    Nakhon phnom pub/ restaurant suggestion

I find myself in nakhon phanom for a night. Anyone got any suggestions on where to eat/ drink. I've been on a roadie through Lao and arrived in Thakek about lunchtime. Thakeks boring as fuck so talked she who must be obeyed into crossing the river. Staying in a nice gaff here called fortune river view. Big pool for the nippers but im hankering for some half decent grub and a few bevvys

No? Oh alright then . I didn't think it would be an easy ask. Googled the fook out of it but not much came up apart from the river promenade area. Guess I will just go a trail blazing and see what happens. It acting strikes me as quite a nice little place on first impressions . Tomorrow will follow the Mekong towards nongkhai before heading back into beerlaoland

Sorry about missing you on your way out, but I've only just got in from work, so there wasn't enough time to reply.

Good luck. Been up there a couple times. Pretty grim pickings. Have she who must be obeyed ask around is what I would do. If your Lao is decent you will have a good time.

It turns out that the river promenade gets turned into a walking street of an evening. Some good little bars. Very thai style and reminded me of Chiang Khan. Plenty of eye candy about and decent food to be had. There's a hint of some kind of nightlife to be had if you've got an inclination to let the ferret out for a run. Unfortunately I started on the bevvys about 3 o clock hence im back in my room at 10.30 must be getting old?. Good result all up. Pretty impressed with this place. Post oop a thread when I can

I was there last month. Fortune River View? Are you sure?

I had a horrific time in this almost empty place

This place has decent bands and food, in the shadow of the clock tower. The singer is lovely and very talented.

IT rained that night, hence the covering. Immigration did a spot check for some reason at 11pm. First ever time I've ever been asked for my passport.

WEnt on to here to 2.30am, Club 21 I think, but a bit too loud, great rock band followed by a techno DJ

There are 2 fortune river views pat. The one im in is 2000 baht a night. It's your typical thai style mid range hotel with a bottle opener attached to the sink. We were also in that pub with the band. And also got a picture with the giant chickens on the riverside

They have made good use of the riverside for an entertainment area. It's a pity the Lao over the river in Thakek don't do something similar with there waterfront.

I rather like Mukdahan Dill, all those river side towns are what ya make of them.

Fantastic drive following the Mekong up that area.

    Great drive that one, enjoy.

The drive on the other side of nongkhai is a beauty.

The Mekong river run is a dam beautiful stretch of the world. Ya need wheels and time to cover it all, a nice easy drive stopping overnight in the small towns.

If I did not love the big city this is where I would live.

Well I know that now. The run down one was 940 a night. I booked online then googled pictures. The pics I got excited at were o the Fortune you stayed at. Not the shithole I arrived at. Mine did have a brilliant river view. But haven't they all.

A month later stayed at this far superior place was exactly 500 a night. Again there's a similarly named inferior place not far away. The trick is to not bother with booking/agoda et al and let a Thai find a hotel. This was 300m from the clock tower.

In Issan 500 baht should fetch a decent room with a little bit of legging around. But yeah pointless to book in advance unless the place has a good deal of reviews backing it up. I get the name thing though, sucks when that happens

We ended up on route 212 headed for nong khaki didn't see any river but stopped at a waterfall called tum that or something like that. Very thai scene on a Sunday and nice enough. Next was a visit to an amazing mountain top temple called phu tock. Quite spectacular it was. Parked up for the night now in bueng kan it's opposite paksan. Couldn't be arsed to drive anymore . Swirling some Leo's in the room before heading out to see what's to eat.

I will bung up a thread when I get home next week sometime. The trip started in vientiane then paksan then on to konglor cave ( impressive) a brief stop in Thakek and over the bridge to nakhon phanom. Got plenty of pics

If you're still in the Nakhon Phanom area, wat That Phanom is worth a look. Especially as it gets dark. Its pretty amazing, its a big spire that sort of towers over the city and is one of my favorite landmarks in Thailand. Apparently the Buddha's clavicle bone or some shit is buried under the Stupa there. Thousands of Thais make a pilgrimage there each year.

Some nice food and drink along the riverfront to be had in the small village there as well. The town used to be very nice actually, but the last time I visited it had really turned to shit for some reason. The temple and a drive around at night past dark to take in the whole view makes it still worth seeing though

You are 100% correct. Me and the kids waited in the car while she climbed it. She was gone a while and I was starting to worry as the beers were running out . She made it to the top and scared herself silly. Sillier. She did get some great pics though

Bung kan is your typical thai river town. Found a good bar resto walking distance from the gaff. Good food and a decent thai band. And for more entertainment a Kraut with his mum and his ladyboy girlfriend showed up and pretty soon the fruity coonts were having a massive ding dong with the girlyman shrieking theatrically in that god awful baritone voice they all seem to have . Funny as fook it was. Bet his mums proud eh
