Hello Kevin, Sawang Daen Din is a good choice! We have just bought a couple of acres on the outskirts of Sawang opposite the golf driving range, near the small new resort. We are getting a house built and will spend part of the year there, and probably part in Australia.
I actually have a tiny bit of Irish Blood from a great great grandfather who came out to Australia in about 1850 (at first I thought he was a convict, .....but can't find any records so maybe he was just a poor Irish potato farmer!)
My wife and son's family originally came from Sawang Daen Din.
Sawang is a bit overlooked,as I think it has a lot going for it, and although we have been coming here for a few years, we were amazed to find a long established excellent resort and restaurant just out of town. (that most of the locals didn't seem to know about!) The new adventure resort is getting near finished about 8km out to the North East and I hope to keep my Airplane at their Airfield, which they are presently extending. We were there a couple of weeks ago but presently back in Australia. Hope to meet up with you for a coffee at Tesco. Where is the Big C going to be built?

    Never found that "chill-out"bar
Found outside bar right turn second traffic light coming from Udon (same direction to that beautifull resort outside town (Chantapaya???) first left, bar under trees, nice music but only beers. The man is not equipped to make cocktails, unfortunately I need to head to Udon to find any cocktails.

Does any one know an other decent restaurant in Sawan Daen Din?
Where they have good curries? Red, masaman, panaeng, tom yam, kaeng Chud, tom kha kai?

Sawang Daen Din has a few other restuarants, two of which I can recommend, and at least another two seem well patronised, one I think might feature Indian food, but can't vouch for it). The two I have not tried are about 3 streets North of the main road more or less in the middle of town, one near the "lands Titles office" and the other one further west near the Ban Muang road. They are a bit hard to find but seem to get plenty of business.
The outstanding restuarant is next to, and part of the really nice resort a couple of Kilometres South of Town. This restuarant I rate as "spectacular" and both my wife and I were quite amazed to find it and asuch a nice Teak Ressort in Sawang Daen Din when we went there a couple of weeks ago.
It has a beautiful established "French style" tropical garden, full of orchids. There are pathways through the gardens to several individual large teak gazeebo's open at the sides, and each one seating a dozen or so in very pleasant surroundings, at a circular central table, and each one with it's own waitress. The service is excellent, and they have an extensive menu. We drank only beer and spirits, but I would be surprised if they don't do "Cocktails". They also cater for families with kids as they have a really nice wooden childrens playground right in the middle as part of the garden complex. It features a large wooden slide, and "Tarzan" style tree house. Some of the two story Teak accomodation units also have "Tarzan" playrooms separate from the unit with kids furniture and stuff inside!
There is also an Airconditioned restaurant area, plus several "glassed in" airconditioned individual gazeebo's fitted out with large plasma Karioke systems and serious sound. There was a big variety of music of all sorts emitting from them, depending on the group inside.....and boy! they all seemed to be having a great time. I suspect though that it caters for groups of people, and many are possibly "booked" for private functions, and you would need to watch your step if uninvited, as there seemed to be plenty of grog filled young Thai revellers. I will report further when I return! Because we had not seen the resort South of town, we have been staying at the new resort about 500 metres, North of the main road on the Sakon Nakon side of town, and these rooms are quite good also, although we thought the bathroom could have had a bit better "clean up" but hot shower, Western toilet, Plasma TV, and fast wi-fi available, and a nice outdoor restuarant by a small lake, with a live band (I think every night) good food and beer and spirits (possibly cocktails also but can't guarantee) and a free condom supplied with the tea and coffee in the room....they just think of everything!
I will attempt to add some photographs (taken at night by our ten year old, budding photographer) of the French gardens and fountain, if I can work out how to post.

Sawan Daen Din is where our local dog collector takes his booty after exchanging a cane basket for each flea bitten mut.

    Talking big c

Hi Roger R, we eat/drink at Chomdao resort quite often, i guess your house is located alongside the resort ? Wine is expensive in both resorts, 800bht in Chomdao and 400bht in Chuan, but 270bht in Tesco and both resorts have no problem corking. Big C put on hold due to opposition from small shopowners in SDD. Shops in SDD went on "strike" when Tesco announced they were opening in town......

    Hi all,

I am a 28 year old Australian female, married to a Thai guy whose family is in Sawaang Daen Din. Their house is just behind the Tesco-Lotus.

We will be visiting in November / December this year and I wouldn't mind catching up with the other local expats, if any of you guys are interested.

Also, I want to hook them up with an internet connection at the house. I'm told that landlines are impossible to get, and the best way to go is satelite. If any of you have any experience with this and can give advice on how best to proceed this would be really helpful.

    Thanks in advance.

If your staying behind Tesco, TOT runs out that way.

Stumps bar, (Real name "Porn's Coffee shop") is a great place to have a beer, the german place has a new german as kevin said above I think.

The disco is great, as usual.

don't come here often, but on a Wednesday just before and after lunch a few farangs gather for a tall beer at Tesco food court, people always welcome. I'll be there tomorrow.

Ask for John, 3 of them go there.

How much have things changed? It has been a year-plus since the missus and I have been back, so I imagine there are changes in Sawang.
