Phon Phisai just east of Nong Khai

A Thai friend is staying with her parents in their Phon Phisai house. She is going to make reservations for me at a Phon Phisai "resort". It's called Baan Waat or some such spelling. She says it's very nice, western, and about 800 baht per night.

Does anyone know much about Phon Phisai or Bann Waat Resort?

Also, are there other fairly decent accommodations in or around Phon Phisai?

Phon Phisai is a small town and has little accomodation.
Used to have a farang resort there called Big Snake Guesthouse but that closed down a couple of years back.
Could be your Bann Waat Resort is the same place re-opened

I guess that includes the family stand and deliver pot to,,,, yes I have same probs mate near to you in Ban Pak ,, but we allways stay the night in air cooled resort with sit and deliver job in the morning just outside ban dung 350 baht per night ,very clean and friendly ,,,,, LLaLaweeeeediiiii resort or some such spelling , ( I probably missed out 9 e,s ) but you get the general picture

We are going up to Phon Phisai this coming Sunday and will be there about 5 days. I will write a review of the area, accomodations, etc., and attach some photos when I return to Nonthaburi.

OK. Spent 5 days in the Phon Phisai area with my wife (Thai born but American Citizen) and son (American born). Flew up to Udon Thani and back via Nok Air. Good flights. Good airline. Udon Thani airport is a nice modern one. Nicer than most airports in the US. Nong Khai seems to be a peaceful city, although we only spent a few hours there. Took the Friendship Bridge to Laos for obtaining return visas to Thailand. Stayed 1 night in Vientiane. The visa run through the Thai and Laos immigrations, on both sides of the bridge, including the processing for 60 day tourist visas in the Thai Consulate in Vientiane, were pure torture. Don't do it if you are not ready for punishment. If possible, get a 60 or 90 day toursit visa in your home country before coming to Thailand. Spent half a day processing through going and half a day processing through coming back. A total joke except none of us were laughing.

Vientiane is a beautiful city. I would like to retire there it's so nice. Looks nothing like Thai cities, IMO. Much more modern and more western looking. Possibly the French influence. Stayed at a very nice and super clean hotel located right on the main avenue of Lanexang Road. The hotel was called Sengphachan and had all of the ammenities of any modern hotel. 600 baht a night including a buffet breakfast. Good service and nice people.

In Phon Phisai we stayed at the BanWas Resort located just off Route 212. Modern and clean 1 bedroom bungalows including some studio apartments. Fully equipped and fully up to western standards. 600 baht per night. The owner and her daughter made us feel welcome. I don't think they ever stop cleaning. BanWas can be reached at 089-5707782 or 081-7089424. Try them out. You will love the place. By the way, they overlook the Mekong river.

I haven't been to Phon Phisai in about 7 years. At that time, it seemed pretty rural and quaint. This town is known for the Bang Fai Phayaa Naak (บั้งไฟพญานาค), or Naga Fireball Festival, although it is also celebrated in other nearby areas along the Mekong River.

There is also a park with enormous statues of Buddha and various Hindu deities. I can't recall the name of it, but I did some searching and I think it is Saalaa Kaew Kuu (ศาลาแก้วกู่).

Just have to upload the photos there and copy the URL into the area of the message. Will try my best to get this done today as I do have some nice photos of the area.

Shit I used to do the Vientaine run every 3 months and thought it was straight foreward,, damn you must not be used to the way Thai do us on visas and extensions, and they have made it worse again this year,, so I maybe just take your advise and move to Laos,,Thanks.

Don't know tho, my wife works here and would have to drive over to se me once in awhile, but I was up in Chiang Mai awhile back and she came to visit and didn't approve of my 26 year old Burmese housekeeper and she shit a brick the next trip cause she had fired that one and I hired a 24 year old next, so now I have to live in Phetchabun so she can watch me and she my housekeeper..

Hey Floridathunderstorm, gotta thank you for the hotel tip. We stayed at Ban Was for 3 nights and it was perfect for us. Far enough from the in-laws but close enough to town! Spotlessly clean and the essential western loo.

They were full every night we were there and it was mid-week. Some farangs, some Thai. Their deck overlooking the river is great. Twould be the perfect place to watch the naga fireballs with a few beers, but they are already booked out for this year's event.

Glad I could be of assistance. Yes, Ban Was is a western style resort with all of the comforts of home, so to speak, except the price. They also own a motel, right across the street, with hotel rooms that meet the same standards. Really nice people run the place and keep it to exacting standards. I love Phon Pisai. Peaceful and the real Thailand. My wife, who is the lady in the black and white dress in the last picture standing next to the owner, and I got invited to a public school where we met the Head Master and various Teachers. They gave us a tour of the school and we talked with the teachers for a few hours. Wonderful people. So interesting. After spending two months at our house in Nonthaburi (my wife's sisters maintain the house when we're not there) we headed back to the US. Hopefully my wife will be back for a visit early next year.

Florida, we have just had yet another great few days being looked after by the folk at Ban Was. We have now stayed there 4 or 5 times and every time the place is close to being fully booked, right now they have a German/Thai family in town for 2 months that have booked out one of the houses, they are actually building a 5th little house on the land now as there is such great demand.

The other big news in town is that there is a Tesco being built in Phon Phisai on the right hand side of the main road as you drive through town. No more treks to Nong Khai for groceries! This, combined with the farang-run bar/restaurant near the bus station will make me a bit more comfortable when we are up there for long holiday stints and I am craving some farang stuff.

Hello, do you like Phon Phisai ? I did. Stayed at the Boonthaweehotel a few days
in december 2009 and by arrival I was invited at the marriage celebration of the
owners daughter..felt quiete str.ange for an elderly backpacker travelling alone.
Had a decent room on the roof top , clean A/c shower internet in the lobby and
used a push-bike lend by a staff member. Further on along the Mekong I saw another place nearly along the Mekong I saw another place, view on the river,
same price but since the owners of the Buntawee hotel had been so nice I stayed there.
