    Little Italy in the Mountains...

Little Italy, commonly known as 'Palio walking St Khao Yai'

I saw this place being built from the start last year and never thought it would be much.

I only recently walked through it for the first time about a month ago. It is spectacular and has a wonderful feel about it.

The clock tower courtyard has a nice bar in it where you can sit in the courtyard and have a cool ale.

It is filled with a network of small laneways, all lined with shops of all sorts, some very interesting kick knack shops and furnishings as well.

there is a lot of food shops and we have only eaten at 2 of them so far, but seems to be some nice restaurants in there and several coffee shops.

There is a really nice hamburger shop, very tasty and a specialised chip shop, everything from smiley fries, to curly fries, to meat sauce to have with them...very good chips...we ate there yesterday arvo.

A lot of people go here and unfortunately, not many buy stuff. Yesterday for example there were a hundred or more walking around, but not many seem to buy stuff and the shops do not seem so busy. I hope they can all survive as it is and will be a great place to visit and for us to keep going as I love the look and feel of it, especially with the mountains surrounding it and the big trees in the middle of it.

    Well done.

Could maybe film a series for television there. Give all the characters a social security number only. Call it 'The Pensioner'.

might it be cause the prices are outrageous ? Anyway we all know luxury shops are not for making money but just for the rich owners to show off, so no problem if they don't cash a satang.

Upon conducting a little more investigative reserch by going to Pailo-KhaoYai.com where there is a map that provides a general where abouts of the place, and then going to Google Earth, I would estimate the coordinates being at approximately
    14°30’45.05”N; 101°25’56.21”E.

Yes very nice but what's it for? I can see no more sense in it than somebody building a typical Thai village in Southern Italy. If that's what you like then go there but don't try and create a Disneyland, Thailand is full of things like that already and within 5 years most of them are deserted and completely overgrown. You can see how unrealistic they are by the lack of business that the shops do. Give it 3 years and the Thais will have admitted defeat and thrown it open to an open market format, somtam sellers jostling with tarpaulin covered stalls selling Chinese junk and locals selling the odd handful of herbs & stuff they've collected from the roadside.

Now if they would build a little Pattaya there instead, selling what they do in Pattaya I am sure they would make a roaring Business there. Would also keep the Italians from coming over here.

Looks like a very nice place btw. may go and have a look when I am around there.

I dont know how accurate this is but you can extract them from google maps like this.

I went to the Palio Khao Yai site here

    Palio-KhaoYai.com

They have a map with a link to Google maps, went to Google maps and the "link" button, this has the GPS co ords in the link
Unknown road to Route 2090 - Google Maps14.648697,101.399431&sspn=0.043679,0.084028&ie=UTF8&ll=14.666301,101.40707&spn=0.045835,0.077076&z=14
    A bit fiddly but works

Wifey and I had some free time on Sunday so we took a drive up to the Palio Italian Village in Khao Yai. Precise coordinates are 14°32.266’N; 101°23.963’E. I will be publishing a more detailed report later today after downloading some of the pics and preparing the report.
Just a note, at 14°32.830’N; 101°19.613E there is a very picturesque Italian restaurant named Terano Restaurant. And between Palio Italian Village and the Tarano Italian Restaurant, there is a small Italian villa with restaurant, ice cream shop, grape vines and nice gardens that are fantastic for a wedding reception or just plain old photo taking.

This place has become so popular...particulalry prior to Plaio being finished, that the owners were charging for people to take photos....maybe still are.

But it was the first tuscanny tpe of building around here that i know of. Then came the restaurant you mentioned, beautifully built, but never busy....and they had roast lamb on special for a very good price to.

There is also a huge development on the Kirrimaya road that I cannot remember name now. It is built on 3000 rai and has gold course plus tuscanny style shopping/restaurant courtyard and the homes start at $US500k and up to around $US2 million.

I really like the style, but the practicalities are not so great in the hot weather, exposed walls everywhere etc.

We noticed the development in the area since we were last up that way 8 years or so ago. Looking lovely and will be returning that way soon. Lots to see.

0845 hrs Sunday, 2 May 2010: Wifey and I depart Ban Chang Rayong province and head on up toward Khao Yai to the Palio Italian Village. Destination coordinates are 14°32.266’N; 101°23.963’E. The route traveled was Sukumvitt (highway #3) in Ban Chang to 332 and then 331 North to 36 going West to 7 North. From 7 North took the motorway 7 North toward BKK to just past the airport where 9 North was picked up. Took 9 N toward Bang Pa-in where it connected to 1 North toward Saraburi. From Saraburi took 4 East where it turned into 2 East headed toward Muak Lek and Pak Chong. At interchange in Pak Chong, take 2090 South (Thanarat Road) for approximately 18 kilo and the Palio Italian Village will be on the left hand side. The trip there took about 3 ¼ hours. There is plenty of parking. On the weekends, expect a heavy turnout of people. Best photo opportunity in the morning during the week.
The grounds are nice and the shops pleasant to look around in. If there were not so many Thais walking around one would think they were in the middle of some small Tuscany village. Plenty of restaurants with most selling Thai food in an Italian looking villa. We were looking for pizza but in the 4 or 5 restaurants we stopped at there was amazingly no pizza to be had.
It was a great photo opportunity however, my pictures do not compare to Nawty’s in this case and I only have a few pictures worthy of publication in this thread as there were a lot of people out and about this Sunday afternoon. Anyway, you will get the idea of the place form these and other pics posted to this thread. In the immediate surrounding area, there are resorts, golf courses, other restaurants and some other sights to see, including Khao Yai National Park.
When departing Palio Italian Village, we proceeded South on 2090 for a few kilo to the first major intersection where we turned right and headed West back toward Route #2 (Mittraphap Road) toward Muak Lek. That is when we came across the Primo Posto Italian Villa and grounds. It was a small Italian villa with restaurant, ice cream shop, grape vines and nice gardens that are fantastic for a wedding reception or just plain old photo taking. There was a 55 baht per person fee to enter the grounds but I considered it worth it for the photo opportunity. Further on the same road in the valley at coordinates 14°32.830’N; 101°19.613E, there was the Terano Italian Restaurant on the left hand side of the road going toward Muak Lek. Although we did not stop for dinner, we did stop for a cold drink and to take a few pictures. We headed back home to Ban Chang after that cold and refreshing drink to have some pizza that we were so hungry for after visiting the Italian Village in Khao Yai. Safe return back home slightly after dark.

Below is a picture of one of a 2nd floor of a building in the Palio Italian Village.

Below is another picture of a 2nd floor of a building with shutters in the Palio Italian Village.

Below picture is or some of the other good looking scenery noted on the Palio Italian Village grounds

Below picture is in the valley between the Palio Italian Village and the Primo Posto grounds.

Below picture of building on the grounds of Primo Posto.

Below picture is of the Terano Restaurant.

Below picture is of the Terano Restaurant grounds in the valley of the Khao Yai park and mountains that are in the background.

All in all it was a lovely day and would recommend the drive up that way to experience the area. Our next time up we plan on staying over for a day or two as there is plenty to do and see. Ciao from Villa Sea Traveler in Ban Chang.

You know why it looks so good...is cos you do not have to finish it perfectly, the rough and rugged look is great for Thai builders to get right first time.
