Probably be a good idea never to rob a bank with her as your accomplice.

Cops: Did your father do it?
Mini Mendip: No, definitely not and he's not like that!
Cops: There's a packet of Oreo's in it if you tell us what really went down.
Mini Mendip: He did it, I've got video proof on my phone.

The gardener has done a tremendous job feeding my groups of soi dogs while I've been away. My favourite pack are these guys... two males (brothers and Anna'a nephews) and two females. I managed to arrange the speying of the two females a couple of years ago and it's great to see them surviving as a small pack and creating no problems to anyone after so long. Once the females are speyed the problems go away.

This is the fourth member of the pack, a girl named 'Buddy' (by my daughter around 3 years ago). She's friendly and allows you to pet her... I still wish that I'd found a home for her when she was a puppy but you can't win them all. I'd like to bring her in one day. The 3 others in her pack aren't tame enough.

And of course Anna, who this thread was named for, with two miniature pigeons perched on her back.

Vigo disappeared while I was away (he was obviously sick and must have died) and since I've been back Anna stays in the road out back and whimpers every time I go out to see her. When I walk our dogs she joins us and I encourage as much interaction as possible because my plan is to bring Anna in. She deserves it. But I can't risk any fights, particularly with Dan who is 15 and can't handle that kind of stuff any more.

I mentioned to the wife that I was going to bring Anna in at some point but she reckoned we have enough already. I avoided suggesting that swapping one female for another would maintain the status quo... there's no point in antagonising just for the sake of it.

    But it would.

I love her to bits. Anna that is.

Anna had a Moo Palo breakfast this morning.

Letting your wife go stray may be more trouble than it’s worth…

I continue to prepare for Anna's anticipated introduction to our 'inside' dog pack.

She joins us every morning for the dog walks which is good introduction time.

There's no problem on the boys' walk... I reckon that Max, Tommy and Yogi would be more than happy to welcome her into the pack. They may regret that at a later date though as Anna would soon put them in their places. She certainly takes no messing.

The problem will be with the girls. Anna also comes along for the girls' walk but keeps her distance. I think Dan would be OK, mainly because at 15 she's just too old to compete but I don't want to risk her fighting. One fight at her age could be the end. Also I think Anna would be dominant over Maya and definitely Coco, which would upset the pack dynamics. Although it would all depend on how much Anna wants to come 'in'. It never ceases to amaze me how these dogs sort a lot of stuff out by themselves.

I'll continue to go slowly slowly but the wife is away for a few days just now so it's a good time to get this kind of thing sorted... or anything else for that matter. That bloody wah tree will be gone tomorrow!

I take Buno for a walk every morning and I have managed to control his need to attack every dog in our path. In fact he never barks and normally ignores any other dogs unless they come too close to me.

Our soi is about 1km long and rarely are there any dogs but at each end of the soi are packs of dogs.

The only barking and commotion is coming from the female dogs as the male dogs do a runner when they see Bruno.

One of the females has at least started greeting us and I would love to take her in but 2 of my females would never accept her.

I think you blokes are doing a great thing, but I dont see the point. You cannot save every dog, and once you save one another will be born or abandoned in it's place.

^ Yeah, but you could argue why bother doing anything... why try and save the elephant, rhino or pangolin because we know the Chinese will cause them to go extinct in the end.

I'm not expecting to change the world, just give a few dogs a good life. I like dogs and find it very rewarding and to watch Dan have 15 years of good life is a wonderful thing. We could have left her to starve on the street after being hit by a car of course.

If everyone made a small bit of effort, neutering etc, the soi dog problem could be over in a few years. But of course you can't do it single handedly.

I think its quite admirable what Mendy does and agree that if pet owners neutered or spayed their dogs this stray dog issue would fix itself rather fast.

That said, my heartburn with feeding strays outside ones property is it typically draws more dogs and if they are not fixed they produce more litters and more stray dogs. We had this lady at the end of the soi that used to set out plate after plate of rice slop to feed strays. Soon there were 5 or 6 and they had brutal fights over food, shit and pissed all over the place and then came puppies born by the river. A bunch of folks went and told her to knock it off. She did and in 3 weeks all the dogs were gone. The other issues feeding strays is they are feral and can have diseases and attack people and other dogs. I would love to take my dogs out to go have fun by the river, however the random feral dogs that people feed are sickly and are also aggressive. Very hard to fend off feral dogs with your dogs on a leash going crazy.

I took in an animal shelter dog once. A German Shepard of about 2 years old. The problem was you don’t know, and cannot know the animal's history. She was a lovely animal and well behaved but after a year or so I realised she would attack pregnant woman. God knows why. After almost latching onto a pregnant ladies neck (trying to burst through the back door as my parents closed it) I had to make the difficult decision to put her down. Just not worth the trouble nor the randomness. After that experience I decided no strays or shelter animals again. You need to know the dogs history & behaviour.

I agree re what Mendip does but I couldn't do it.

As for fending off the feral dogs I thought you Merkins all carried guns?
Maybe you need to carry a big stick or grow taller!! That would frighten them off.

Do you mean that 'spay one and another in the doggie queue just immediately takes its place' is clearly the reasoning of an abject simpleton?

Well that said ootai, back in the states and living out in the country shooting feral dogs was very common. Over here, I would prefer not to be that foreigner that Thai Netizens go crazy over because I off'd a sick dog that no one would adopt anyway.

I'm surprised at many comments. I know that feeding street dogs can be contentious but I've never had a problem from either the dogs or human residents in the area. I get known by the packs, get the females neutered and find homes for the puppies. I sorted out a pack of 30 dogs within weeks with this approach and despite feeding the dogs throughout I received presents from the local householders for their appreciation. They were worried about the problem, but were unwilling to poison the dogs and just had no idea what to do. OK, it was a lot of work and cost a bit, but I enjoyed doing it and let's face it, WTF else is there to do in Isaan?

When I walk our dogs through the local soi dog packs the 'feral' dogs run up, tails wagging. I have to watch a few obvious clashes with mine on leads but never a problem. We used to have a big bruiser of an alpha male in the area (Yogi's dad who sadly died from Parvo a year ago) and he used to run up and take food from my hand. OK, that took a while for 'Dad Yogi' as my daughter called him to gain trust, but I would urge a different approach. I have yet to find an insidiously 'bad' dog. For me anyway, I find it very rewarding.

my wife has fed the same 5dogs for over 6yrs.and they ONLY trust her, never had a problem with any one of them, the only difficulty she has is,fending off the affection they give her oweing to the amount of parasites that might jump on her for a free ride.she doesnt want to take a chance of getting our beloved MOLLY catching what SAM had pre-2012 untill he passed away 2018 we just cant go through that again,we still grieve for him.how these soi dogs survive is behond me and mrs.hh.

My mom has 2 dogs, raised by her/ us from puppies, and they bring great joy. When I'm at my mom's house, I sometimes feed the dogs from the neighboring lot. Some of the dogs, I've known as puppies so they're friendly with me. I was saddened when I visited one weekend and I found out that sometime during the week, the owner had brought the dogs to another site to guard the place. The owner (a construction engineer) has several construction sites & the workers sleep onsite. I hope the dogs are treated well in their new site.

Thanks BB, and of course the same to you!

It'll be a quiet one here... the Kommandant has gone 'up country' to spend the festive season with the outlaws... a 'different country' would be preferable, to be honest.

The dogs sense a relaxation in regime and tend to sneak in during the evenings to watch the Christmas movie with my daughter and I. If the Obersturmfuhrer ever looks at TD I could be in real trouble when she realises the dogs spend their evenings in a family setting, but let's face it, my timed jacuzzi photo in Bangkok would probably raise more questions.

Incidentally, does anyone know how I can watch 'Jingle All the Way?'... It's my fave but I've never got into the downloading thing. It doesn't seem to be on Netflix.

Tommy may have no tail, he may be as daft as a brush and he may look like a typical soi dog, but he loves to be part of things and even Donald Trump didn't destroy his karma tonight!

    Merry Christmas everyone!

^ and to you mate, Merry Christmas!

But nah, it'll be a big chicken and I'll pretend it's a turkey.

I can't fit a leg of lamb in the convection oven and I always reckon a good chicken with sausages, bacon rolls, tatties etc, is the best roast of the lot.
