife appears.and then a razor blade.
"We have to relieve the air" she says
The blade is handed to me.....Yes I have watched M*A*S*H but that is as far as my medical training goes.
"Cut in between these two ribs"
The next thing I know I am cutting into a living piece of sirloin!!!
Finally,a little air does seem to escape.
in the meantime a pickup arrives and "Bessie"(for lack of a better name) is manhandled aboard.
Off we race to 2 Vets with no luck. Finally she finds an Army Vet at his home who does what I did ,only slightly lower on the ribcage stomach area and way bigger hole.
Postscript.....Next morning the cow was dead in the barn anyway..
    moral of the story
    "Up to You"
It was a very interesting time that I spent at Marianne"s cut short mainly by the fact that I left there for about a week and when I came back my things had been pilfered..gone where my trusty old camera, some wood sanding and polishing equipment etc.
    Ce la vie

She also had all sorts of abandoned dogs.In one case a pure bred racing dog arrived...the owner..a rich Thai with more money than sense decided to buy this finicky dog and then realized soon there after that he actually had to take care of him.
By the time he got to Marianne's he was a sorry sight indeed.
I picked out hundreds of creepy crawlies from that poor thing, daubing him afterwards in that purple stuff that they use.
That dog never ever let me near him again......! probably because it hurt when I twisted them bugs out of him.
Ran like hell when he saw me! He could run again because I pulled all of those bugs off of him. That plus good food and a clean place to sleep.

How about the time I witnessed a "possession" even though I don't really believe in all that stuff. To me Buddhism ,are some basic helpful hints on how to get through this life.
    Back to the story!
One time I was going up to visit my Lahu family.I was taking along a German guy with his Thai girlfriend/We had 2 motorcycles(Honda Dreams)
He was living in Baan Pa Bong outside of MaeTang renting a nice little piece of property. His girlfriend was from Lamphun and not a hill tribe girl for sure.
Before we started our climb to the village,my friends girlfriend needed to go to the can.Off to the out house at the last post store and back...all seemed fine.
Part way up the mountain and my friends Dream started to act up.stalling out, very strange for a Honda Dream. Then my bike started to sputter.I had had this bike for awhile and nothing like this had ever happened before.
Eventually...after many stalls...we made it to the Lahu village.
After having something tp eat I had a snooze...got up later noon and continued to visit.
Suddenly...there was a bit of commotion outside.
Apparently my German friends girlfriend had wandered off..a rather strange thing for a Thai girl to do in a hill tribe village..Thai's are generally somewhat suspect of hill tribe people.
Dusk was upon us before she was finally found,on the mountain road about a half klick away from the village, thats a lot of walking for a town girl.
As she was escorted into the bamboo house it was apparent that she was not herself...
    More to come..

Her demeanor had changed entirely. Her voice sounded more rough and masculine.
They sat her down,we were all already sitting (2 Falang the rest Lahu's)
Now I know for a fact that this girl didn't smoke...cigarettes or anything else!
Yet ..she was asking for a smoke, and not just a smoke but a hill tribe corn silk style smoke...and then she wants a shot of booze.
I couldn't understand entirely what she was saying as it wasn't exactly Thai...yet this was no hill tribe girl for sure!
My host(still in contact with this Lahu family to this day) started explaining
    She was possessed he says.
Then he asked us Did you have any stops or trouble coming up here?(to the mountain village)
Her boyfriend and I both remembered that suddenly just before we started climbing up the mountain road on our Honda "Dreams" his girlfriend felt the urge to go to the WC at a small roadside ,restaurant, gas sold in a bottle, place.
And on the way up both of our bikes were acting up,very strange for the usually dependable "Dream"
In the meantime the local expert in these matters,is having a serious conversation with her, eventually after a few shots of local hooch and corn silk cigs she starts to conk out,and the guy who seems to know what he's doing is saying a few magical sounding words over her.
My host continues explaining...that's one of those wandering lost ghosts he says, not wanting to give up the earth. This particular spirit,of an old "Thai Yai " guy, saw an opportunity to gain access to this girls body when she was squatting down to have a dump.He really didn't want anything more than to just taste a smoke and a drink again,it had been a long time apparently.
The reason I couldn't quite understand her was because she was speaking "Thai Yai"dialect. As mentioned this girl was from the Lampang area originally and no hill tribe girl for sure. How this language came out of her mouth...????
The discussion that followed was basically telling him that what he had done was not so nice in possessing her and please leave this girl alone after you've had your drink and smoke, which apparently the old spirit agreed to.
She slept until next morning with seemingly no recollection of anything. Her last memory was feeling very hot and flushed and having the need to go out for some fresh air, they found her about 2 hours later in the dark on a bungle road alone sitting on a rock. The whole being brought back and talking and demanding whiskey and everything else she had no memory of.
    Weird Eh!
I am personally super skeptical...but this one has always been a bit of a puzzler for me.I'm sure there must be a logical explanation.

by the way..does anyone know how to see ghosts?.
My wife and others from the Muu Baan have told me that if you take the saliva of a dog and rub it over your eyelids, and bend over and look through your legs you can see spirits(if they are around presumably) this is preferably done around dusk.
    Can't say that I've tried it...any takers?

No, my wife really believes all that..even after close to 6 years here in Canada.
Maybe I didn't get all the details.Perhaps it needed to be a special kind of dog..maybe rabid...either way my guess is that when you've got your head between your legs with dog spit on your eyes who knows what you might end up seeing!!

Rubbing the saliva of a rabid dog on your eyes doesn't sound very healthy. I think i'll give that one a miss.

    Good stories though.

There used to be a liquor store close to Chiang Khan Rd(more of a glorified Soi really)
The same Soi where the Lanna Muay Thai camp is(run by Andy)
Close to the 7 11 opposite side was a store which sold Canadian Whiskey.
When I come back for a visit I will bring some with me. Those in favor say ..."I"

    Any luck yet Stroller?
    Anyone ever eaten dog?
    I haven't(knowingly)
However there was that that time once when
I went to help some Thai friends build a very modest Thai house in a small muu baan not too far from Phayao.
I remember the first task was the digging of the nine posts holes, followed by a monk coming by with some blessings..we also put some money into one of the holes...I believe it was 9 Baht.
It really is amazing how some of these rural carpenters can actually make a reasonably plumb line, frame doors etc. with the most rudimentary equipment
Within a week the roof was up,cement roof tiles in place, walls, and a door.
It was time for a feed!

First,an electric light was strung up,across a small field with a long extension cord, from the neighbors house.
Then a guy on a beat up motor bike,I think it was one of those old 'Honda Wings' shows up,with plastic bags full of hooch.
    Wicked stuff
Then the food starts to show..the two main dishes look like variations of 'Laarb' but the cooked kind,,not 'Laarb dip'( raw)
The first dish hmmm...spicy...a bit grainy but not too bizarre.
The other dish tasted not so bad either...but I couldn't quite place it..it wasn't chicken, not pork, not fish, not guts or eyeballs either.

I asked my hosts..."what is it"
    "Phet"(duck) one guy answers.
They are all starting to laugh too much, and not just from the jungle juice.
    another guy pipes up"Yeah...wild duck""
So I play along and say "Phet leu?"(Canadian translation "Duck eh?")
"And how many legs does this duck have?"I ask.
"FOUR" one guy blurts out laughing....I'm finally starting to guess now
" Mii Haan Mai?"(does it have a tail too)
"Yes"..... they are killing themselves at this point.
"They eat our rice and sometimes we eat them"
Yuum yuum,I am eating bloody rat.....but the good kind I was assured...and for sure this was way out in the boonies...these were not garbage rats.In fact these guys had hunting dogs (sort of) that would sniff out the burrows along the rice field banks and flush the prey!
And as for the first, slightly grainy dish....giant lizard
Double yuum yuum...oh well... maybe another sip of that crazy hooch will wash it all down.
    Chok Dee Kaap
I'm sure everyone who has actually lived in Thailand has eaten some pretty weird stuff!

    Yep, rice rat is tasty

my brother went to a Chinese restaurant in London many years ago and asked the waiter what was good (in those days, Chinese restaurants were a rarity)

The waiter said "dog", which pleased my bro a lot, so he ordered it

trouble was, after eating it he realised the waiter had said "duck" so was a bit disappointed
    I have reported your post

Once, while in Laos,I was sitting in an old wooden house on the outskirts of Vientienne being introduced to how the Lao men drink.
First off, they all laugh at Thai men with their Naam Soda and water, and Naam Keang.
They drink their hooch straight up!!
So here we were sitting around, late dusk, when all of a sudden there is this invasion of flying insects, through the open doors and windows, they are all over the place.flying, landing, crawling.
I can't remember the Thai name for them but they look sort of like crane flies,or giant mosquitoes .
People start scooping them them up where they land.Someone gets a propane tank going with a big Wok on top.
Then they start throwing the critters in,singing off the wings and legs in an instant!
    On to a plate....and bingo ...free"Kaap Kaem"(drinking food).
And just as suddenly as the swarm descended it is gone....
    ...some of it eaten.

^ They're popular is Isaan too- they come out in swarms after it rains.
Apparently, if you gorge on them, they also have a mild narcotic effect.

HHmmm ....? narcotic effect I guess the 9 or 10 that I politely ate don't constitute a gorging.
    Anyone know the name?
They are not the same as those crazy flying ants? who swarm any light, and land close to the light wherever, start snapping off their own wings .And then you see one, presumably female ,being chased by one or more suitors like a weird little train or insect conga line.
