I've had chicken feet in several different countries and I'm not impressed with any interpretation.

"Bring another big beer and slide that plate of fried grasshoppers over, will ya.
    *crunch crunch gulp ahh*
More chicken feet? Nah, you go on. Have at 'em."

Ya know. I am pretty open when it comes to eating most things. I have eaten a few species of snake, alligator, wild boar, horse, ostrich, squirrel etc. However I draw the line on creatures you can find in sewers. Cockroaches, rats, whatever. Also eating any foot on any animal is out because they walk in their own shit.

Would I eat snake here like Cobra, sure. Bugs No. Never ate them in the states, not going to start now.

I posted a pic of a black bug in the 'What's in your garden?' thread which started some discussion about Carpenter Bees... and I was caught out in my lie... the bee wasn't in my garden, I saw it on the dog walk a couple of hundred metres from our house. I thought I'd post a quick pic since it looked so nice and thought no more about it at the time.

I was walking the dogs and had stopped over to take a look at the area Spirit House... I think this one covers all the land in our area which has been subdivided and where we bought a few plots and built our house. I seem to remember many years ago, the morning of our house warming ceremony, we left the usual offerings of a pig's head, a boiled chicken, some oranges, a couple of cigarettes and a glass of Lao Khao at this spirit house at around 5am. This was back when I still had some spiritual feelings which have subsequently been beaten out of me by life events.

The spirit house doubles up as a litter dumping area... a familiar story anywhere in Isaan and I guess the whole of Thailand.

I believe the spirit houses are animalist and not Buddhist but it all seems to get intertwined. Bizarrely this one has a fake machete and AK47 inside, which I can't really understand.

Anyway, this was a couple of days ago and while looking at the house surrounded by plastic litter I noticed several of these black bugs humming around me, which I now know to be Carpenter Bees (thanks S Landreth!).

After the discussion about how harmful these beautiful bees are, and after seeing Shutree's picture of his hole, I decided to go back and investigate today.

There was an obviously dead tree in the small copse surrounding the spirit house, and it also had a kind of parasitic live tree growing up it's side.

The litter in Thailand really does depress me... presumably this is some kind of spiritual place but they just can't help themselves. I used to take a black bin bag on my dog walks and pick up litter on my way, but within a couple of hundred metres the bag would be full and I'd have to lug it around for the next kilometre or so. I had to stop so often to pick up pieces of plastic crap it ruined the walks and I gave up in the end.

And look again at the bottom of the tree... a pile of sawdust.

And from the other side. The tree has a sign on it... Nev?

And on closer inspection... the tree is riddled with holes. This wood was not rotten at all... it was dry and very hard. I have no idea what kind of tree it is/was, but it certainly wasn't soft wood.

There were holes bored throughout the tree... these bees must have some gnashers on them.

It was raining today, maybe why no Carpenter Bees were buzzing around or I probably wouldn't have got this close. I was trying to get a good pic with the flash down the holes.

But take a look in the hole at the top right with the fresh sawdust... you can see a bee's legs and feelers sticking out. No way would I stick a finger down that hole.

Generally a losing battle, and it is such a shame. I remember a few years ago totally losing it when my missus threw out a plastic bottle - in our f*cking front garden.

...or reject the cultural character that introduced these nasty manners to begin with.

    Blind contradiction.

I was just enjoying my evening Leo when I decided to sneak a Ya Dong from the gardener's fridge.

As anyone who lives in Thailand knows... this is an absolutely terrifying sight.

I'm not talking about the shocking state of the gardener's fridge... which isn't his fault to be fair as we use it to store the dog food and eggs... but there's a couple of fresh Jasmine garlands in there... meaning the wife has sent him out to purchase such items. He certainly wouldn't spend his 'hard' earned on such frivolities.

Now all I can think of is, 'what the fukk have I forgotten?'.

It's not our wedding anniversary, I'm sure that was early April. The wife's birthday is September so it can't be that. I'm sure that her mother died around last February... so there's no anniversary there. Or maybe there is... when did her mum die? The 100 day ceremony... is there a second one the second year?

All of a sudden my relaxing evening Leo time has gone...what the fukk could it be?

^May just be for the Thai new year, my other half went off on a praying spree this morning.

Or, you might have forgotten something and should be concerned. That trip to Bangkok might be on yet

The sign is saying there is a shrine there (the one with the machete and immitation gun).

I think this is what it says: ศาลปู่ในปู่ยิ้มปู่ล้อม

The first word says shrine: ศาล

It has the word for paternal grandfather 3 times with 3 other words. I'm not sure if the shrine is to 3 old men ปู่ใน, ปู่ยิ้ม, and ปู่ล้อม, or if it means something else.

Inside the shrine is some more text on a red background. That also mentions ปู่ล้อม on the LHS and also seems to mention some females on the RHS.

So don't mess with the shrine or you might have some extended family after you.

Well, last night I had a bit of a look at it and I thought it said ศาลปูในปูยิ้มปูล้อม. Which left me a bit confused as to what they were trying to get at. I asked my wife to help out with the translation and she is still laughing about it. But you never know when you may come across a shrine that has a crab in it, a crab around it and another crab smiling about it.

According to Wiki: Female carpenter bees are capable of stinging, but they are docile and rarely sting unless caught in the hand or otherwise directly provoked.

In the pursuit of knowledge and for the edification of TD members, I suggest you stick your finger in there and let us know exactly how far you have to provoke her before she stings. Wiki doesn't inform about how severe a Carpenter Bee sting might be, it is quite a big bee, maybe it packs a sting to match. You could rate it 1 to 10, 1 being not at all painful and 10 being taken screaming to ICU.

Better still, get your daughter to film it, she is quite good with a camera. I'd do it myself but I don't have a camera crew handy.

The hole is a bit high for me to reach and I have very tight H&S restrictions on working at height.
Then I remembered those guys who got deported for poking at a prawn or something so I decided that it would be wiser to leave the wildlife the fook alone.

^ Sounds like a load of codswallop to be honest.

    Very disappointing.

But in the interests of learning I'll maybe get the daughter to film me shoving a stick down a hole... it'll give us something to do. April's a slow month in Korat.
