Nice to see that you're settling in. Best to you and Midget toward your new surroundings and endeavours....

    Wise words. And it works.

This is how I've managed to make it so long in Saigon, and be happy.

    the only way to survive.
    good advice.
actually, i kinda admire those who can continue to believe their own bullshit- those who ignore all the shit around them and walk around waiing the locals , eating the putrid food and somehow believing they "fit in" in spite of all evidence to the contrary.
these are the dummies who have managed to adopt (or were they infected by?) the issaan way of life: ignoring the obvious and walking around with the grin of ignorance on their faces, happilly accepting being fucked over by their thai extended families who "love them toooo mutt!
Of course, we all know that LoS is the only place on this planet where you'll find two-faced individuals who'll try to use you for what they can get. Yeah, right!!

Milky, a perrsonal inquiry. How did you find yourself in Saigon? Employment related connection? Have a local family there?

no, it's not the only place.

it is all about percentages,mate.......... and los gets one of the top scores in the global: "we will lie and cheat and steal and smile sweetly as we take advantage of your gullibility and the weakness of your human compassion to screw you out of your last cent" stakes.

Most Farang in Issaen live there. Its not a holiday or working area. And this is where most of the Bangkok and Pattaya girls come from so you catch them before they start 'work' in the south.

perhaps, but mostly the ones left in the village would all be dogs, or under 12
years old, if you were to try catch them before they started "working"

i once went to a wedding in an issaan village and there was NOT ONE woman there who was between the age of around 15 and 30, except for the bride, who i would have put at around 15.

i asked why, and was told that all the women were "working" in pattaya.

ended up in the same village a few months later
over sonkraan , and the place was over-run with attractive young females, back visiting their families for the week
i love isaan, but the place is really just a factory which turns out drunks and whores.
(apologies to the very few thai inhabitants of isaan who did not go through the factory gates: i know a few and they are first class people, but they are few and far between)

Your part of Isaan seems quite different to where I'm staying now Tsi.
Numbers wise, many more people from around here are working in drab industrial estates in Bangkok or the Eastern seaboard than are in the bar trade.
And a wedding where the only young lass present was the bride? Wow.

After all of seven weeks living here in Ubon it's maybe premature to comment, but my impression of Isaan life is basically very pleasant. Regular visits to Ubon city or the fleshpots down south are a welcome variety to the pleasant sameness of life here though.

    I could easily live here.

I am not sure that "tsicar"really knows Issan or it's people very well by his comment.

lived in isaan, about halfway between korat and buriram for 4 years, speak thai (with an isaan accent, i am told), reasonably well.
nearest traffic light to where i stayed was around 40 km away, and i would have to travel around 100 km to be able to buy anything that remotely resembles farang food.
did not see a farang face for the first two years i lived there, and had to interact with the thais on their level.
so perhaps sabang is right: i lived in a different part of isaan to where he does.
i should think ubon is kinda like the "big city" in comparison.

ok, so i know "my part" of isaan and its people extremely well, thank you, blue eyes.

isaan is not for everybody, but it does kind of grow on you, and yes, it can be very pleasant, and it SURE IS very different from what i call the "tourist thailand."
stay long enough and you start to get a real insight into the life of the rural thai person, why they are the way they are and live the way they do, and do the things they do, but you will NEVER get to understand any of it!

I agree, isaan is not a place for everyone. Its vary laid back and is a great place to get away from all the tourist, hustling, and hype. I've been to isaan for 2 months and noticed that each province is different when it comes down to fun. I enjoyed Khon kean and mahasarakham alot. These 2 provinces have alot of of students and some night life, nice resturants, and a few malls. But its definitely recommended to make friends who live in isaan so its easier to get around or just go with people who know the place. Also, most people in isaan don't speak english but seem to be less uppity and smile more than people from places likie Bkk,Phuket, and Pattaya, and everything is cheaper too so your money can go even further. I would recommend staying in a apartment complex, the rooms are vary nice just like any holtel and are dirt cheap. Usually alot of students live in these complexe's so dont be suprised if you smell pot(mari-jane). It can also be alot of fun hanging out with these students, normally they study most of the time but if you happen to find someone who speaks english feel free to start a conversation with one and see if they would like to go out to a disco. If you happend to be in khon kean by the way, may I suggest hanging out around the Sofitel, all around this big holtel has resturants and bars to hang out with some buddies to have a few drinks. Behind the Sofitel there are some really nice resturants and one really good italian resturant, and a few blocks away is Rad Society, thats a really fun place to be.
Also across the street from the sofitel is a motor bike rental, should be about the same price as phuket like 200 baht aday.

    Take care and have fun

My girlfriend and her family comes from a town in issan called Si sa ket, I spend a lot time there for the last 4 years i have spend my holiday there. But i can not imagine that someone who spended a lot of time in pattaya or bangkok can get happy in Issan. It is complitely different way of living. The only thing you can do when you live there is farming and getting drunk. I understand why people try to find luck elsewhere. But in the end you come back to nothing. Issan has its charm, but i think that everyone needs to change enviorment now and then. No one get stuck in issan everyone seems to come and go.

It all depends, rono. Sisaket is definetly at one end of the spectrum, whilst places like Udon Thani and Korat are at the other...In the latter two places it would be very easy to adapt from life in the more touristy locations..they cater for your needs but don't shove it in your face. Ideal..

Well, I've driven around the ring road. But I believe there are a couple of farang hangouts in Sisa now Peter- which prolly makes it the height of sophistication compared to a few years ago.

Sisaket hasn't changed much at all. This can only be a greater advantage.

That reflects more the personality of the person doing such a boring thing.

I went to Savankhet(Laos) this new year. Its a small sleepy town but when the new year came the prostitute also came back home. In Laos the women fashion is more shy then Thailand, so its easier to see the differene.

I was qite chocked to see how many prostitute there was coming back home the bus over the border was filled.
