^ Maybe he waits for some idiot like me to pick up all the bottle tops in the daytime so all his 'beeps' may be something more worthwhile?

The tide times change. Maybe it's better to search at low tide when the last high tide has disturbed the sediment and exposed new 'treasure'. It could have been coincidental that low tide was also in the evening at that time? This has given me a thought for tomorrow's treasure hunting!

We still find a lot of unexploded and/or dumped munitions from both world wars during offshore surveys. The Norwegian fjords were heavily mined by the Allies and Germans, and it's all still out there. One year a pipeline is free of problems, the next year a new mine has been trawled in by fishermen. In the Baltic a big problem is dumped chemical munitions.

Years ago dumping munitions in the sea meant getting rid of them, but with development in the oil industry it has all come home to roost.

Yeah, the Mel Fisher story is fascinating.

I read somewhere that 80% of the gold that has ever been mined now lies on the bottom of the sea - such was the traffic between the new world and Spain and Portugal.

I used to dabble in this and have some 18 century Chinese porcelain from offshore Vietnam (Vung Tau) and a gold sovereign from a wreck in the bay of Biscay, unfortunately not from projects I was on.

All this work is on 'no cure, no pay'. A single man's game. Great if you're in your 20s and single and willing to take the gamble. Now I just can't work for two months with no guaranteed pay, when in my 50s with dependents...

But your point about taking things further with my daughter is a great one. Hopefully will spark her interest for the future. I need to learn some Thai history as I would have some idea where to start in the UK but absolutely no clue in Thailand.

Have you ever come across any nuclear waste dumped in the North Sea, Mendip?

^ Not to my knowledge, but the sea has been a dumping ground for years.

The worst has been dumped chemical munitions (probably mustard gas) in the Baltic Sea. There has been a lot of work there recently with the Nord Stream pipelines developments.

The thing is, its obviously not labelled, and 70 years on one rusty barrel looks a lot like another.

    Day 2 - Rayong

A nice thing about holidays is that we seem to make the effort to do stuff. But, my daughter beat me at chess last night. I'm used to girls in bars beating me at Connect 4 but an eight year-old beating me at chess gave me the hump.

But anyway, a new day, overcast and perfect treasure hunting conditions.

We decided to try a small sandy patch of beach right in front of the hotel pool. Plenty of foot traffic and plenty of opportunity for dropped money and jewellery.

Also plenty of opportunity for dropped litter. Our haul today...

One of the foil sachets was about 4 inches down, so probably quite old and further proof of the effectiveness of the metal detector. Several old squid lures gave a good 'beep', but probably the most interesting find was a Red Bull bottle top dating back to 2017.

Just the TAT insisting that any UXO sweeps are done under the cover of darkness so as not to risk alarming tourists.

Decided to go to the other side of the bay today to try out luck - and to be honest my little 'un is already showing signs of treasure hunting fatigue...

We were confronted with this. So I though bollocks to that, no point in digging up even more crap that's buried out of the way. The metal detector was given a rest today.

On the good side, we also found this...

And as the whole point of the exercise is to get my little girl off the tablet, an enjoyable hour was had collecting shells. We now have enough for a year's worth of school art projects.

Today's haul... and whoever heard of collecting shells without a beer?

    Nice thread Mendip!
Met an American woman who earnt a modest living metal detecting on Koh Samui beaches.
She had found an engagement ring worth a few thousand dollars.

Perfect overcast conditions again for a spot of pre-breakfast treasure hunting.

New day and new tactics. Decided to try our luck in the sand filled gullies between the bedrock today. You can just imagine, over the years, coins and golden jewellery collecting in these places as each tide sorts and deposits the heavy metal items.

Unfortunately the tides also seem to sort and deposit other pieces of metal as well... No 'few thousand dollar' engagement ring today...

The small round item at the front did momentarily cause major excitement when we thought we'd hit the mother-load and found a 1 Baht coin, but after washing it off it turned out to be a small flattened bottle top.

The session wasn't a complete disaster though. After getting bored of digging up tin can tops we went rock pooling and caught a few crabs. Brought back childhood memories of holidays in Lyme Regis, UK.

This was the biggest, and much to the wife's disgust we let him go to fight another day.

Rockpooling with kids is great - used to spend hours hunting. I should imagine she's had a great time despite not finding enough for dad to retire on.

^^ Yeah, she's having a great time. A good kid, she only comes metal detecting to humour me!

No retirement for me. Looks like I'll be offshore for another 15 years the way things are going.

^ I know, a failure there. But we've only got one bucket and that's for the treasure.

Well, Rayong's full of metal shite so we gave up. Drove back to Korat this morning for some proper Isaan treasure hunting.

Had a nice 'bleep' straight away in the back garden...

This didn't feel like your usual Rayong bottle top, so thought it worth pursuing. Hot work this, even hit the water table. Must be old, whatever it is...

Shit! This is deep. Good for my new fitness regime though - who needs a gym? Thankfully not too hot today...

    Jaysus, knackered now...

Should have listened to me mum. She always said the secret to treasure hunting is knowing when to give up. Tomorrow's another day.

Mendip - what fish are you planning stocking? I thought you had a pond already.

So you're not going with the treasure hunting subterfuge then?

To be honest I was bored last night and found a few pics from when we dug out the pond a few years ago. It's now full of tilapia (pla nin and pla tab tim). I caught a 5.5kg catfish (pla dook?) in there last year. A couple of years ago we were getting so many fry from the pla nin breeding, I added four pla chon (again ?) I got from the market. My hope was these would be the equivalent of a pike in the UK and they seem to have controlled the numbers of fry.

Maybe I should do a thread on building and stocking the pond?

There ya go NPT, the catfish I caught. There's bigger ones in there. Our gardener took this one to make a curry with some mates. Personally I really don't like the flavour of catfish.
