Bjorn lady and husband could not commit full time to restaurant as they had to return to home country due to work commitments. At the early stages left relative to manage while they were away , but he was keeping the profits for his own entertainment purposes.... bang

Customers wouldn't care who kept the profits, as long as it was open! The real problem was the food was good, great price, but rarely open, so people stopped going, we know the wife reasonably well, nice lady who then sold the biz to another lady. I think Bjorn family still own the building, great location.

"Customers wouldn't care who kept the profits, as long as it was open!"

Needless to say that goes without saying, but if the "manager " is stealing all the profits the business is going to close eventually.....logical.

    Saranya sold on the lease.

    FEB 9TH 2011 DAILY MAIL

Here's a laugh – a man in Kent has been awarded thousands of pounds in compensation after being “offended” by some stupid Irish joke.

Cllr Ken Bamber, who sits on Medway Council in Kent, was chatting with Brian Kelly, a Unison rep, when he made the joke.

He told Mr Kelly: “A man walked into a Dublin bar and saw a friend sitting with an empty glass. 'Paddy can I buy you another', he asked, to which Paddy replied – 'now what would I be wanting with another empty glass""

Mr Kelly, who was born in Ireland, said Cllr Barber had used the word “Paddy” offensively and was being “racist with intent”.

He lodged an official complaint and took the matter to an employment tribunal, which referred the case to the conciliation service Acas.

As my colleague Douglas Murray has said: "In a sane society this joke would lead to laughter or forgetfulness. But Kelly is apparently 'proud of [his] Irish heritage' and deems the joke to be 'racist'."

The most telling thing about this case is that the man telling the joke was in his late 70s, and that’s because no one tells Irish jokes anymore because they are outdated and stale.

And that’s nothing to do with the existence of the professionally offended brigade, among them the various “Irish” community groups founded in the 1980s, all of them ready to claim “racism” with hair-trigger quickness. Like all such self-appointed groups, they screamed loudest when such comedy got closest to the truth – in the case of Irish immigrants their fondness for alcohol.

Jokes about thick Paddy and drunken Micks died out because in the early 1990s, Ireland became very rich. By the end of that decade the Republic, once a economic backwater, had higher average earnings than the UK, for the first time in history. Irish immigrants to England, once characterized as country thickos who were good only for building roads and fighting, were by the turn of the century,as a nation, highly educated and earning more than the natives (and certainly more than people in the Medway, the part of England that gave us the word "chav"). People don’t stop telling jokes because they’re “offensive” – probably the opposite – but because they stop reflecting a certain truth. Anyone who makes Irish jokes now just looks old or stale, which in comedy terms is worse than being racist and the younger generation don't find them in the least bit funny.

Steak House is doing a good trade but word of warning, arrive no later than 6.30 or you won't get a table. People tend to stay all night.

Two new bars, one beside last kick or whatever it's soccer name is opp Porn's is well done it and nice, however beside porns, the large bar that never seemed to have a lot of business has set up the covered area as a bar, "Gin Lao" 30 ipad's and tablets at once seen the other night so "Yuppy Bar" is it's alternative name.

Seems very popular but playing live music right beside Porns live music is maddness. Mind you Porn is just getting too expensive.

End of the street another change of owner, no longer a bar but a buffett experience.

Really interesting in on the way to that place is a bright blue very large 7/11 type shop with good range of products.

Well the two new bars "Yuppie Bar" or Gin Lao is doing a brisk trade, even though they play music back to back with Porn's. Beer is cheaper though.

Opposite the cute retro style bar is really well thought out, but not ding as well.

Dinner at the Steak House was good, not Macro beef but local but still a good cut. 60 baht a tallie is cheap!

For those interested....here is an update on government infrastructure improvements .... for Sawang Daen Din up to the 28th April........
Following on from the "undergrounding" of large storm water drains on either side of highway 22, the hard surface sealing of the slip roads on the Eastern side of Sawang Daen Din, has commenced with well Engineered levelling and preparation. The Government instrumentalities involved should be complimented on a difficult and well done project.
A substantial machine mixed cement/base clay base was applied, with rolling, beneath a substantial amount of "blue metal" ...great to see a good job being done for the long term! Both sides of the highway have all new drainage and cement gutters, with some shops left high and dry 2 metres above the footpath!
These new "slip roads" are quite wide, and will greatly improve safety particularly in front of the large Sawang Daen Din School, and allow much safer access and parking for shops and schools.

The new large undercover Market/Bus Terminal (200 metres North of highway 22, opposite the hospital) is also progressing well with the roof going on.This should greatly improve traffic congestion and safety on the highway 22 intersection, once the market (the busiest place in town!)moves North, off the highway intersection. There is also a very large construction getting it's roof on on highway 22 South side, approximately opposite Bjorn's Steak Bar, but unable to confirm what it will house. We went to the Steak House on Saturday night and had good live music, offering a buffet type fixed price menu, but with well presented and priced "a la carte" available when pressed, and it was busy.
On the downside...the restaurant one street South of the Highway near the Wat, previously run by "Eddy" and frequented by the English teachers with good western food and drinks, has now reverted back to an Isaan Thai restaurant since Eddy's departure about a month ago, with no English speaking staff and no English menu...and very few customers l

There were tens of thousands of visitors, and a big street parade with lots of floats... during a three day festival from 22-25th April celebrating 150 years of the Sawang Daen Din hospital. There were visits and speeches from Senior politicians and some popular music performances, although a 3 hour spectacular thunderstorm that put power out to most of the city for an hour or so heralded a start to the wet season on the last night, and blew over lots of tents and caused serious problems for market vendors.

The annual near bye rocket festival on the 24th April was great fun with a few hundred locals all having a bet on whether the 20 or so rockets launched would make it into the stratosphere! It was very hot 38.7 according to my watch...but having a beer under the trees and having a wager or two was great fun, and it certainly is a very technical and spectacular event. This is a really popular sport with strict rocket design rules and categories. You can bet on the rockets blowing up...... by exploding on light-up, losing their tail, or being a "fizzer" and win, or you can bet that they will exceed their class designed "time to climb" (almost out of the atmosphere and well out of sight for up to 6 minutes!)
Next time I fly North from Bangkok, I will make sure it's in the early morning or at night.... not between 3pm and 5pm in the afternoon!

Third time lucky...with a real computer not adams mistake!.....but still cant get the sizing correct!

The village Rocket Festival circuit is actually very complex...with lots of "know how" and is equivalent to say horse racing, and a good country race meeting! When you go to one look a bit deeper!

....It has been a piece of history in rural Thailand for hundreds of years...... Originally it was a ceremony held at the end of the dry season, believed to help bring on heavy rain for crop planting, and to "puncture" those clouds overhead!

It is much more complex than the average farang visitor sees on his rubber neck visit!

Many of these rockets get to amazing altitudes into the outer atmosphere, and it is not unusual for them to be still climbing at over 6 minutes from launch! There are always local bookmakers, quite often older village women, who will take your wager, and pay out immediately the wager is completed.
Generally you will bet a few baht, maybe 200 or so as a typical bet, and bet on each rocket just before it's launch....
You usually bet against the rocket meeting or exceeding its designed "standard time to climb" or you can bet against it!
This means that if it is a "put up job", blows up on launch, spirals out of control, burns off its tail, or is a "fizzer" you can get your payout any time after it fails, provided it does not climb for the designated time.
Usually the wagers are on odds of 1:1 basis so very fair if the rockets are Temple rockets!
Most of the rockets are built to strictly enforced standards, and your typical 1 metre long blue plastic water pipe and bamboo rocket, is normally a 200 or 300 seconds climb model. They are judged from the moment the bamboo with red and green flags held by the launch manager is turned as the rocket first ignites until the stewards commitee (usually about 50 metres away, and equiped with fancy telescopes, binoculars, and even RADAR!) decides the rocket has reached peak altitude and is starting to descend. At this point it is announced on the PA and bets are paid! It is not unusual for several rockets to be simultaneously on climb!
The general betting is usually between 100 baht and 20,000 baht ($600 US),
.........however back in the temple grounds carpark under the trees........ with the engines running and watching from inside the new Airconditioned BMW 4WD's and Mercs, betting of serious money is not unusual. Bets of millions of baht are made (even in little village events!)with bets of 10million baht ($300,000 US)not unusual in the new affluent Thailand!

These events are part of a very competitive circuit... followed from village to village by the serious rocket builders, and the serious gamblers! Building and launching a "winning" rocket is very prestigious, equivalent to owning and preparing a winning race horse!

The usually "annual" Rocket Festival in a rural village is just like a country "race meeting"...... An opportunity for a typical farming family to attend a very sociable event,...... socialise, gamble, party, and add some real excitement to a pretty "hum drum" life without spending a fortune.
At this time of the year, farmers are between harvest and planting season,....have time on their hands,.... maybe some cash from rice sales, and it is too hot to do much else (typically mid 35-40 deg C

The reason they are held "out in the sticks" is that everyone realises they have an element of danger.....(attraction no 1) and there is less likelyhood of damaging people or houses...

.....Eating...everyone realises there will be lots of food and drinking, stalls and hurdy-gurdies (attraction no 2)

.... Social...most of their friends will be there (attraction no 3)

.....Gambling...If you can pick the winners ...you can make some serious money gambling (attraction no 4)
......Competition .....Building and competing your rocket is normally a team event ....with a number of people involved as a team with each rocket.....Although "not supposed to" the most successful rockets are often built and pepared by the monks from the local Wat...although they operate in the background with lots of experience and knowledge...letting the local temple supporters actually fire the rocket! They add a great deal of interest as people generally regard the monks to be honest, and have a "really good" rocket! The private entries are often pretty "suss" with huge gambling going on and shonky rockets....designed to be "fizzers" are not unusual... just like the horse racing industry, where the odd donky is slipped in!

.....The kids have a great time and it is a real family event!

The "Top Secret" reaming tools.......used to fine tune the rocket propellant (previously compressed) inside the plastic water pipe! The whole inside of the rocket is a series of hand reamed, specially shaped sections, and profiled combustion gas venting hole down the middle!

One of the Rocket Specialists known as "Big Dick" doing his final "reaming" He cost me ..........lost about 300 baht when this rocket started doing uncontrolled "vertical barrell rolls" at about 5,000ft! .....and failed to make full time to climb! But I won it back on the "Temple Special" so wonder if it was a carefully "put up" job!
