You can't have an 'R' in a dog name in Thailand, it's pointless. She would be 'Leva' to everyone.

Strangely enough an 'L' is difficult enough, as Lola has discovered. Or Rola or Rora, or Lora or my personal favourite 'Laural', as the gardener calls her.

    Cute dog.

Calling it a hound is a bit of a stretch, though.

^wow! You're more than double my weight. I'm 49 to 50 kg & 157 cm (5'2"). But you're tall too, so it just balances out. I imagine you're as tall/ built like Erling Haaland?

Just curious - what's the usual reaction of people when they see you with such a cute & small dog?

Re: the pup's name, my suggestion is Brownie or Mocha. But given the difficulties of Thais to pronounce L or R, then I'm left with the name Mocha. Can also be "Cappy", short for cappuccino.

    ******

P.s. I remember when I was roaming around Chinatown in BKK, I saw a really tall couple. Both the guy & girl were tall. Most of the locals looked at them in awe. I asked them from where they were - ans: Netherlands. I asked him abt his height. He said, "almost 2 meters". His GF was probably 6 ft or more. So far, I think they're the tallest couple that I've seen in person. Cheers!

The Dutch and Danes tend to be tall, above European average. My great Dane, she was 6' 1".

^heh. Did your "great Dane" make a lot of noise?

But yeah, I've read somewhere that on average, the Dutch are among the tallest (if not THE tallest) people. I remember seeing how small the Argentinian football team looked compared to the Dutchies during the recent world cup. There was this tall lanky guy (Van Dyke?) who was heaps taller than Messi. Cheers!

If you remember, Lola's original name was Katie but once we took her in I changed it due to weirdness.

I'm not sure about 'Cappy' but I like 'Mocha', but isn't that green?

PJG again mentioned that 'Deang' needs a new name so I am under pressure.

I like the idea of cider name (apart from Katy) but are there any red ciders without an 'R'? Ideally I'd like a name that reflects here colour, those huge soulful eyes, her bad luck and then good luck, and maybe even her ailments.

I thought of 'Meccano' due to her metal parts, but then that would be abbreviated to Mecca... with the obvious undertones, so maybe not.

I also thought of the famous reds... yes Bristol City, but after all she's been through is it fair to call her 'Lobbin'?

    This ain't easy.

Anyway, I popped in to see her on the way home from school today, and after growling she wagged her tail at me! Progress indeed. Hopefully without sounding too creepy, I must admit that if I spent this amount of money on a human female that I'd never met before I would expect a bit more than a tail wag, but this heartened me. She has eaten and looks stronger, and there's now a glint in her eye... I think she now has hope.

I think that now having her leg back intact must make her feel better. She has the pelvis op scheduled for Thursday, then following a few days in the vet she will be going home. I have a few days deadline to come up with a name.

I inquired about her metal plate and she will have that for life. The vet says that since the plate is in the centre of her femur that the bobe will be free to grow at its ends as she grows up. She will probably have slightly different length legs but the so did our Dan after she was hit by a car as a puppy. Muscles tend to compensate for this and I think she will be fine.

After the vets we arrived home to this...

This must be the fourth or fifth package we have received from NPT... thank you mate, you're too kind!

OK, so it wasn't the wad of cash I was hoping for to cover 'Deang's surgery (and I don't want to get pedantic, but this despite having had two or three name nominations).

But look at this... the daughter got three airline spoons (2x Royal Brunei and 1 x Air Macau - none of which she had), and I got two whopping great bars of Toblerone!

^ooh. That's a different flavour of Toblerone. Haven't seen that ginger orange peel variant before. That's why I thought that the package looked more orange-ish than the cream/ brownish original Toblerone.

Macha green tea is the green coloured drink. The "ch" is pronounced like in "church". Here in PH and in Japan, there's Kitkat in macha green tea flavour (also strawberry flavour in Japan).

A mocha drink has milk, coffee & chocolate/ cocoa so it's brownish. The "ch" is pronounced like a K (mo kah). I think it's an OK name for a brown dog.

Lucky, to have found you. Lucky, simple. My old dogs name. Damn I loved that dog. Off the street in Laksi. First time to the vet they reckoned he was 18 months to two years old. If right he lived to right at 19.

Mocha drinks have been around forever/ since I was a kid. There are paints which come in mocha colour. What's yuppy-ish is "pumpkin spice frappuccino" or "caramel macchiato" (Starbucks coffees).

Btw, I had to Google those drinks since I'm not a Starbucks fan. I saw pics of the Starbucks menu and was surprised at the calorie count for those drinks! The pumpkin spice frapp is 420 cals & the caramel one is 250 cals. No wonder that middle class kids/ yuppies (in PH) these days are getting fatter! For reference, a cup of steamed white rice is ~200 cal.

    ******

"Lucky" is also a good name, I think. The dog is lucky to be alive. But given the Thai pronunciation, she may also be called "Rocky" sometimes.

There's the name...Spoon... a great activity for someone missing a leg and probably what you'll see Yogi doing to it

I thought of 'Lucky' or 'Chok Dee' but just about every dog with a home in Thailand is lucky and it seems a bit of a cop out. But, it goes into the hat.

Some things are better forgotten about. And besides, we are hoping that 'Deang' will end up with the full compliment of legs, unlike Peggy.

Yeah, I was getting mixed up with this Macha drink that the daughter likes. I think it must be a new flavour as I'd never heard of it before.

You can't have 'Spoon' as the Thais can't do an 's' followed by a consonant. She would be 'Sah... Poon'. If you happen to have a mate called Stuart, ask him over one night and smile as your wife calls him 'Sah... Tuart'. If you really want some fun, get your wide to say 'squirrel'. My wife's English is good, but the 'sq' really fukks her up, and then the double 'r'... I still get a lot of amusement out of these things, but then again I'm not spoiled with activities in Isaan.

But anyway, little 'Deang' is Pajama Girl's dog and I very much hope that Yogi will not be 'spooning' her at any point in the future. She will be going to live with Pajama Girl and I am just the secret benefactor. I have to be secret because if the wife found out how much the vet is costing she would go fukkin mental! Not that I'm scared of the wife of course, but why aggravate her unnecessarily?

This will be little 'Deang's family, in due course. Lola's sister, mum and dad were waiting for us outside the back gate at 6:30 am today.

Much to the excitement of my motley pack.

I have a feeling that she may end up staying as 'Deang'. I noticed that on her Xrays, the name entered is 'Moodeng', which seems strange. I always thought that 'moo' is pig, but surely they're not calling her 'Red Pig'?

Mu Dang the red barbecued pork you often find in noodle soups, especially bamee "yellow" noodles soup. Kow mu dang is the red pork over rice with a sweet sauce.

^ I've known several dogs called 'Panda' here, but the name seems to be used for white dogs with brown or black eye patches.

There are red pandas, but I think this could get confusing?

We popped in to see little 'Deang' on the way home from school. She has her second and final op on her pelvis tomorrow so we wanted to give the poor little girl some moral support.

She now wags her tail frantically at us and enjoyed the daughter rubbing her nose with a finger. I think this is quite remarkable considering a week ago she was a feral street dog, half dead at the side of a road after being hit by a car. A little kindness goes a long way.

A few names from the daughter: Maple, Poppy, Penny, Lucy...

I think that 'Moodeng' (Mudeng, Moodeang?) may stick. Despite it meaning red, barbecued pork, it has a nice ring about it!

Meanwhile, I am seriously considering not allowing Lola in the bedroom tonight, despite her being such good company.
