Where are you going to live? Get the GF to find out the nearest one that has the best service and smallest queues..Other than that I don't see much difference really.

Hi Peter, the Bangkok bank is O.K. (politics notwithstanding ) but their ATM machines seem to break down more often than other banks which can be annoying when you want to get your money out. Also, at the end of the month when Thais get paid, there is always a long queue at their machines as Thais try to work out how to send money to their relatives up country.

I'm with the Bangkok Bank myself and can't be bothered to change but if I was opening my first account I would try somewhere else like the Siam Commercial or Bank of Ayuddaya or Kasigorn

    See what other posters say.

    I'm surprised at that.

I think it depends a lot on your local branch manager.

A bit like the yellow book fiasco.

my mate swears by SCM. particularly their debit card - good for internal flight bookings, apparently.

personally, we use the local agricultural bank, but then again we haven't got any money........

Maybe downtown but locally I found out that some places will er bend the rules if you turn up on their doorstep with a shitload of money looking for a home. I went to our local bank of Ayuddaya 8 months ago with nothing but my passport and the promise of a 1.1 million deposit. After a brief huddle in the corner with the manager the lovely teller came back to me and said :

" Show us the beans and we'll give you a tin to put them in "

    Or words to that effect.

Kasikorn (Thai Farmers) are good. I have had several accounts ( don't ask) with Thai Farmers before they became Kasikorn. A few years ago when I was "between marriages" I had to get a retirement visa. I opened an account with Kasikorn on Beach road, Pattaya..transferred my money in from Surin and they wrote a letter confirming that my money had been in their branch 3 Months..

^ sweet but they charge for the transfer don't they?

It really pissed me off. I had an account in Ban Chang, Rayong. Had a bit of cash in it.

We moved up north near Chiang Kong.

Went to the local branch and explained that I wanted to transfer accounts, money , arrangements etc.

"No worries" says he, 3 % on everything !

Well fuck off, says I. It's the same bank credit account. No way.

    One was miffed.

    Good luck.

I've opened about 30 accounts since I came to Thailand.
One bank is no better than another, what does vary is the quality of the staff at each single branch.
Don't leave Kiatnakin Bank off your list.

This is turning into a bit of a 'Funny Bank sketch" Peter sorry but:

After contracting in PRC for a few years I had a wad of 100,000 quid in Barclays and about 5,000 quid in Lloyds and wanted to amalgamate my finances...So I went into Barclays in my local town in England and asked if they could rearrange my DDs and SOs if I transferred my 5,000 quid in from Lloyds. NO was the reply. So I went next door to Lloyds and asked... transfer in..100,000 quid ..DDs..SOs..blah blah blah..YES was the unsurprising answer....

One other bit of advice Peter. Wherever you open your account, make sure to get a Be 1st ATM card or its equivelent. This will enable you to withdraw your cash from any bank anywhere in thailand. If you only have an ' in house ' ATM card you will only be able to use that banks ATM machines. This can be very inconvenient if your regular banks machine is broken and the next nearest machine is a couple of kilometres away.

    Or an International Visa Debit.

I have used Kasikorn for about 10 years and am very happy with them. I thought SCB & Bangkok Bank were not as good.

Kasikorn on the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 33 have never given me a problem opening an account with just a passport (but they may well have changed tact in recent years).
