I'm going on a quick visa run to Laos later today but I'm gonna fly to Udon and stay there for a night on the way. Any hotel recommendations? And where's good for a few beers?
I'm meeting Pickle in Vientiane if he remembers.

It depends on what your comfortable paying FP ,many decent hotels to be had there , if you want to be near the cowshed and nutty park for beers and womanizing, then at the low end of the scale you could try top mansion about 500 baht a night or there is a new one just next to the cowshed called pannarai, has a pool and decent breakfast and will run you about 1300 baht, a bit further away but getting on a bit is the Charoen hotel, pool no brekkie and about the same price as pannarai, Paradise on the other side of posri road and down a small soi has also a pool and isnt bad either. For heavy drinking and banter stop in at the sport bar and say hello to steve, (same soi as pannarai and the cowshed) i go to udon a fair bit but find sundays are a bit dull, but you could be surprised.
Cheers. I don't mind about 1000bt a night. I've gotta be at the embassy early so will probably miss breakfast and no need for a pool.
Centara Hotel, which adjoins the Central Plaza Mall, starts at 1120 baht on Agoda. Within walking distance of the main falang bar areas, Soi Sampan and Nutty Park. My favorite bar is Chris's Place (good food), but that is a 10 minute taxi ride.
Been there 2 or 3 times. Typical Isaan city, Rubbish

The cowshed is a nickname for Udon Day and Night, Soi Sampan, which is a covered beer bar complex. Nutty Park is the name of a farang bar area on Prajak Road close to Soi Sampan. Look on the Udonmap website for a map and more info.
The Irish Clock is a nice pub on Soi Sampan near Udon Day and Night.
I didn't forget Princey. I get into Udon about 6:30 pm so will probably spend a night there first then go to Laos on Tues.
What's the name of that hotel next to the cowshed? I stayed there before and it was a good deal at 300 baht. Was it Top?
Its Pickel not Pickle, Alby.
