Is this place worth a visit for the dinosaur museum or is it lame?
Also do you think Khon Kaen is worth driving to for 1 night or 2 as part of a trip to Loei from Udon with KK as a southern detour.

I actually taught a Thai kid who thought that dinosaurs still existed.
What's good to visit near Khon Kaen? Dazed and confused looking at the map.
Khon Kaen is refreshing after grubby BKK or panting Pattaya. It is moderately sized, pleasantly clean regional city. There is a famous 9 Story Pagoda, which I climbed up for a view of the city. Quite spectacular; however, I slipped on the way down, on rain soaked, super steep stairway, spraining my finger. Ladies must wear traditional dresses & long sleeved blouses. There is a decent museum, some great restaurants around the large lake and 2 good golf courses(Singha & Dan Koon GC's); which have sport day 1/2 price fees on Mondays & Tuesdays. Quite nice courses. Daen Koon a bit difficult to find the turn off the main Hwy. There is another Golf Course left off Hwy 2, heading to Udon Thani. These Golf courses are much better than the GC's around Udon. I golfed them all many times. I like KK more than Udon, which is crowded and dirty.
Big one on Mitraparp Rd coming to KK from the north, so I guess the kid was rightOriginally Posted by can123
Never stopped and checked if it had a pulse though
i,m rather fond of the PULLMAN hotel and its micro brewery... yummy beer, tucker is good too
The resivour known as Pattaya 2 is in Phu Wiang. Nice to have a beer and food on the banks, or a swim, the waters clean and blue. Not been to the dinosaur museum, but the area has seized on the tourism opportunities of a singular dinosaur bone found a few years ago (apparently). My TGF said no go, too boring, but I might check it out next time if you post a picture thread.
Apparently they found a couple of T-rex bones but if it's not a complete skeleton then yes it might be boring I guess.
I like the sound of the micro brewery and I hated Pattaya so KK sounds alright.
I've been to the museum couple of times. Would rank it just ok. Kids love it.
Khonkean has nothing much to see. A smaller but less interesting place than Udon.
I would pass on Khonkean and go to Petchabun then north to Loei. Stay in Khao Kho. Beautiful area. Lot's of mountain resorts. A bit further than going Udon to Khonkean then Loei but not much.

Norton,
Have you been to Chaiyaphum?
Never been to the dinosaur museum, so I cant tell you whats it like.
There is a nice temple just outside khon kaen, with many statues, they have a big white Buddha, there is a big lake where you can feed the big cat fish, there are many things to do and see in and around KK, shopping, restaurants. etc
well worth a 2 stay
I started of in life with fcuk all, and I still got most of it left !!
Yeah right. Khon Kaen a destination you can’t miss.

Nice scenery there
There is a complete skeleton of a Phu Wiang a sourus. Got a t-shirt there from the gift shop. Interesting enough. Man at the pay window spoke English. Told me I get a special deal and I replied I had one for him, too. Jokingly, of course. There are several places to go along the way to the actual museum that are Dino related. Gotta wonder if that is where Fred Flintstone came from?
Then there are the dams. Not just Pattaya II but Obolatan as well. Obolatan has a nice restaurant over looking the back waters. And, go feed the fish down at the boat ramp. Nice park. You can walk across the dam.
There are other things to do as well. In-laws do the driving and I do the pics. Been so many places, they do tend to over-lap at times. In all, a nice way to spend an afternoon. IMO.
I thought the dinosaur museum was quite good, been a couple of times now, it isn't particularly well sign-posted though so take a decent road map.
