    Where's Coco?

How well do YOU know Korat?

In this thread Coco gets out and about to visit some famous Korat landmarks. She will also visit some not so well known locations that will require a bit more skill and local knowledge.

    Free 'Greens' for correct answers!

I'll kick it off with three... and will add more ad hoc...

First up, Famous landmark No. 1. Where is Coco?

No. 2... You have a choice of four... where is Coco?

And No. 3, an early one for the experts... where is Coco?

^^^ One out of three mate, green owed but can't do it just now.

Not the North Gate, and I have no knowledge about Nev's bush!

Yes... the Suranari Statue. Thao Suranari is the royally bestowed title given to Lady Mo (or Ya Mo) 1771 - 1852. She was the wife of the deputy governor of Korat, which back then was the stronghold of Siamese control over Laos.

In 1826 Vientiane King Anouvong invaded Siam and took control of Korat. Lady Mo is reputed to have led an uprising, along with a load of other women, against the Laotian soldiers which led to them being routed back to Vientiane.

    Thao Suranari - Wikipedia

Even today, Thais 'wai' as they drive or walk past the statue... meanwhile in the UK Nelson's statue standing on it's column is under threat of being pulled down. Go figure...

This photo is apparently of Ya Mo... but did they even have cameras back in the 1820s?

    A nice looking lady.

You can have a green, but this one remains open!

I'll give a clue... it's a big junction and I'm hoping for the road numbers.

^ I found it in an 'Old Korat photos' directory on my pc, the file called Tawsuranaree... but I can't remember where I got it from. It was 'last edited' in 2011 and my memory doesn't go back that far.

I sincerely hopes that Coco is allowed out 'after-hours' and highlights the less PC areas of Korat

^ Fuk'n hell... brilliant stuff! Now the experts are coming out!

Yes, on the 224 heading south (towards Chok Chai) with the 226 heading off towards Buriram to the left.

A green your way... and one to HNZ also for laying the groundwork.

Easily my favourite junction in Korat.

Not sure about expert. Me and Mrs Toot on a stay in Korat about 4 years ago fancied Jap food but didn't fancy traipsing around too much so we asked the receptionist in the Korat Hotel where the nearest one was and we were directed to this place under a car park across the road. We popped in and thought it was a bit dingy but it definitely had Jap food, it also had Japs, lots of Japs all pissed up sitting in the curtained cubicles on the floor eating but simultaneously eating various ladies draped about them - we had a quick drink and left

I suspect the receptionist had a giggle

We went to Swiss Tony's or whatever his name is.

^ The 'expert' was for Ootai... the posts got out of synch!

There's a lot of Japanese expats in Korat and they keep themselves very separate from any 'farang' venues. The Japanese are working on expat deals and generally have a lot more money than the frugal Westerners here.

Could Swiss Tony's have been Chez Andy's? That's the only Swiss restaurant I know in Korat. He used to also have a restaurant on Koh Samui.

    I have 20/20 memory.
I can remember 20 minutes ago and I can remember 20 years ago. Everything in between is a bit of a blur.
