Today started a bit sad... the two puppies were picked up first thing. My daughter had got attached to 'Yogi 2' as she called him, and I must admit I was very fond of the girl who looked a bit Bangkeowish. There is a Bangkeow that wanders around that area in the mornings and I reckon he was having some fun a few weeks back. Poor littlun was a bit upset this morning.

But of course they had to go, along with 1000 Baht to get the girl neutered when she's old enough (and yes, I trust this will happen... we know these people). I'm well aware how easily I could be scammed when offering to pay for neutering.

At lunchtime we had a call that someone wanted the black boy and a girl... another two!

We arrived on location and my wonderful daughter had brought some secateurs after seeing the problems I'd had yesterday. What a wonderful girl she is.

    Nice one Mendip.

Makes you wonder how many soi dogs are suffering around Thailand now without those who would normally go out of there way to feed them.

So, the black boy and a girl wanted... no problem.

I went into the undergrowth again and immediately found two brown puppies together... the first one a girl. No sign of the black boy, but I figured it best to find out the sex of the second puppy I could see, before looking any further.

This bugger was just out of reach... by inches. The thorns were digging in my shoulders and even at full stretch I could only just touch it's front legs...

Fark me... how frustrating... just couldn't reach...

But finally... I wriggled a bit further and just managed to grab it's hind legs. Dragged it out of the den and held it tight.

Disaster... another bladdy girl! I'd figured even if it wasn't the black boy, any boy would do. I took a picture while still trapped in the dog's den and sent it off. Would they be happy to take two girls... 2000 Baht cost for me to get both neutered, but no problem after all this...

I waited... and waited for a response... Such a beautiful puppy but no-one wants the girls. She looked at me, kind of understanding this was a life changing moment...

The ants crawled over me, scorpions and centipedes scuttled around... more moments passed... I'm sure I heard a python slither past...

My phone rang... YES!!! They would take two girls!!!!

If you're in the soi puppy home finding game, this is as good as it gets. Two girls in one day!!! The winning the lottery of puppy home finding.

It's an old cliche I know, but as far as I remember, this feeling was better than sex! It was certainly better than having a wank in the office and have the gardener walk in.

Let's just say I was as chuffed as fuk.

Here is my daughter with the two pups in our trusty Leo box... looking uncharacteristically stern.

I know this look, and I know exactly who and where it comes from. Apparently one of the puppies had shat on her arm and she was well pissed off. I get this exact same look from her mother when I do something wrong... although to my knowledge I've yet to accidentally shit on her.

We get them back home, give them their first ever bath, and all is good. Both in excellent health, nice and plump and not a flea or tick between them. I must admit to some guilt when dragging these pups away from an obviously good mum (and equal guilt to the mum for stealing her kids), but a few weeks down the road and these guys would be starving, crippled or at best, just flattened on the road. You have to save them when you can.

    The smile back again!

What a lovely pair. In case anyone is annoyed they missed out... there's two more from this litter and another litter so far unseen. Just get in touch!

And in to their new temporary home. We're keeping these for at least two days... for the daughter. Probably not a good idea but it's Easter after all.

One problem with pups this young (6 weeks) is that they have never lapped a drink or eaten solid food. They have only taken off their mum's teats. It should be down to the mum to wean them, but with our intervention we have to help out.

A mixture of cow's milk and water fed by a syringe... to give them the taste...

And after that, leave them alone and they figure it all out. These dogs are survivors. We force a few bits of chicken and minced beef (their first ever solid food) in their mouths, then leave the rest in a bowl. Guaranteed the bowl will be empty in the morning. I find this incredibly rewarding.

As does my daughter, introducing them to their temporary family...

    Chaos...

The new arrivals are settling in nicely!

    Gorgeous pair of sisters!

No steak and kidney pie for these guys sadly... just a bowl of milk. They've learned to lap up the milk no problem... in just a few hours.

And one little girl will be very sad when they get picked up in a day or two...

I will take you up that one day LoyToy... many thanks.

More important than ever now... if you look a couple of pages up, when the neighbour moved out with her 16 dogs I lent her my dog crate to help out, and she never brought it back!

Not for the first time I've regretted doing someone a good turn in Thailand.

I've got one very sad daughter today... the two latest puppies have been picked up. The two gorgeous little sisters are heading to Khon Buri, about an hour's drive away. The best of luck to them!

They had only taken milk from the mother's teat before we picked them up, and in the two short days we had them...

    They learnt to lap water...

    They learnt to lap milk...

And they started to eat solid food...

Dan kept a motherly eye on them, and I do believe she was a bit upset when they left as well.

    One last 'selfie'

Sad as it was to see these guys leave... that's the way it is, you can't keep them all.

But... there's more good news! The last two from this litter, a black boy and a dark brown girl have got a 'possible' home together. I took the daughter for a bike ride to cheer her up, and to see how these pups are doing...

The brown mum was still around, but no sign of the pups. She must have moved them, and who can blame her after we took the four others. I'm not too concerned about this as we will surely hear them or see them running around at some point as they grow up and the mum loses control. Hopefully we'll have them homed over the next week.

While we were there I decided to look for the other mum's litter... she is another of Anna's nieces. She was keeping an eye on us as we approached her area...

After 10 minutes or so we found them!

A litter of only five, which is good news (at least, we could only see five). All of them white, like the mum.

These look to be in great condition. I've no idea of their sex as I didn't want to disturb them too much and risk the mum moving the litter. Five more homes to find...

My daughter and I spent an hour this morning searching for the remaining two puppies from the first litter. Well, to be exact I spent an hour in 35 degree heat trampling through the undergrowth, getting scratched to bits, filling my fingers with splinters and providing a feast for the red ants while my daughter sat on her bike and complained about how hot it was.

We saw the brown mum and she led us on a wild goose chase... she's smart and knows what's going on and I reckon she deliberately led us away from the pups. At least it looks as though she's still suckling, but finding a black and a brown pup in the undergrowth ain't gonna be easy, especially if mum has taught them to stay quiet. It's usually the yapping that gives them away in the end. I hope we find them before they go wild as both have a good home to go to. We'll try again tonight when t cools down.

Before going back home I decided to check on the second litter from the white mum. There are definitely five in this litter, sex so far unknown due to being located right in the middle of a thorn bush. These guys are now five weeks old and you'd be hard pressed to find a better looking and healthier litter of puppies. All will be wanting a home in a couple of weeks or so...

My daughter wants to keep one and I'm OK with that but she'll have to get it past the Commandant.

Mr Dillinger... you want a playmate for that thing you call a dog?

I took the daughter out for a bike ride this evening, up to the brown mum dog's area to see if we could find her puppies. When we arrived she ran off, but amazingly we found the black boy puppy sitting on his own. I picked him up, no aggression or anything, and wondered what to do. There was no sign of his brown sister, and I didn't really want to take just one of the remaining two pups away, so I put him down in the hope he would lead us to his sister.

He ran off into the undergrowth...

I crawled in after him and he went straight into a huge pile of dead thorn bush.

And voila! He went straight to his little sister. If you look carefully at this pic you can see the black boy's two beady eyes just to the left of the brown girl's head. Looks like she has a black body as well.

And a better pic of the girl...

I was lying on my stomach here, with phone at full reach to take the pic. These two buggers were still at least a metre and a half in front, through an impenetrable barrier of thorn branches. No way I could get them tonight... that is a job for tomorrow morning.

Fingers crossed that the mum doesn't move them again and we can catch them tomorrow... these two have a home together in Roi Et. A good home too where they will be living inside the house with the parents of a guy we know who works in Korat. With success tomorrow that will be another litter of 6 puppies homed and just the litter of 5 white ones to go.

It'd be nice for something good to come out of this CORVID lock down, and I'm hoping to keep a white girl pup for our pack - it would really give me daughter something to focus on while she's stuck at home for so long with home schooling. Just have to get it past the Commandant...

We didn't get going until 9am today... and it was already 36 degrees. The daughter wasn't happy about being involved, but I needed a trip photographer and no way will I let her stay all day on the screen. So bad luck!

When we arrived on location there was no sign of the mum. I was worried that she had moved the last two pups after we had disturbed them last night.

Only one way to find out... yesterday they were a few metres under this load of dead thorn bushes...

    So in I went...

And yes! They were still there, in a hole at the back of this pic and not really visible. Well out of reach though...

Only one thing to do... cut each individual thorn branch to gradually inch towards the pups. It wasn't just being scratched by the the thorns, or being soaked in sweat and covered in dusty mud, there was also a nest of those horrible little black ants that bit me all around the scrotum area. That stung like hell.

Eventually... after about an hour and a large bottle of water... I reached the brown girl pup. She was very frightened and nipped a bit, but no problem and not her fault. I passed her back to my intrepid daughter and continued on for the black boy. He had retreated even further into the thorns.

And finally... success!!! The black boy pup and the final pup of this litter! He was amazingly calm all things considered.

And here they are, brother and sister. Our work here done!

While it was great to rescue these last two pups, it is also sad for the mum and I do have regret about that. At seven weeks old the mum is still feeding the pups and will be upset that we've taken them. But... within another two or three weeks she would rapidly be losing interest in the puppies and soon after that, they'd be competing with the other adult street dogs for food. Unless they're very tame and come right up to you for food, they would have no chance. The adult dogs would take all the food leaving the pups to gradually starve to death. I've seen that all too often. I think that having an upset mum for a couple of days is a small price to pay to get two puppies off the street and into a good home. The mum will bounce back... but I left her a large bowl of food as some kind of apology as I do feel very sorry for her.

We brought these two guys back home, but not in the usual trusty Leo box, as despite being only seven weeks old they were way too big for that and we had to find a bigger one. The mum had been doing a great job of feeding them, mainly I guess because we had already taken four from the litter so she had surplus milk.

And their first shower! I needed one as well so stripped off to wash the puppies.

They were remarkably clean and pest-free considering their former home.

And one happy little girl drying off the two lucky pups.

At least... one happy little girl while we keep the pups for a couple of days! I want to teach them to lap water and milk, and start them on solid food before they go off to their new home in Roi Et. When they get picked up it'll be an unhappy daughter again... but only for a few hours.

The pups settle into their temporary home. Where would I be without Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney pie tins!

Just a quick update... it never ceases to amaze me how quickly these dogs acclimatise to a new environment. This time yesterday these two pups hadn't had contact with humans, and their first up-close encounter was this morning with my ugly mug, replete with 70's porn star moustache, staring in at them in their den at the bottom of a thorn bush. The girl was well frightened, and who could blame her.

A few hours later and we're doing selfies!

These guys have already learnt to lap water and milk, having never done so before. And they've had their first sample of solid food... sadly not a real Fray Bentos, but they don't know that!

    Cute or what...

Although they will have to learn to eat fast...

And they're already being shown the ropes by their temporary foster parents!

It is so rewarding to give these guys a chance in life... and keeps meself and the daughter occupied during these lock down times.

I'm sure there are many people reading this, now pissed off that all the puppies from that litter are homed. Fear not... there is one more litter of five to go!

For a beautiful white puppy in the pics above, just get in touch!
