    Mun river raft cruises.

Bit of back ground, have my 2 sisters arriving tomorrow for weeks visit.
So going to do the tour guide thing, local tourist attractions etc.

Want to take them on a rafting trip on the Mun river, never been on one myself, wife looked them up, 2000 Baht for the day, bring your own food and booze, BBQ on the boat.

Problem is location, Thai site says Kong Chiam, but I have never seen any rafts near there. I was of the understanding that they were nearer Phi Bun, of course the Thai site gives no directions or GPS location.

Anyone know where they are located, thanks in advance.

The one in Thai does, but there are a few other river rafting places with no web exposure, these are not Farang tourist places, local use manly.
Second, wife decided that they're in Kong Chiam and that's that.
Plus getting directions from some inbred Thai living in a 10 hut fishing village on the Mun river, would be next to useless.

The map on that Facebook page indicates a position about 10km west of Kong Chiam, at a place called Phibun / Phibun Mangsahan district.

Link looks like Kong Chiam, no mention of river rafting.

As said, not tourist hot spots. just little places along the river that rent rafts and a crew for the day.

It actually says Mun River Cruise, Jim, and there's a picture of boats, but yeah, if you want a wooden raft, perhaps you can build your own.

Ahh, okay. Refuse point blankly to call the Thai number. And people sometimes wonder why they have difficulties getting by here.

So why are you asking on a 'farang' forum, and not getting in touch with locals?

    Oh, right, they're 'inbred'.

    Good luck with it.

I went out on one of those raft trips down Rayong way a few months back. Totally enjoyable but they're not safety friendly regarding children's life jackets. Typical Thai.

    I know that feeling well.

We had agreed to meet one of my wife's friends and visit a Wat near Mukdahan. As usual she wanted to travel at night. I clearly stated prior to leaving home, "We're going to Mukdahan, right?". "Yes" she replied.

Set the GPS and off we go, after an hour she fell a sleep. A couple of hours latter she awakes, hungry and desperate for a pee. We stop eat, pee and off we go again, her sleeping contentedly. The highlight of the drive was watching a very young moon rise from the Issan horizon with three stars in a line being devoured as it rose.

About 7am she awakes. I said to her where are we meeting her friend. She replied, "At her house". I said,"We are at Mukdahan, your friend's house is in Chaiyapum, some 350km away".

It of course was all my fault.

    Did we have a laugh.

Her friend couldn't stop laughing. We stopped off early at a"wonderful" Wat north of Mukdahan and eventually crossed the border bridge into Laos, she'd never been and was so excited, another foreign country! 50bht for her, a re-entry permit 1,000baht plus a 1,800baht visa for me. Some food, a quick tour of the shops where she says, "Everything is so expensive". and back across the bridge. I did have a nice baguette and coffee.

Then the westwards 350km journey to Chaiyaphum to stay at her friends "uncle's" farm. Nice guy, made us very welcome. We did have great few days. But directions, forget it.

Similar story. Set out for Ubon at 5am for BiL wedding. 2 hours into the 4 hour journey I asked the wife what time does the wedding start. She said it's not until tomorrow. So why did we set off at 5 am today? Answer was 'my mother wasn't sure how long it would take to get there'.

Going on Saturday, big family day out, abut 12 people so far.

So wife finally phones up to book in advance, no need says the guy lots of boats, just pick one when you arrive.
Boat supplies ice, charcoal and a BBQ, plus crew, 2,000 Baht for the day, how do we find the place.
Answer, leave Kong Chiam [ where we are staying for 3 nights ] drive toward Phi Bun cross the bridge and turn left 500 meters, simple, np.

Know the road well, has a 5 star resort on it, stayed there a few times when I'm flush and there are no river rafts there.

Wife's on speaker phone, tell the guy, there are no river rafts on that road, confusion is in the air.
Finally after a pause, guess he's thinking about it he comes back with not that bridge, the other one.
Don't know how many bridges there are on the Phi Bun road, but there are a lot, big dam and lots of small rivers flowing into it.

Back and forward it goes for a bit, turns out boats are not on the Mun river at all, they are on a smaller river system that flows into the mun river.

Now armed with the river name, get on Google maps, a good 40, 50 Km out of kong Chiam on the far side of the dam.

I must admit the madness of it all entertains me. Never a dull moment. One never know what the next sunrise will bring along, once the early morning mist is whisked away.

My straight-jacket disappeared the moment stepped onto the platform at a small Sussex station one bright but cold winters afternoon. Dressed in my overcoat with two suitcases and a rucksack. Some of my children's school friends were also waiting for the train into the local town.

They asked. "Where are you going?", I replied, "Thailand". They said, "Enjoy your holiday, see you when you get back". I thought that may never happen. Then as I checked-in at the airport, whereupon the agent queried that I had a one way ticket to Bangkok. "Yes," I replied, "I'm not returning."

    Another adventure had started.

Do you phone your children every now and again, or that was that? Did they even know that you were leaving them forever?

^They were very supportive of the idea prior to my move and understood the reasons. I had visited, lived and worked in a few countries which they were aware of. Of course I miss many of the family meetings, memories of which in my own childhood are part and parcel of me, but they are all adults and had/have busy lives.

I have been back and seen them probably once, maybe twice a year, since. Christmas parties, funerals, weddings etc. Some of them have visited Thailand on holiday when we, my Thai wife and I, have gone and stayed a few days at their holiday destination. My 20+ year old daughter turned up one day in Thailand stayed a month or two and would have stayed longer but her demands were becoming unrealistic and over the top. She was eventually persuaded, by me, to walk up the stairs to immigration at Suvarnabhumi and was met by her mum at Heathrow. She now has settled down, somewhat, has a good career and new friends. We Skype regularly and she is planning, another hopefully short "holiday" this autumn. One never knows what will transpire with women, English or Thai.

One of my nephews and friends are touring Vietnam, Laos and Thailand currently and is planning to drop bye this month. His dad has told him to ask for help, if required.

My three boys are also well into their careers and relationships. One has two kids and a wife who was brought up in Thailand as a child. Her father was an oil company executive, I've been told.

One married an american girl in the UK last year, has since taken out US citizenship. He is in the oil business and is able to find employment worldwide. I'm off to Dallas in a month, where her parents, who went to the UK for the wedding, are having a ceremony to celebrate their marriage and bring more of the families together/meet each other. I shall restrain my discussions on world affairs!

The third has a girlfriend and enjoys himself.

Probably not the relationship I would have had if I had remained in the UK, but it is what it is.

I will meet again my ex-wife, whose dream of finding an "improved version of me", have not been the success she hoped for. Maybe in Dallas we will go off one evening for a curry, that used to lead to consensual pleasure previously, when going out together, being married or after our divorce. Who knows, a Texas tryst, just to show her she is still desirable of course!

Probably more than you wanted eh?

So you're gonna try and fuck your ex wife while your current wife stays in Thailand? Seems like a good way to get two ex-wives.

Obviously no.1 is wireless fibre internet and 2, tiled floors. We have a spare bedroom, a working kitchen, electric hot shower and a washing machine. Plenty of kids in the street to entertain/teach her rural life. What more does she want?

We also have a medical clinic, cuts and bruises, in the village and local hospital, half an hours drive away. That is more of a triage station, anything more it's either government hospitals in Trat or Chanthaburi. Both also have Bangkok hospitals for the "upper classes".

Seriously, if you need a minder at any time we will be happy to assist. If you want us to travel, clean sheets, a daily food allowance and a camera free bedroom, would be mandatory.
