    Internet in rural Isaan

I live some 50 km north of Korat just off the Mitraparp and just outside the 3BB Phi Mai footprint. At present I use an AIS Aircard at 100 Baht for 30 hours, which works but is pathetically slow. I have read the thread from earlier in the year to do with the True installation of an antenna to boost their aircard, but as it slows to 'normal' after only 7 Mb download and costs 12,500 Baht, it doesn't seem worth it. There have to be other options, but so far I haven't been able to find them. Grateful for any advice.

If you can't get a landline you have two options.
Satellite on ipstar, expensive and fairly slow. Tot is a reseller.
Both tot and cat have a short range wide area wifi service, one tower can handle about 20 connections. You could ask if you are in,a service area. Tot call it WiNet.
If you aren't Ina service area but can gather 10 or so customers they may install a,tower.

I'm living 30km's north of Surin city, in a small village. We've got TOT here, 590B per month I think. It's usually okay, I can download @ 1mB/s so I've got enough movies to watch hehe.

Normally my ping is 280-300 to Singapore, today 600

    Ubiquiti Networks, Inc.

    Check this out.

A friend that lives in an area with high speed DSL wants to put up a decent sized tower and he can beam his high speed to me and a couple of other friends about 10 km's away. Just need a sending unit and recieving unit. Not too expensive and I heard a guy in the mall Korat sells the equipment.

Something to look into if you got a lot of Expats living around you could split the costs and set up you own wifi hot spot. My friend does this in rural Texas sends a high speed signal from the nearest town.
I'm not saying it was Aliens, but it was Aliens!

An age old quest for many of us residing in the sticks.
Norton and Boloa have both emailed me with outstanding suggestions...

Personally, first and foremost, one has to get away from the system of aircard connections.

If you can secure a telephone/land line connection in your moo baan * router to a wireless wifi from that line.

Some have suggested a wifi nanostation, as well.

OP, it might be worth your while to browse the computer sub-forum in TD. Might be useful.

Thanks to all for the responses. I posted the same question in the Isaan Forum of ThaiVisa.com and if any of you are in the same boat as me it might be worth your while to have a look at the replies - some of which say the same thing as some of you guys. It's clear that there is no single solution and much depends on what use you want to make of access to the internet - e-mails and newspapers or films, music and the whole 3G shebang. I agree that aircards are probably not the answer, but depending on your location TOT, CAT and even the mis-named True may be able to provide one's solution.
