I'm thinking longer than that, Helge.
I'm glad that you clarified 'human', in which case I would expect at least 50 years of bad temper, aggressiveness and general antagonism. Unfortunately the human female 'season' doesn't seem to come with a willingness for sex.
But anyway, the good Christmas cheer here is that Anna's season seems to have finished. I desegregated the dogs today and things seem to be getting back to fairly normal. Yogi has had Anna to himself for the last few days and now has to learn to share again.
He seems to be learning fast.
This is why I sometimes wish I was a dog. Yogi has acted like an offshore worker after a six week trip and been at it non-stop for the last few days. Then as soon as her season finished and she was no longer into it, he had a go at Maya... and she's not even in season. He was just in the mood. We've all been there.
Anna no longer wants Yogi but she also doesn't want him looking elsewhere. It's just like real life.
Yogi has had to keep the girls apart to stop a fight over nothing.
Yeah, he is absolutely despicable. I think he's great.
Anna gets moody... so move on. I could learn a lot from Yogi.
^
Or if that doesn't work, start sniffing the females' asses ?
Very scienctifically
I wanted to post these pictures again here to help document Anna's journey from a life on the street to a life in a loving home.
I think it is lucky that her season finished just before Christmas...
Because her Mother Christmas costume would have driven Yogi to distraction!
Good one
And I don't see any hate in her eyes
^ Anna seems to really enjoy this kind of thing, Helge.
Anyway, now that Anna's season is over, we have a calmer, more peaceful household again. And Tommy - always the bridesmaid, never the bride - has been able to renew his friendship with Anna now that Yogi's lost interest.
Purely plutonic, of course. Poor old Tommy.
I wish I could say the same here. Last week the older female died so we are now down to five dogs, 3 older males (brothers) and the 2 "pups" who are not really pups anymore.
The female has or is coming into season and the boys are all going crazy.
So last evening 2 of them started fighting which I was happy to let go but then the third joined in and one was getting chewed up so being the hero (stupid) I jumped in and grabbed Garn who was the third one in and is the biggest dog.
Well he didn't like me interfering and thought I was just another opponent.
I had hold of his legs and was holding up off the ground but I forgot how flexible they are and he took a big bite on my left calf.
So off to the hospital to get it stitched. When the nurse/doctor was cleaning the would she stuck her finger into the hole and was well over an inch deep.
So they put a couple of stitches inside the hole, none outside in case it gets infected and they need access to clean it again.
Then off to get jabbed like a pin cushion.
One was antibiotics and the other 2 rabies shots, I fast acting and the other a normal first shot vaccination.
Gotta go back in 3 days for the next one.
Altogether I spent 3.5 hours at the hospital, half and hour to clean and stitch the would and then 3 hours waiting for the Doctor to come to work and write the prescriptions.
Cost me B4,020.
Moral of the story for me is in future they can fukkin kill each other.
^^ Sorry to hear about your accident Ootai, but I must admit I have wondered several times why on earth you don't get your bitches speyed but I've been too polite to mention it. Get them vaccinated against rabies as well and job done.
We've had a few dog fights over the years and almost without exception the only injuries have been suffered by my good self, trying to split them up. The dogs make a lot of noise and it looks nasty but they invariably end up with just a few scratches and grazes. I tend to just yell at them these days and throw a bucket of water over the fight and nine times out of ten they slink off unharmed.
In fact for a couple of years now the only proper injuries we've had have been caused by Maya on the other two bitches, Coco and Anna who have both needed stitches. It's strange because Maya is our most sociable dog to humans but when she gets jealous and loses her temper with the two girl dogs she really loses it... she just goes completely mental and loses all control and reason. A bit like the wife, really.
@ootai - my commiserations. I had to have a series of anti rabies injections, cost me P6,250 around 10 years ago. The whole treatment was 5 shots at intervals of 2 or 3 weeks between each shot (if I remember correctly). One shot cost P1,250. Why that amount - it was 1/2 of a vial. The cost of 1 vial was P2,500 and it was good for 2 shots/ doses. I was bitten by a neighbour's dog & I tried to pat the head while I fed it (stupid me!).
So I went to a local public hospital to get the shots. The nurses there said that I had to buy my own anti-rabies shot. They said that 1 vial was goof for 2 persons/ doses and that once opened, the contents of the vial had to injected ASAP. They told me to wait a little & that someone might come who also was bitten, so that we could split the costs.
Fortunately, around 15 min later, a guy came & he also needed the shots. We split the cost of the vial & bought our own syringes from the pharmacy across (as instructed by the nurses). We went back to the hospital & the nurses injected us, for free. Since it was a public hospital, there was no "service fee" from the nurses/ hospital but we had to buy our own stuff. The other guy & I would text each other to make appointments to be at the hospital together when our shots were due.
Moral of the story (for me): don't touch the neighbour's dogs! (we didn't have dogs of our own then, so I missed having dogs)
I am afraid that would be quite pointless as the Missus is past the stage of getting in season.
As for the female dog I have given up trying to get my Missus to take her and previously her Mum to the vet. All I can think is my wife just does not want to spend money, or she thinks we should just let nature take its course. I mean Thai's don't castrate their bull calves let alone their dogs, Mendip is the only one I know and even he regrets that sometimes.
The wife just uses injections to stop them coming on heat or to force them to abort. In fact I am half convinced that is why the female died last week. I think she probably didn't abort everything properly and go an internal infection.
I suppose I could take them to a Vet myself but I have only been to one once and she didn't speak English so me doing it is fraught were danger.
I have learned to pick my battles and whenever it requires some reasoning she (the wife) just gets cranky so I leave it be.
Ouch ootai. But you are spot on. But here is the other problem, you let them tear ech other up and now you have vet bills.
One thing I learned years back in the states was only keep all male or are female unless you are a breeder. Once you mix sadly you are subjected to that mating ritual and it's work.
Our neighbor just had this same event. Has 4 dogs. 2 of each M/F. Well a week or so ago it got stupid and I was told that one of the females was killed. Not sure how or why but you could hear that throwdown like it was happening at my house. Went on for 20 minutes of endless barking growling, yelping.
Good luck on your wound healing.
Happy New Year
Our females are speyed, two with no problem but it seems (from Google research) that the vet left some ovarian tissue when he speyed Anna, hence she has these pseudo seasons. Good news for Yogi but not so great for my sleep every six months and Yogi and Tommy are grizzling at each other on-stop. For me, this is a small price to pay for giving these dogs a life and even the normally intolerant wife accepts that Anna is a welcome addition to the household and doesn't complain.
One of our three males has been neutered but I have found (with previous dogs as well) that neutering the males really effects their character and weight and I don't do that any more. I haven't really seen any advantage to neutering males in calming them down any, but I know that others have found this to be the case. Our pack lives together quite harmoniously these days and even during Anna's seasons it's no big deal.
Our two small dogs got to squabbling every night. Though small they can still hurt each other and I don't want to spend my pension at the vet's. The fighting has mostly stopped and there is less of a pissing competition around the house. Also we have fewer problems when a neighbourhood bitch comes into season. Their third brother remains intact and when he comes to visit he spends a lot of his time snarling at the other two. The two have put on a little weight, nothing excessive.
I'd say the neutering worked for us although I'd have preferred not to have done it.
I have heard that about neutering males as well Mendy. Have not had a male dog since I was a teenager. I do know though that neutering them stops all that dry humping of yours or your guest legs.
Why I stick with females. In fact considering another dog after New Year. Another Labrador. I means what's one more shit pick up on the way around the place.
Maybe you need to feed them a bit more protein?
Our dogs don't shit around our place, each morning they get let out and they go and patrol their territory which is quite large and they shit over the road from us. That makes it someone else's problem or not.
As for using a Vet the missus has never taken any of our animals to the Vet for any reason they get better and live or they die is her thought.
^ Did she take you to the hospital Ootai or did you get there yourself?
Oh, and Happy New Year, btw!
