It was the same fish getting a decent feed today.
It was the same fish getting a decent feed today.
My mum always taught me never to give up. We were hungry and had nothing for dinner. Despite a long day and wanting to get back to the house, I decided to try a few casts off to the starboard of the jetty.
Maya's no slouch, she saw my tactics immediately and kept watch...
She watches the float... the best dog we have.
And then I was in....Another b@stard catfish. I'm starting to regret releasing all the gardener's 'pla ra' catfish into the pond from the tank. I may have gained major merit from all the lives I saved but FFS, it doesn't help me catch my tea.
This one had, in fact, taken the hook down too far so my gardener gratefully received his tea.
And that was it really... nothing but catfish. You can't have 'catfish and chips', unless you're Jeff... where are you btw?
But...
Hang on...
Late on the float dipped under again.
Another catfish? I was ready for my chaser...
Hey, there's not barbels... that's not a catfish head...
Looks like a pla nin to me!
Wow... we have tea. As any fisherman knows the most critical time of landing a fish is getting it in the net. More fish are lost at this stage than at any oter time.
Even with my stupid 'Asian pretty' sized landing net, I kept it low and drew the fish over...
Ha! We have tea!
A beautiful pla nin... free range, organic, anti-biotic and hormone free... nothing like the crap you get at the markets. To be honest I sometimes regret killing these guys.
I've got very soft in my old age.
Maya loves her fish.
And it's fish an' chips tonight!
Note of advice guys... don't stick a cheap blue plate in the microwave for more than 2 minutes!
Yum, and at this hour you probably wont eat until 9:00pm
Great saga Mendip, we have all thoroughly enjoyed reading it, seeing the pictures and all the information that you and others have provided. You must feel great to be back fishing with your daughter. Thanks again for posting all of this.
Yea Mendip, that quarry on the climb up to the Korat plateau is quite a sight. I assume that is the one you were talking about when you mentioned those limestone rocks you got off the back of a tuktuk.
^ While they were recently building the elevated motorway section by Lam Takong there was a rich bounty of limestone rocks alongside the road. It's amazing how my collection built up by just adding 2 or 3 pieces every time I drove past.
And HW, I've just noticed your comments (with innuendo of course) above.
I have to take issue here. Yes, the saying is 'fish on', but when a fish is on, you are 'in'. If you see what I mean.
Anyway, while I had my New Year's Day morning coffee I noticed some new additions swimming around the margins of the pond. I'm hoping that now the snakehead have gone the frogs will return. I don't think the pla nin or pla duuk will eat tadpoles and young frogs but I guess I'll find out in due course.
Anna of course joined me after her broken night's sleep due to the fireworks last night. Yogi was in close attendance... she must have the patience of a saint.
The pier is holding up well. I have liberated a few blocks of laterite on my road trip, not from any historical sites i might add.
Good to see Anna is "Bedding in", i wonder if her being the only menstruating dog whether that will make any difference to the order of things.
^ Make sure you're very discreet when 'collecting' rocks and boulders, especially of you're going for pieces of limestone. This kind of fossicking is frowned upon which is why I took the long term approach and just collected a couple of pieces at a time.
I built a couple of small cairns out of laterite boulders around the edge of our pond to cover inlet water pipes leading from guttering. I really like the look of laterite. When a neighbour was having some building work done he had a few truck loads of laterite laid along our common unmade-up road as his building trucks destroyed the old surface. The dumped laterite contained quite a few of these boulders which I levered out of the road with a crowbar when he wasn't around.
^^^ I had a better look this afternoon and the pond is inundated with small black tadpoles. I've never see this before and it's a strange time of year for spawn to be laid. Usually the frogs and toads spawn with the first proper rains, maybe around May or June and I have no idea why they'd be spawning in the middle of the dry season. Hopefully this will be from tree frogs but maybe someone else has some idea?
I have seen this before; it was the start of a Hitchcock movie…best to get out of there now… NOW!
Don't kick the damn thing.
Me and my ex-father in-law, (wasn't ex at the time) we were fishing off the Flagler pier and all we were caching was catfish, finally Luke had enough , next catfish he cough , all pissed off he drop kicked it off the pier,
Next day his foot was swelled like a balloon. It turns out these catfish have some sort of a bacteria on their dorsal fin, and when he drop kicked it puncture the skin on his foot.
Luke was diabetic, and it damn near killed him.
He passed away a few years ago, and I miss him dearly, even though me and his daughter got divorced, we had remained good friends ,and when ever we got together we would always laugh about the catfish that almost killed him, he would always claim that it was well worth it.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.
Many Tadpoles, soon many frogs and soon many snakes!
^^ The pla duuk have a spine on the leading edge of their dorsal fin and the two pectoral fins. I've got a small puncture wound from handling one of the catfish I put back and it's gone a bit infected. They pretty much always go a bit bad if I forget to clean the wound.
And don't tell me Cal... the best way to get rid of them is hand grenades?
But no problem, I like snakes anyway!
Mendy. Twice I had what baffled me at first. In my swimming pool skimmer box what appeared to be a huge clump of slimy spongey stuff. I had no idea what it was but turned out to be frog spawn. That sure surprised me the pool was salt. They must be pretty adaptable little critters

Aaaaaggghhhhhh ! You utter, utter bastard!!!!
Despite all the effort it must be cool to have your own fishing pond.
If I ever get another big piece of land it could be fun to have a fishing pond.
