Mendip, a great combo. I am sure gradmaMenip will love seeing her. What a great chance for mini to know her, make sure they spend a day without you, women bond and get yer to ask your mum about you and her. You can fook off up the pup while she learns about you and pastry making from the master.

Mendy, I could be massively wrong and I will probably look into this after I have posted this but, I am pretty sure the plague still exists 5555

    Yes fuck, it actually does.

'In June 2018, a child was confirmed to be the first person in Idaho to be infected by bubonic plague in nearly 30 years. A couple died in May 2019, in Mongolia, while hunting marmots. Another two people in the province of Inner Mongolia, China were treated in November 2019 for the disease.'

It's a legitimate job Joe, why not consider it? I'll do the cooking.

    Pegboy

A pegboy was a young man kept on pirate ships by pirates. This young man was forced to sit on a large wooden peg all the time. Anyway, this was done so that whenever a pirate wanted to drop his anchor (so to speak) he'd have no problem.

"Come here pegboy, I want some of those sweet cheeks."

Shit, the last thing I need right now is bubonic plague. I wonder what the travel restrictions would be like then?

But don't worry BC, apart from being dead the rat looked healthy enough... although the wife did decline my offer of popping it in the food dehydrator to make rat biltong. It's rare she turns down a food opportunity like that.

I believe it was the fleas on the rats that spread the plague?

As Malmo Mike pointed out some time ago, our rat problem may be due to the dogs killing our snakes? I found this on my morning walk around the garden today...

It really disappoints me that the dogs kill our snakes but there is little I can do, especially at night. If they corner a snake during the day I can usually rescue it if I arrive on time but most activity seems to occur at night.

Yogi and Maya seem to be the worst culprits. I think this one was a chequered keelback.

Today the dogs have also been going mental around the chicken run... I have a feeling we haven't heard the last of the rats.

You will have the time of your life. 15 years ago I did a tour of California with my twins for 24 days sans wife. But its not easy at times. Combing hair after a shower tended to be a challenge occasionally. One thing to keep in mind is your daughter is half Thai and as much as she loves your cooking she will crave rice once in a while. A journey that may well be just once in your life.

^ Yeah AO, I am really looking forward to it... but she has curly hair as well so that will definitely be a problem!

As MM says, I'll also leave Granddaughter and Grandmother to have time alone together. Due to Covid, by July it'll be two and a half years since they last spent time together and mum's now 86 so this needs rectifying.

^ Lyme Regis in west Dorset is already on the list. I'll be reliving some childhood memories as we used to stay in a caravan for a week every summer in Lyme Regis when I was a kid. And besides, there's some great fossils to be found.

I'm thinking of Cornwall as well, with maybe a visit to Tintagel. If we arrive early July we'll get at least two weeks before the English schools break up as after that, travel through Devon and Cornwall is a nightmare.

The Donkey Sanctuary, on the east side of Sidmouth might be worth a visit, being not far from Lyme Regis. I used to live between Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth.

100% correct in your assessment. Fleas are one of those things God should just dis-evolve, if that is even a word.

    This is an evening delight.

    A day in the life...-minack-theatre-3-915px-jpg

The Minack Theatre (Cornish: Gwaryjy Minack) is an open-air theatre, constructed above a gully with a rocky granite outcrop jutting into the sea. The theatre is at Porthcurno, 4 miles (6.4 km) from Land's End in Cornwall, England.

As much as I enjoy the occasional trip to Bangkok I couldn't live there... I'd miss being able to just jump in the car and go somewhere, but also I'd miss my projects and the opportunity to rehabilitate street dogs.

Today it finally stopped raining so I took my latest project a 'step' closer to completion!

I wanted a straight edge to lay the plastic step edging along at the top of the step.

And then once I'd shifted Maya out of the way I built up the top step.

Not a bad job even if I do say so myself. Even Anna got down off her chair to admire my handy work.

More rain is forecast for the remainder of the week so this project may not get finished until I get back from work, next month.

^ An Englishman's home is his castle, and all that... (well, his wife's castle, to be exact).

I think sometimes I give the illusion that my life in Isaan is idyllic with never-ending enjoyment and domestic bliss. Well, it ain't all beer and skittles and some days things don't go as desired.

Yesterday it was looking as though I would return to work next week with a clean sheet with all current projects completed.

This morning I started the next stage of the step project. This was to render around the new step to straighten things up and install the plastic edging, prior to adding the pea-gravel finish tomorrow.

The b@stard render just would not adhere to the concrete. Despite shouting a tirade of profanities the render kept detaching from the sides of the step and slumping down. Eventually I threw several shovel fulls of render over the wall and washed the rest away. Life is just too short sometimes. I wish I'd made the shuttering a bit stronger now.

The 'finished' step will now look like this until I regain some motivation to try again... which probably won't be until the end of the year. But bollocks to it, it looks OK to me.

I later took some windfall mangoes to the chickens and couldn't help noticing this...

Yeah... she's back. This is the first sighting in over a week. The dogs obviously killed a different rat.

I retrieved the rat trap from the workshop and re-baited it with some rock-hard lumps of fried pork I found in the wife's area of the fridge. I don't hold out much hope though... this rat is clever.

It's now looking like I'll return to work with a half finished step and an ongoing rat problem.

You need to key the old concrete and wet it down thoroughly

    ^ Thanks mate.

I didn't bother keying the concrete further but I did wet it down... but that made the mortar too sloppy. To be honest I find that sometimes rendering sticks and sometimes it just doesn't. I have a lot on my mind with a new job coming up and had a bit of a meltdown today and just lost it. I hate that feeling of running out of time to get the shit done. I also lost my favourite trowel which I threw over the wall in frustration.

Sometimes I wonder why I put myself through this shit... we used to use a Grandfather/Grandmother team who did the rendering on my snake house for 500 Baht a day (I supplied materials).

Maybe I should ask the wife if she still has their phone number?

And the bloody rat is still there tonight, mocking me.

^ been there, perhaps leave it to the gardener to finish/organise inc pea shingle.

I had moment today with some overgrown cho om and the thorns , fooking hate the things and i confess to a moment of expletives. This came about as i found the chainsaw had been lent out, the thing was fooked.

I took it to the shop and asked them to service it and change the chain as it was burned, stretched and at the end.

Picked it up, and they'd changed the barrel and piston, ok, not the chain as it was ' ok".

Got it home and the thing would not cut cheese.

Back to the shop and remonstrated with somchai who in formed me i wasn't using it right. I know the owner of said establishment so i tossed the chainsaw at him on the desk and walked off to find him.

He's a first gen chinky Thai and i've known him 16 years and seen his business grow. He's come to our house warming etc.0p

His office is a mezzanine in his latest place and up i stalked. He speaks great English, i politely knocked and got a smile, i apologised for barging in and explained the issue. Off we went and he stood there whilst the bloked changed the chain on the spot, he the refunded my first bill and did'nt charge for the chain.

I still fooking hate cha om.

If you are Uri Geller you can marshal a team of volunteers, although it might take a while to get the result:

A single rat has been removed from a Scottish island owned by "psychic" Uri Geller which has now been declared free from invasive predators.

Volunteers spent two years finding the "elusive rat" on Lamb Island off the East Lothian coast near North Berwick.
