^^ Joe, I made my mum a lovely pond many years ago. Dig a hole and then put in a layer of sand and then bed it with a layer of old carpet if you have any. That takes away any sharp edges before you lay down the pond liner.
As Buckaroo Bonzai (sp... sorry, your post is on a previous page) says, surround by a layer of cemented-in coping stones that overlap over the pool edges. Looks great, and provides some cover from all the herons in Manchester for the fish.
Anyway, I popped in to Makro today and as usual there was a tray of live pla chon. I'm surprised they aren't better enclosed as these buggers have huge teeth and strong jaws - can strip your finger... a worry for kids. I wasn't even tempted to waggle my finger in front of these.
This brought me back to the fateful day a few years ago I bought four pla chon for my pond... It wasn't Makro but I remember the girl at the Flower Market in town being a bit perturbed when I refused her offer of dispatching and cleaning the fish, in favour of taking them home alive.
The rest, as they say, is history...
Mendip, when are you going to go native and just plug the pond into the mains and solve the Jaws problem.
^ I do have a long term plan which doesn't involve electrocuting all of my pond life... but finding the time is the problem. My 90 days will be up soon so now I'm having to sort out an extension... which is new territory for me... and I'm still waiting for a new passport to pick up from Bangkok. Three hours plus in Korat's awful traffic doesn't help matters either.
But in the meantime... today these bad boys finally arrived from Lazada.
Looks like pla chon for tea!
Mendy buddy,
Being an avid Snakehead fisherman and having entered a number of Snakehead fishing tournaments over the years here, those plugs are a good choice......HOWEVER.... Snakehead fish do not typically hit plugs unless they are protecting their fry. They are an extremely aggressive protective fish and you drag one of those plugs near their young and they attack it. They also tend to not be aggressive in warmer water and certain times of year. They are far more aggressive in late July through September when they are protecting their young. Younger fish typically do not hit lures or plugs. Usually mature fish.
Anyway, good luck.
That's a good endorsement JP... according to Lazada the pla chon are practically in the pan once you use one of these lures.
Perfect overcast conditions this afternoon as well.
Well, maybe not quite perfect...
Ya know, I can't believe how bloody difficult it's proving to be to catch a bloody fish in my own garden bloody pond. After an hour I gave up.
Maybe I should have had a popper party, whatever that is?
So, back to the drawing board it is.
^ The blurter boys!
It has been a little frosty with Mrs Mendip lately but I'm sure she'll come around. Always a problem with being away for a long time... you both get used to your own space and using my daughter's underwear as a snot rag hasn't helped.
Thankfully she doesn't know the half of it!
Nice pictures! love reading your thread !
which reminds me of an addition on what to bring to Thailand thread. A couple of my reels and a brake down rod if I can fit it in the box.
Edit: Cancel that thought, just checked in Lazada. More Rods and Reels for reasonable prices that you can shake rod at.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.
^ You can use any bait you like... still catch nothing.
Time to drain it and start again.
Breed Koi and make a packet!
They were fukcing comets!
Flouce, or don't flounce. They were comets and I will kill you if you say otherwise!
As is my habit, today I had a quick walk around the pond first thing with my cup of tea and the dogs.
Something immediately caught my eye...
... and my worst fears were confirmed.
Another large pla nin had been viciously attacked and died. I netted it out to investigate.
This is my unchewed Puma size 45 for scale. This pla nin must have been well over a kilo when complete and would have made a fine fish and chips.
The tail was gone, much of the mouth and there was a big bite taken out of the back of it's neck.
Here is Maya for scale... whatever took that bite out of the pla nin must have had wider jaws then her... makes you wonder just how big our snakehead are. I really must do something about this.
All this messing about by the pond had made me late for the school run, so with the wife screeching I high tailed it off to the car, took my eye off the ball and skidded in one of Yogi's big green turds. The wife not letting up, I had a cursory wash down with a hose and continued to the car to get going rapido.
Well... I must say that the combined stench of rotten fish and dog shit in the car was quite overpowering this morning, much to the daughter's disgust... and embarrassment because we picked up one of her classmates on the way.
When we arrived at school I tried and failed to get a kiss on the cheek.
I said, "Good luck with your science presentation, darling"!
She retorted, "Good luck with your life, dad".
What a start to the day...

Ain't life a bitch?
It stinks and is shit!
But better than the alternative.
Your daughter is getting to the stage where you will have to drop her off 500m from the school so that you don't embarrass her.
When my daughter got to that stage I warned her that she needed to be careful or I really would embarrass her by turning up in dirty holey clothes with a hat on that had corks tied around it. She never tested me thankfully.
