It seems you have the answer to your problem here. Place a plump, live pla nin on a lure and you'll be reeling in the snakeheads before you know it.

I had to look up Mariamman.

Yes... that is pretty much my plan.

I'll await some pretty good rains to be forecast and then pump out the pond, from the bottom to hopefully remove the sludge, to maybe just 20% or 30% capacity. Then I hope to net out the big pla chon and the pla swai and restock with medium sized pla nin and pla tabtim. I'll never completely rid the pond of the fish I don't want but if I do this once a year I think it'll be controllable.

    No hand grenades.

In the meantime I'm hoping to get one of these solar powered paddle wheel aerator thingies. Strigils, you put up a link to these on Alibaba a few weeks ago... any idea if there's any downside to buying from Alibaba... customs charges, etc? I've never used them before. I've also found a place that sells them in Chon Buri so was thinking to take the littl'un down there for a trip some time and pick one up. The website's a bit chaotic but I think they have what I want.

I keep the waterfall on every day and the water seems to be better quality than last year, although some would probably still call it a bit green.

    A plan at last!

And whatever do you mean by 'make the gardener happy'? He's already got the best job in Isaan.

^^^ And KW... that's good to know, I hate waste.

I'll send you the next one... enjoy!

Exactly, as long as you get the ones large enough to cause probalms then you'll have solved most of teh problem and likely get more fish geneally as they must chew few quite a few smaller ones.

Erm, i assume he'll be getting his freezer restocked after you've been decluttering it with your fish and chips since you returned.

    Brilliant !!
I am very jealous of you pond , It looks great, though not of your fish problems. My property is not as big, so I cant have anything as big as yours, but I will admit I am suffering a bit from size envy. I have been told that with ponds is not the size, but how you use them, Well no one really told me that, it's more true that I told myself .
As soon as I get back to Thailand one of my first projects is to build a small waterfall , in fact I just ordered a waterfall spillway (8 inch discharge) from Amazon to bring with me , so I am looking for ideas. Some more pictures of your waterfall , and any design suggestions would be appreciated

LOL, I am sure to set some alarms when I get through customs.
Actually , I have found a Thai shipping company here in Florida ( we have a large Thai population here) , that lets me share a container with others. It will take 2-3 months to get there, but I don't care , and wife has a one time repatriation with no duty for personal items, so I plan to tell them that the spillway is my personal OSHA approved safety head gear LOL, what would somchai know about safety LOL. Anyway to ship to my door in Khon Kaen , they only charge $140 for a box 24"x18"x18" each , I plan to ship 5-6 boxes. I fill the boxes with clothing , and in-between the clothing I stuff all things that are breakable. Since I am bringing the boxes, and weight is not an issue. I am collecting used clothing that is in good shape (I have gotten items that still have the labels on) which of course I will remove for customs, and I let the neighbors in the village go through the boxes and take any of the used clothing they want. I had done that once before and it was a huge success , the people loved it.

And after 2-3 months that will feel like a present all to yourself. I do it with Lazada when I'm drunk and 4 weeks down the line an odd football shirt turns up in the post brightening my day.

^ I'm not sure my pond happenings are exciting enough for daily updates David!

    But in saying that...

If you look at the lower mango at the right of the pic... I've been worried for some time that it would eventually touch the surface of the water.

This pic was taken yesterday... today the mango is one inch submerged.

And during the 'hot as hell' season the pond continues to provide a means to cool the dogs...

dangling your mangos in the pond to cool seems like a smart idea until you remember the pla chon

    Too right Baldrick.

Max (^^^) has already been detached from his pair of mangoes and seems to bathe unconcerned. I've noticed that our two 'complete' boys are a bit more circumspect about cooling themselves down.

I had a walk around the pond today and discovered this...

The gardener has earnt his salt this week by spending some time rigging up this support for the branch, thus saving me one mango.

Let's hope we get no wind over the next few weeks.

I like that he notices these things... but why not just pick it while hard and green like all the others. Very few survive through to full ripeness round here.

Things are finally looking up with the pond problems.

I've bought meself a throw net. I've seen fishermen using them on the telly and it looks pretty straight forward.

There were quite a lot for sale on Lazada so after some thought I went for the one with a pretty girl on the advert, and it arrived today.

Now that I see the thing in real life I must admit that the potential for tangles looks pretty high so I'm going to practice in the pool first to perfect my technique.
