No farang problems out my way, was the first farang out here 10 or so years ago and am still the only farang. Nearest neigbhor 7 odd km away on the main road.
Have to say one English speaking, beer drinking farang in the village would be ok, get sick of talking to the dog and the dog never pays for the beer. Jim

It takes roughly eight hours, on the bus, to get from one side of Isaan to the other. A bit faster in a Rolls Royce. Us locals prefer to do it in a buffalo cart though, which takes a lifetime.

Du they still tell the fairy tale of "you are the first foreigner here"? Foreigners have been everywhere in Isaan in the 70s when Udon Thani Airport was used by the US as an air base.

The first foreigner around here was an afromerkin dude, deserter. I'm quite friendly with the old gal that shacked up with him (of course she was young then). No one seems to know what happened to him. The second was a Norwegian, who had a bit of a thriving business renting out carts to the villagers, mainly to transport their water from the well to the ban. He lives in Ubon muang now.

Live here, no farangs, was a helocopter landing pad near Buntharik during the Vietnam war, buts that's 27 km away. Have a few visitors come to visit me for a few days. Once in a blue moon a farang will come up with his Thai wife, G/F, but they usually get back in the car and head for Ubon before the night falls.
Dead end road into the jungle, no where to go and nothing to do. Also very few girls go south to work the bars, not a done thing out this way. Jim

The quality of life for foreigners in Isaan has little to do with Isaan. It's all do with the attitude of the foreigner.

Fully support the thrust of this message... Isaan is not typical Falang territory. Those of us who live here appreciate it for what it is, not what we want to make it to be...

One could debate the first and principle base of operations for the likes of AA, Ravens, etc.....Udon was important, yes.
NKP was even more valuable and stationed much more of these "covert" types.

Not to forget that 'secret' base north of Vientiane where the Ravens flew missions from. Not far from the Plain of Jars.

Well Udon Thani is nothing but a cespool. Why anyone wants to live in this sh*thole is beyond me. As soon as I can I am out of here and near the beach on the west coast

What exactly is the difference between Udon Thani and for example Bangkok? I dislike Bangkok most of all Thai cities... Don't understand me wrong, I like the village life more than big cities but I can't see any difference.

Bangkok has a lot more to offer then Udon Thani. Resturants, english sound track movies, theaters, concerts, schools, farlang food, the list is endless.

The yanks weren't the first here, Brits were in Country straight after the war. Old man was in a fire fight in the plain of jars. Recovering French territory. Jim

I guess it's just a matter of taste, I can understand one wants to have foreign food, schools and concerts.

I myself like Thai food more than European food, if I want to eat European food I better cook it myself. Movies I just download for free, I don't like theaters and don't have children so schools aren't important.
