Reading some of the first pages of your pond thread right now . Very interesting.
By the way, the search option in this forum sucks at best. I could not find your tread to save my life, and then it occurred to me , why not do a Google search. I used the term "Pond Teak Door forum" and boom!! there it was. From now on I am using Google to search TD.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.
Congrats on the land purchase BB and look forward to your project. You need to start a thread. Is it adjoining to your current location or a stand alone piece of land that you will build a house on or just have a plot and a small pond?
It is all your fault! After seeing the size of your, and Mendip's . Well let's just say I felt inadequate. LOL
I am talking about land!! get your head out of the gutter p:
The land is about 5k from our house. Not sure what we will do with it yet, But I will certainly start a thread about it. It was a good deal , so worst case scenario we sell it and make some money.
I think 'sucks' is a level or two above TD's search function which is, well, not functionining.
I have a vague memory too, at least it functions occasionally which is way ahead of TD, and I seem to recall someone else posting about their pond. As I recall it had a concrete side with a flat lip inside maybe half a metre deep which was used as a shelf for some potted water plants. Maybe someone else remembers who that was.
It sounds like you're rural, BB, so I would probably add a garden observatory (With a mobile telescope as it's far from your house)
Lots on google. Brick with a retracting dome roof is cheap and easy.
Design and make a dirt remote control truck track.
Tortoises....Tortoises.... Turtles live in water, tortoises on land.
However with a pond we could plan on some aquatic turtle events, like 10 meter freestyle. Speaking of that, be different with your pond. Get yourself a few snapping turtles and maybe some Piranha. They will keep the fish population in check and keep you out of the green algae water. If the Piranhas do not attack you, the snapping turtles can easily take a few toes right off when bigger.
^^Did you know, the oldest land animal alive and who is still getting his leg over isn't Shutree, Ootai or Mendy's other mate, the Welsh one and just celebrated its 190th birthday (he was born before the lightbulb was invented)...
World's oldest land animal, Jonathan the tortoise, has 190th birthday
Yeah, I read that some time ago RD. It's the Giant Tortoise species also known as the Galapagos Tortoise. I have seen a few. They are huge.
Ours are Sulcata Tortoises. They can live 100 years. I laugh because they say they grow to 18" and 70 to 90lbs. That one big bastard Monster is 26" and clipping 110 lbs and is growing more because I see the white gap in each segment of its carapace. They have endless food sources around the place.
I found a snapping turtle for sale. I almost bought it to put in my water feature deal I made but knew it would grow fast and eat everything in it. Of course I could do some Buddha thing at the river like I see Thais doing when they let frogs and fish go and set it free. Make for interesting news when some guy wading for lotus flowers lost a few digits of his foot.
Yeas I see these turtles for sale, wife bought them a couple of times and released them in the lake.
I told her. "I hope you realise, the same people that sold it to you, tomorrow will come, catchit again and sell it"
your Tortoises (happy now?) live 100 years? What would happen to them after you are....you Know?
I gotta be honest here, I will be dead. So the Tortoises are on their own.
Btw, tortoises are not a desirable eat. Chinese like turtles however the shell could be cleaned up and used as a serving bowl for Som Tam or a planter or a big ash tray
I went fishing this morning and saw that the waterfall is blossoming which put me in a buoyant mood.
It's some kind of climbing plant and looks lovely when it flowers.
Despite the pond being crammed with fish I caught nothing and my buoyant mood lessened. As we say in Old Blighty, "When the wind's in the east, the fish bite least", and I guess it holds true in Isaan as well. We have a cold wind from the north-east at the moment.
While I was watching my float I did however see one fish cruising around just under the surface, with the unmistakable shape of a pla chon.
It was only around 5 inches long but of course it will grow. It looks as though we have a population of the b@stard snakehead back in the pond.
^ Why don't you just breed snake heads?
All hail the snakehead fish
Of all the fish here in Thailand, that's the only fish I will eat. It's quite tasty steamed and deep fried with various spicy sauces. They are also fun to catch while fishing with lures or plugs because they are so aggressive.
Of course they will kill everything in the pond as they get bigger.
Yeah freshwater. I like sea bass as an ocean variety. But honestly I do not eat fish that much anymore. When I do I usually only eat Salmon. I buy a full sized fish at Makro when I see them on sale and take home and cut into steaks and vacuum seal and freeze. Those Ocean Salmon from Norway are pretty good fish.
Being "Buoyant" is always a good idea when dealing with a deep body of water.
Seriously, your waterfall looks great!! nice picture.
Living in Thailand and more specifically up north, one thing I miss is fresh saltwater fish, IMO they taste much better than freshwater fish.
Living in FL I had access to some great fishing, and plenty of fresh fish available at very reasonable prices. My favorites were Red Snapper, and Mahi Mahi. ohh and let's not forget flounder.
Oh Yeah, fresh snapper or cod is outstanding. Mahi Mahi is also top stuff. I just can't eat the freshwater stuff here. They are all fed who knows what in dirty polluted ponds then dredged out of the mud to be sold at market.
I sure miss fresh trout and large mouth bass.
The pond was looking nice in the early morning sun today... quite a romantic setting for some.
Loy Toy sent me a picture of his klong. I must admit it doesn't look like I imagined. Does it flow through your property LT or does it form a boundary?
I would have loved running water on our property and with more space I'd like to make a 'mountain stream' by pumping out of the pond into a small, high reservoir and then running back into the pond. But we have no spare land to use.
