^ Google street view says it's now called MHK. I've no idea what that ... is but a quick Google search says it's a hair salon.

You might be noticing that these references are some 50 years old - changed considerably since the good old days.

Bob's site [one of numerous like sites] was a personal one.....former American GI Joes stationed in Korat, Ubon, Udon, etc.

.....I might suspect that old Bob isn't with us anymore.

^ i know they are a dwindling bunch, back in Korat late 90s' early 2000 used to meet lots and its a shame - they were a great bunch to have a drink with, some real characters and stories - most lost now sadly. Same goes for BKK knew quite a few Vets that never left and by and large very affable and generous characters. Its true they don't make them like they used to.

^ There are still some US vets in Korat. They meet up at their VFW chapter, or whatever it's called.

^^^^^ Yes Nev, in 2006 this was 'The Sport and Cocktail Bar' on Suebsiri Road. Back then it was a busy little bar with Wednesday quiz nights and football at the weekends. Then there was a very small group of expats and the atmosphere was very different to today. I live on the wrong side of town to have had this as a local, but spent many enjoyable evenings there before being picked up by the long suffering wife.

Paul left in around 2008/9 and Steve from Aussie took it over. Steve renamed the place 'The Walrus' to match his nickname due to his big floppy moustache. I would say Steve ran the place for around 5 or 6 years before sadly passing. A bit of trivia... I was Steve's first ever customer. Back then I was in the habit of stopping off for a quick drink when getting a taxi from home down to Swampy for an offshore job. It broke up the journey. One such time the taxi stopped outside and I popped in for a quick drink to find Steve sat behind the bar, his first day of opening, no ice, no aircon, no nothing... and no idea how to get anything. I had a warm bottle of Leo and a big slug of malt before heading on down the hill to Bangkok. I must admit I was surprised to see him still there a few weeks later when I returned from work. To his credit Steve turned it into a successful and popular little watering hole (by Korat standards) and he gained tremendous respect from the local expats before he sadly passed away. RIP Steve, a lovely guy who can't have had an easy life.

The last time I had a drink there it was a golf themed pub called 'The Nineteenth Hole' or some such predictable name. The walls had been painted lime green to represent the greens and for me the atmosphere had gone. But by then I'd lost interest in socialising in Korat for one reason or another and I hadn't visited again for several years, until today.

Going back to the 70s, there were quite numbered.
Officially, most were not decommission yet - when the Americans pulled out of Thailand and SE Asia. So...in the official military status, they were deserters/AWOL.

In those days, quite easy to "hide" and assimilate into Thai society without Thai officialdom showing any such concern - some become legal, others not. By then, they all had Thai wives and family, settling in.

Little attention, of this era, was placed in Laos - where numerous GI types and non-military civilian [intelligence/private circles] melded into Lao society, post wars.
Very similar as to the what was happening in Thailand.

Last one of the day... an easier 'Dillinger' hardness level.

And no green for just saying the obvious!

With all this rain today Coco wanted some ear muffs so we went to Location No. 8... Where is Coco?

Tesco Lotus, Hua Talay (Road 224).

I've been in there. Had lunch in the small food court.

Yeah... too easy. Tesco Lotus 2 as they call it, in Hua Thale. The second Tesco in Korat, built a few years ago.

When I moved to Korat in 2006 I had to drive into the city to get fresh milk... it was such a pain I used to bulk buy and freeze it.

Now I have this Tesco Lotus about 3km away, and closer still I have the choice of two 7 Elevens and a Tesco Express, all of which sell fresh milk. Korat is changing fast.

One thing I can't understand... I've never seen a Thai buy fresh milk but there's no where near enough Westerners around to support all the milk on sale. What's that all about?

I've seen Thais buy milk. I saw a guy buy a 2 litre bottle last week in a 7-11 just before I bought the last 2 litre bottle. Cafe's also buy it for coffee and I've even seen "Milk Cafes", that just sell cold milk drinks.

Yeah I guess they must... I've just never witnessed it. I don't know any Thais who drink milk but they will certainly have it in their coffee, and there's cafes all over the place.

Annoyingly I've almost used up my week's supply of pics for this thread in one day. But one last... a behind the scenes pic from this afternoon. It ain't easy getting the perfect shot and I guess I can see why my daughter's getting embarrassed being seen about town with her weird dad... We've had some strange looks.
