Bjorn Steakhouse, small falang restaurant open on the main st.....heading towards Phung Khon east out of town, pass 2nd pedestrian bridge, and exactly at bus stop on left.....yellow illuminated sign "BJORN STEAKHOUSE".

Another nice bar open, around near UD niteclub, very close to Temple at the end of street, name of "YESTERDAY BAR"........only open in evening, and run by very nice Thai husband and wife who speak good english (teachers)

    Big improvements at Chamdao Resort

Road in front of TESCO at present stage of upgrade to 4 lanes, badly needed.

That must have been the Restaurant Baansuan Swetkamol, with the Chuanthanapanya Resort, I suppose.
I spent there one or two nights last February.

The resort is a small world made in wood surrounded from trees and bushes.

We probably were in the same little hut, but unfortunately

in my hut there was not such a charming young Thaigirl with a T-shirt from Western Union.

The park is very beautiful and well-fit.
I saw at least three constant gardeners working all day.

I also took a little paradise in wood for about 600 baht for one night.

As there are windows on three sides of the house I felt nature very close to me in the night.

In Switzerland we call these little houses made of wood „Chalet“

The bed was OK and not too hard.

I had to get used to the windows from three sides of the bed.
It is good there were at least curtains.

The bathroom was a bit used, but all in all not bad.

    Sawan daen Din

A short walk throug the tiny houses brought me to the Restaurant Baansuan Swetkamol

The food is good, the waitresses are nice, but they don’t speak English and they didn’t communicate really with me.

There were no bargirls at all around, so I spent my evening with a beer and a good thriller from John le Carré.

    That is OK, too.

Roger, if your great great grandfather came out to Australia in 1850, he probably did it for two reasons.
Firstly to escape the Great Irish Potato Famine (1845 - 1852), lot of emmigration from Ireland during that period, (most went to New York)
and secondly, 1850 was when the goldrush occurred in Australia, lot of immigration to Aust. then.

I am just a few more klicks down the road...Phang Kon...well 20 klicks north on the 222 but that's details....

Thanks for letting others know about the road works and construction around SDD....have a few (Thai) friends in the villager that go to market there....and they don't get to know everything that is going on...Pass through often on my way to Udon...usually stop at the Petrol Station just after Tesco Lotus...used to have a nice coffee shop but it has been demolished now to make way for newer and better things....

Will be there from 9th Dec for 5 weeks if anyone is interested ....I have no internet access in the village (I used to have a satellite up/down link...but only worthwhile if I am there over a year )...SDD does not have the same problem...but not sure what access speed is....

English is pretty rarely spoken....local lingo is Laos but all taught Thai at school (if they went)...."sep elee" rather than aroy mak mak..will bring a smile to their faces if you enjoyed your meal..."sep sep nuah nuah"...means it was really tasty....

    Have fun any way...

When i first visited the area 8 years ago Phon Khun had the only hotel for miles around, so stayed there fairly regularly. Hotel is still there, but two shitty bars that were on the main st are now knocked.....myself and few other falangs had some great nights in those bars or great craic as we would say back home.
No shortage of hotel/resorts in the area now.

Folks, I will be in SDD this October. Can someone please give me directions to the falang bar and any other interesting spots (assuming they are still in operation). I know where Tesco is, so that would be a good starting point. Appreciate any info
    Cheers

Hi threestags,..... most of the bars in SDD are located on a street which is south and runs parallel to the main st through the town....coming from Tesco direction take a right at the Bangkok Bank and i think the second left at the 7 eleven. Not there since last January, but had emails from 2 expats living in SDD that both were opening bars.....one from John Hawker (aussie) July last that he has opened a bar/restaurant and pizza home delivery.....also see John here on YouTube ......another guy Simon Constantine (Brit) emailed me that he was opening bar with full english breakfast. Both guys should be easy to find.
There is also an excuse for a nite club down the same street Pay a visit to Tesco any Friday afternoon where a number of ex-pats congregate for a beer (at the food section) Both resorts, previously posted, above are great for food/wine/beer....Chamdao most nights has a live band if you like Thai rock A number of ex-pats living in development to the rear of Tesco.
Anyway UDON is a 40 min drive away. Cheers BTW ...for those not familIar with SDD, its located on Route 22 ,halfway between Sakhon Nahkon city and Udon city, pop 20,000.
