    It's all quite amusing.

We have Germans and Americans trying to play cricket (the Germans even officiate it not surprisingly). One American wants to bomb everyone (just like their Nazi government), one English guy doesn't drink - honestly!. A couple 'teach', some like to ride bikes, many seem to like falling off them recently, one owns a small bar and one is a miserable old Kiwi/Ocker prick.

I wouldnt say they are all foked up around our village, There is maybe 3 out of 20 in a 20klm area that I cant stand but the rest are ok but really dont have much to do with them due to age and interests. A couple are acholics so some times its better stay clear unless I am up for a drink.

Makes one wonder if people who go to the other side of the world to put down roots in the back blocks a developing country are not a little eccentric?
Some probably are a little odd. Some are there after having done the economic math and figure Thailand can give a better quality of life for available financial resources. Some are there because they married a Thai and thats where she wants to be. My guess is that for most farangs up country its a combination of all of the above in various proportions for individuals of course. And I dont mean eccentrics in a bad way either, more of alternative thinkers separated from the mainstream. I very proudly include myself in that category BTW. Just that some non-conformist eccentrics can tend to be a bit nutty when they diverge too much from what is considered normal.

If you are really in the sticks (like me) there is only Ipstar, satellite. It's not cheap at 1800 bht/ month, but it's that or nothing. Unless you're lucky, you might be close enough to a CAT CDMA tower which will give you a decent internet connection for a lot less. In decent sized towns they pretty much all have ADSL now- even our nearest village has it.

I'd be amazed if you can't find something suitable in Ban Saray/ Ban Chang / Sattahip though- theres a fair bit of development happening there (hardly the sticks though). In the 'real' sticks, you would normally have your house built. There are gated estate type developmers in all provincial cities, but in the real sticks property for sale is basically word of mouth- I know of two around here.
I was looking for something nice 300m2 nice furniture private pool etc but could not find something via agents or on the net. One way house in Bang saray looked ok but no Internet... So I live in the hellhole Pattaya and dont do whores. No one believes that

It may seem that way, but the old gits that you find on a daily basis are the same old group that socialize in the same old places, which can also be deceiving towards the Farang-oriented establishments. To the contrary, there aren't that much Farang residents in Surin Province - 80% tend to concentrate within 15kms from Muang. Surin takes up a large geographical space, and it's the smart ones that take to the sticks way out where one might go a year without interaction. Of the handful of Farang-related places, many have gone belly-up {lack of a market} and those remaining struggle daily. Looking for Farang? Go to Buriram.

Yeh, it's a great training ground to be eccentric (or individualist if you prefer) is Isaan.
I suppose the same might apply in any provincial 'backwater'.
There are no Joneses to keep up with, or look down on. Fashion is a new Kubota.
But the rat race here is real- rats racing for their life at the end of paddy season.

Probably right. Lots of foreign dickheads in Isaan.
Yep. More common than not. Surely, not limited to Isaan.

We don't have farang hordes out here as such, but yeh, always seems to be a few in these airconned mall places, more often than not pushing the trolley.

Personally I don't get it- I never go to these places unless I'm looking to buy something for meself (no not food, important stuff like electronic gear). Thats what wives are for. The other thing is that these trolley pushers are usually quite insular- it's not as if they come up and say 'owyagoin', or even give you a wink. It's probably their weekly outing, at a guess. Pub farangs are a lot more affable though- but I don't think they're the same farangs. Like me, those guys send the wife shopping. My wife hates shopping with me anyway, because I'm too impatient. So drop me at the pub.

Panda, I could have not said it better. My main reason is the obvious economic one and deciding not to retire in Mexico like I had planned for years. They have gotten too violent and in the habit of raising the cost of everything way beyond reasonable. The Thai wife and child came later and I have no regrets.
Like your post and I think it pretty much says it all.

Why is that smart? Interaction with other humans is a basic need for most people and I doubt many westerners will be stimulated by a bunch of backward baan nokians.

I have come to quite admire people that keep the ancient arts of gleaning, foraging, and keeping things working with wire & rubber bands actually. Certainly a hardy bunch.

Good reason to invest in a good sized inflatable boat and motor. You can find Tesco's and Big C's with handheld GPS. You may well end up being the only one in the neighborhood not living on drowned rodents.....show them a thing or two about skill sets....

Mebbe so. But at least in Bangkok, there are places fuck wits will never dream of going. Where in Isaan, fuck wits are allowed to mingle with poor folks and well to do folks. In Isaan you cannae escape the fockers. Look at Marmite, mingling with a German cricket wannabe player

Of these 'urban delights' you mention, I wish Ubon had a larger variety of good restaurants. It's got a few, which is certainly a saving grace, but obviously nothing like the choice of Bangkok. Some might surprise you though, such as Sincere French restaurant with it's quite impressive selection of grand Cru's (and it's old fashioned menu, that hasn't changed in over a decade). But in an equation relating to quality of life, are shopping malls and bloody car dealerships even worth mentioning? Certainly not to me, anyhow. I only make it to Bangkok about once a year, which is about right for me, and enjoy some good meals and catching up with a handful of friends. I certainly wouldn't swap it for where I live now (i prefer Ubon city overall), but like any city there are enough distractions to keep you occupied in your spare time. Lets face it, most of the city is a dump- but Thailand is a developing country.

Such as? I have to point out, some of the biggest twats I've encountered in Bk are in those glossy faux upmarket places. Bangkoks lack of any real intellectual life, and the boring smarminess of it's mostly Chinese affluent classes really keeps it off the radar as any sort of world city, and holds the whole country back imo. We all know what the place is well known for internationally, namely cheap sex.
