We've been inundated by ticks this year and the vet persuaded me to get some Bravecto. This is a chewable tablet that once taken will kill off ticks and fleas when they sip the blood. It was expensive, especially with six dogs, but gives three months protection and is an awful lot easier than injecting the dogs with Ivermec every month.

I did the Ivermec injection for many years but now I buy En-Dex (12000 mcg Ivermectin) on Lazada and give 1 tablet every month to our dogs.
Much cheaper than Bravecto but without liver taste so I have to hide it in their food or just force feed them.
10 tablets for 70 baht , body weight of dog 5-10 kg / 1/2 tablet, body weight 11-20 kg 1 tablet so 3 tablets/month = 21baht

I've found the largest Bravecto tablets (dogs 40 to 60kg) on Lazada for 730 Baht, so with our six dogs' weights at around 15 to 20 kg we'd need two of them every three months, so 1400 Baht odd. Quite a difference.

I was speaking to my mum tonight who's got one of those ridiculous Snakeyes/Dillinger type toy dogs and it costs her 56 quid every three months for the Bravecto tablets for that small thing. She says you need a vet's prescription to buy them in the UK so you can't just buy them online... although she's never actually been online. Next time I visit I'll take her a lifetime supply of the stuff.

It's the daughter's last day of school today before a measly 10 day holiday for Songkran. This week has been wonderful... with the government schools shut my usual 1.5 hour return trip to school has taken around 50 minutes. The roads have been deserted... well relatively at least.

Anyway, I've never accused our dogs of being intelligent... when the daughter stepped outside this morning wearing her ridiculous Songkran shirt they couldn't handle the fact she wasn't in school uniform and started barking and howling.



They do the same to me when I wear my Father Christmas costume... God knows what they'll be like when I start wearing Bogon's leopard print briefs around the garden.

It's been a good morning.

Even Maya's getting her appetite and her mojo back now that she's started on antibiotics for her blood parasite.



While everyone else was playing, as usual I was doing jobs. Every morning I change the cardboard from the puppies cage that has become wet over night. Today there was an unexpected visitor underneath the soiled cardboard, so I stuck it in a bucket.



These things really give me the heebie jeebies...

That's a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie tin for scale... and they are six inches across. A familiar length for some.



I don't like to kill them so these centipedes usually go over the wall into the neighbour's place but I could hear the old woman scrabbling about in her garden so I let it go a long way from our house. It's probably time I ended my 14 year vendetta anyway.



And after all that, Dan made a rare excursion around the garden but was none too pleased to find we have two new puppies. It's great to see Dan back on her feet, even though she is a bit shaky.



The young and the old. I remember reading somewhere that there's a tribe of American Indians who don't believe that you're actually dead while someone living still holds a memory of you in their head. I wonder of that's true in the dog world as well?

They hate injections.

The gf has three yappy little dogs. They wouldn't be my choice but it is what it is. We now keep them inside the fence. The problem is the neighbour's dog who runs in as soon as the gate opens because she knows she'll get bribed with food to go out again. Being boys, our three are all noses up her bottom and she being a tick-ridden, pestilential creature leaves plenty of ticks behind her. We feed her the tick medicine hidden in a plate of food occasionally and it helps a bit. She eats everything at top speed so it is easy to get it into her.

Our dogs however are very, very reluctant to eat any meds. Chewable it might be, chewed it is not. We end up in long standoffs, hands clamped around closed jaws waiting for the meds to be swallowed. Usually the dog wins, outstares us and spits it out immediately after it is released. Being small, they tend to nibble rather than gobble food, so even hiding the meds in liver rarely works.

^ Yeah, that's exactly how I do it... with the added squirt of water from a syringe to help the tablet on it's way.

But with two of our dogs it's impossible to get the tablets in their mouths in the first place. Even when the tablets are hidden in food these two dogs will seem to eat it all down, and then spit out the tablet afterwards.

We use Bravecto as well and our dogs woof them done and we have never seen a tick on them. Once every 3 months is a good program. My wife does the Lazada monthly sale stuff to save more. Like Mendip said but for a bigger dog and then cut them. We did that for our 3 year old lab and our 18 week old puppy.

The Bravecto is pretty much instantaneous and lasts for months.

It tastes good as well, better than a Gregg's sausage roll.

When we first got ours from the dogs home he was covered in fleas, straight to the vets and bought a Bravecto.

Remembering thinking to myself there's no way hes gonna eat that. So I put it in a sausage roll. He sniffed out the Bravecto and left the sausage roll much to my bemusement.

At this point Mendy, when I want to swim laps I have to put Annie in the Kennel as she dive bombs me every lap. Interestingly she seems to bite on my arm to pull me to the ladder like she is saving me.

Being that my wife is freaked out about the current Covid numbers as are many of our friends looks like I will be at our compound by ourselves for most of the Songkran week. Still gonna drink and BBQ, just gonna be us I think.

Maybe teach Annie how to do flips or sit in a float tube and sip a beer..

It's Cooper and Maddy's last day in Korat today. I dream that one day I will say the same.

Gallowspole asked what solid food I've been feeding them on... so that they can have an easy transition at their new home.

We feed all of our dogs on these frozen mince packs they sell at Makro. I think they only cost around 40 Baht and come in all different flavours.



The meat is probably just one or two grades up from what they use in one of Dillinger's Greggs pasties. It cooks up like this...



Cheap chicken cuts and occasional cheap beef on offer at Makro are stewed up and added to the mince.



And Cooper and Maddy get some tinned puppy food as an extra. I think (maybe wrongly) that additional nutrients are added to puppy food that young dogs need.



Our adult dogs get the same with rice mixed in and dry biscuits sprinkled on top. None of our dogs get bones, apart from the very occasional big cow leg bone (although these just cause fights so it's easier not to bother). A vet once told me that the vast majority of dogs he saw were sick due to bone fragments caught in the stomach. Cooked chicken bones are particularly brittle and lethal for dogs.

Two satisfied customers.



And that will be them for a couple of hours at least. We've got a lovely cool, rainy morning in Korat today and I must admit that snuggling down like this for a few hours would be quite OK... although not with my sister because that would just be weird.



But if Gallowspole really wants these puppies to settle in and feel at home I think he should consider a set of elephant table and chairs. Cooper and Maddy have made this area their own and only move to take a wee or poo on the grass. They're semi toilet trained already.



And while I'm on the subject, here's my secret recipe that has helped nurse Dan through a couple of bad episodes and get her interested in food again.

A freshly laid hen's egg is whisked up with milk and microwaved, and along with tinned tuna and milk, added to the food blender.

This is all mixed up until sloppy, and then a spoon or two of rice added, and blended in. Any other tidbits and left overs can be added at will.



It comes out pretty much like a health food shake. I fire this down Dan's throat with a sawn-off syringe, and once she's had a few she's usually ready for a slice or two of ham. Hopefully she'll be back on a normal diet within a few more days.

I've never been a religious person but something happened this Easter.

It's now been a week that I've been making Dan tuna, scrambled egg and milk smoothies and forcing them down her throat with a syringe. She has voluntarily barely eaten a thing since last Monday.

I made an Easter Day roast chicken yesterday, and decided to make Dan a succulent chicken with gravy smoothie.





Dan had to be force fed the chicken smoothie but I noticed her licking up a few spilt drips... the fist time that had happened.

Today, as usual, Dan lay in the gardener's kitchen surrounded by her pack. I really have never seen dog behaviour like this before... they lie like this for most of the day with Dan in the middle.



The two other girls barely leave her side... and Maya has stopped playing and gone off her food.



To be honest Dan is getting much more empathy than I did after my hernia op a couple of years ago. Makes you think. I didn't even get a cup of tea.

I did notice today that Dan got up a couple of times to hobble off to the garden for a wee, and then this afternoon she ate a couple of slices of ham without being forced. She's turned her nose away from food for a week... so much so that if I left a piece of ham by her nose she would get up and move elsewhere.

And then tonight she ate a whole bowl full of pan fried salmon left over from our dinner. There was a shine in her eyes and she lay more upright and comfortably than she had all week.

Dare we hope... and to think I was considering the big trip to the vet last Friday... have to be grateful to the wife for that call.

I think there's life in the old dog yet.

Fingers crossed... it's still a worry but this will be the first good night's sleep I'll have for days.

Before my op I had a really pretty nurse give me a very attentive and close shave downstairs, if you know what I mean. My only pre-op advice would be to sort yourself out before going into the hospital... I thought I was going to have a problem at one point.
