    Newbies from St. Louis, MO

    Hello fellow TD's.
My husband "Menko" signed me up on this site a few days ago, reiterating to me that this is a pretty cool site with lots of interesting people and lots of viable on-line tools, which appear to be quite useful especially while residing or visiting Thailand.
My husband of 43 years is a native born German, who immigrated to the United States in 1963, and who served 20 years in the United States Air Force. He served three combat tours in SEA during the Vietnam war, but was lucky enough to escape unscathed.
I was born in Na Noi, Thailand, way up north in Nan province, and married my husband in 1968, while he was stationed at Bitburg Air Base Germany. Both of us are naturalized US citizens, and both of us are fully retired. During my husband's USAF career we lived on three different continents, and we pretty much traveled the whole world. But now, as we grow older we developed a yearning for wanting to re-visit Thailand more-and-more again, and at the same time escape the colder winter periods here in Missouri - where we currently reside.
In closing, we look forward being part of the TD community, and hope no one minds when from time to time we have to ask a perhaps "silly sounding" question. After all we are not the youngest anymore, but hope to be around a bit longer.
    Cheers,
    Menko & Amina Christoph

    Nan Provincial Roads 1216 - 1217 - 1028

    Fresh Prince:
It's been about 20 months since we were in Thailand the last time. We plan another 60-day visit this December through January 2012.
If at all possible, we want to fly straight into Chiang Mai via Seoul this time - bypassing BKK altogether. We then want to rent a vehicle, and do some extensive northern exploration and trekking - visiting my family in Na Noi, Nan, Phayao, and Chiang Rai, plus checking out some of the surrounding areas we are not so familiar with, or have not been to ever!
However, I'd be interested to know if anyone in our group has ever used the Northern Provincial Roads 1217, to 1216 (past Khun Sathan NP), and then 1028 - between Rong Kwan and Na Noi?
Instead of going around the long way through Wiang Sa via Route 1026, and then south to Na Noi. Most of my family and friends tell me these roads are too bad, mountainous, and it requires 4X4 truck capability. Just wondering if this is actually true or only Thai hearsay? As all of you know, sometimes these local rumors are hard to squelch or to eradicate.
Thanks for anyone's input, and at the same time Cheers,
    Amina

    Blue,
I actually met my husband in 1966 in BKK, while he was helping out with the Presidential Detail for President Lyndon Johnson's visit. Then in 1967 my husband was reassigned from Takhli RTAFB, south of Nakhon Sawan in Thailand, to Bitburg Air Base in Germany. I followed him to Germany in December 1967, and we got married in April 1968. Talk about some real culture shock and some totally unfamiliar temperatures - I experienced it first hand, and I can say: "Been There - Done That."
    Cheers - Amina

Thank you Khmen for your kind welcome wishes. I just hope I don't get too long winded, and bore people to death.

BTW Blue - I entered the Photo Gallery today and saw some pretty nice photos. But also some what I would classify simply as raw and tasteless
"pornography." - NOT SO NICE! - That was disappointing and a rude awakening!

Amina, in life you must take the good with the bad and I can assure you there are plenty of pluses on this forum that very much outweigh the negatives.

Welcome to Teakdoor and we look forward to your contributions.

We've got plenty of those types on here already, and they are far less interesting and have much less to talk about than yourself.
You both sound like a valuable addition to the forum.
We have travel sections for different parts of the world and I'm sure we'd all appreciate any photo threads and anecdotes you could upload of your travels.
It's quite time consuming, but very worthwhile, and really adds to the quality of the forum.

Here are a collection of some of the best photo threads from South East Asia and Thailand, with the links it's a good way to find your way around the forum and perhaps discover some places you never knew about.

Welcome Amina. Sounds like you two have a nice trip planned.

I open the gallery sometimes, too, and see some fairly nasty stuff. It isn't there all of the time, only occasionally does it pop up.

And that's ok with me, but I just wonder who posted and exactly what the heck they are doing in some of those photos!

    Blue,
No apology needed on your behalf. But I really appreciate you sharing the link with the 1960s pictures. Thank You. It sure brought back a lot of memories for me and my husband. One can say it was a different Thailand for sure. I remember a red 100 Baht note was the biggest denomination then, and one could buy quite a lot of goods. And I recall the one Baht paper note, used primarily for the Samlors, along with the small Satang coins. Wow - time flies and so many things have changed - unforunately, not always for the better. - Cheers,
    Amina

    Loy Toy,
I fully agree with your assessment and outlook on life. It takes all sorts of people to make this world go around. And you are correct, we believe the good will outweigh the bad.
BTW - When I learn to how to post pictures (I'm still reading the how to) I'll share some of our stories/photos from our travels.
