    Visa Run to Chiang Khong?

Hi All - anyone ever done this? I need to find the closest crossing point from Chiang Mai to Laos for a visa run for some Cambodian relatives and according to the map, this seems to be the place. Appreciate any experiences anyone may have.

Greenbus line has buses from CM Arcade terminal to Chiang Khong. Go to Thai Immigration at the river get stamped out, take small boat over river to Huay Xai Laos, get stamped in. I guess Cambodians don't pay. Westerers pay about $30 US. Some hotels/guest houses there if you want to stay overnight. Do reverse to come back. Chiang Khong can be a strict office,eg money, clothes, ticket out.

Easier to go to Mae Sai. Just walk over bridge to Burma.

Thanks mikem, that's really useful information. Unfortunately, Burma is not an option since they'd have to get a visa in advance. Cheers.

I think there may only be 2 buses a day CM to Chiang Khong. You can book in advance. The bus stops at Payao to eat & also Chiang Kham. Don't get off by mistake.

CM guesthouses also run minibuses to Chiang Khong but they arrive late so you have to stay overnight in Chiang Khong. Chiang Khong is a very nice place. Quiet & good views looking over the river to Laos.
