I've had the pleasure of meeting Mr and Mrs Shutree this weekend.

They got me in a mess on Friday night in town so today was a sedate affair. Here is Mr Shutree getting acquainted with Maya.

I've learnt two things about Shutree...

One is that I've been mentally pronouncing his name incorrectly all this time. It's pronounced Shoetree as in 'shoe', and not Shutree, as in 'shut'. There is also a story behind the name but that was early evening conversation and I can't for the life of me remember what it is. Something about a Chinese tree I think... or was it a Chinese shoe?

The second is that he ain't a great fisherman, although he did help clear the pond of branches.

The best dressed fisherman we've ever had!

Only kidding... we caught a fine pla duuk each and as the Shutree's didn't fancy taking a dead catfish on the six hour drive home tomorrow I got to keep them both!

And as a special treat for Willy we're having barbecued pla duuk for lunch tomorrow, so long as Anna doesn't steal one first. She loves her fish.

Did you and the shoetrees get on the piss? Great that your up for meeting TD members ive met a few over the years . Why not. Most people are interesting and usually turn out different in person to what you imagine them in real life.

^ 'Thrice', that's a word you don't hear very often these days and it strikes a chord with me.

When I write my my fascinating pipeline reports I always try and sneak a 'humorous' word in. The ultimate proof reader of these reports is a very old friend and this just amuses me... you have to make what you can of these jobs. The word 'twice' seems OK, but whenever I use 'thrice' he over-rules me and changes it to 'three times'. Why is 'twice' acceptable but not 'thrice'? I still try and sneak it in when he's over-worked and occasionally get one through. Simple things and all that.

    ^^^^, ^^

Shutree was exactly as I expected... as I think most people are. I think it's unusual to have an 'online persona' that isn't as you are in real life. Maybe some become bolder 'online' but I would happily meet up with anyone on TD, apart from maybe some of those Brittles... if the likes of Reg Dingle, Chitty, Hal or MalmoMike came round I would certainly hide the Ya Dong. In the case of Chitty I would probably hide the gardener as well.

Twice is acceptable because it is used in mainstream language while thrice is very old school and a word I have never used, so it must be OLD!

As for online persona's I am not so sure as you are way more humourous online than in person.
As for me i will never forget when I went and visited Wasp in Korat a few years ago, he said to me "I thought you were a bit more cultured but you are a lot rougher than I was expecting."
My reply was really cultured, I said "fuk off mate I'm an Aussie not a Brit wanker." Maybe the thought of me visiting again is why he hasn't returned to Thailand in a long time.

^ I'm shocked Ootai... that anyone would think you had any culture.

Whatever had given Wasp that impression?

How the hell would I know what Poms think or more so why they think what they do.

Yes, when I first went to work in the US, I always tried to use the word 'whilst' when writing memos to my boss, who was a dead wringer for Archie Bunker (for Americans of a certain age)/ Al Garnett (for similar aged Brits).
It used to drive him crazy "Write in English!" he used to scream at me on a regular basis

The wife and gardener laid on a fine Isaan spread for the Shutrees. It was nice to have visitors with a touch of class yet the Shutrees were more than happy to eat from our outside table and sit on our outside chairs whilst we were eating. Anna is having one of her 'pseudo' heats at the moment and our boys are a bit fractious so we kept them out of the way during the meal.

And please don't read anything into my comments, Ootai.

Anyway, this morning I finally managed a photo of this bird that has been a regular visitor for many months, if not years. A believe it's a Chinese Garden Heron and is more than welcome to help keep the fry numbers down.

I've got a 10 metre wide river running through our property at the moment Mendy and this has brought out the water monitor monsters as well many Herons.

Trouble is it is driving Bruno crazy as he wants to kill everything he can. Lucky we have the entrance gated off.

I will send you my email address and if you send me an email back I will send you some pictures.

We met at the Monkey Bar for a small libation. Followed by another and then some more. I don't get out much, I possibly overestimated my capacity. According to the gf Mendip was horizontal as his tuktuk pulled away. I walked the short distance to the Leosor Hotel, passing a Korean place on the way. The gf alleges that I tried to go in there, claiming that they had girls and drinks inside. I have no idea if they have waitresses or not, I never got inside, it seems the combination of steps up to the entrance and the gf assisting gravity by pulling behind me defeated my best efforts. I woke feeling sub-optimal and so the good lunch that Mendip kindly provided the next day was a sober affair.

Nice to meet Mendip and daughter. This was a long trip, about 900km out and back, including a stop in Roi Et to visit Norton, who was a generous host. His ribs were so good the gf just bought some in Makro and I have been challenged to produce something similar.

I enjoyed meeting both Mendip and Norton, very decent chaps all round. During this trip there was a suggestiion that we might meet again on neutral ground, perhaps Khon Kaen as a town within reach of all of us. Then there was a suggestion that we could make it a broader TD Isan gathering, probably in the new year. Mendip still has to work for a living so his diary is likely to be the key.

We were indeed happy to eat from the outside table. I mean, there were plates involved too. The table and chairs were spotless and the roaming pack were welcome to join us, they never tried to climb onto the table, despite the tempting pork.

Never met Mendip but yes I have met Norton.

After a session in Smug Farangs Bar he suggested we go to Soi Cowboy and his favourite bar. Well out on to Sukhumvit in Norton's car I told him we were heading for Pattaya. He done a perfect U Turn and headed back to Asoke where we finally landed in his favourite bar.

A lovely man who anyone would gell with immediately. I am privileged to know him and wish him many more years spreading his special love.

I guess Mendip and others are well worth the effort to make personal contact with as they are worth the effort.

^ I feel like a poor host now, I completely forgot to offer the Ya Dong around. I'm off it these days but the gardener always has a supply.

I'll bring some to Khon Kaen.

So, We just put down a deposit on a very nice parcel of land , a little more than a Rai.
Will be closing as soon as Transferwise transfers some funds from the US. (hope in a few days)
And would like to dig a small pond off to the side, (something like yours)
No need to be rediscovering the wheel
Any advice would be appreciated. , How deep? Wide, long? keeping in mind that I only have a bit more than a Rai. etc

And if you have to do yours over again , what would you have done differently?

I will go back and read your thread again , see what I can learn.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.
