    G'day, Greg from Ayong here

    G'day people,
Greg from Ayong here. Have been a member for a while and enjoyed the banter and benefited from the advice.
I find it much more enjoyable here than the other big Expat site.
Will be starting our house build soon, so will be putting a thread up to that effect shortly.
Looking forward to receiving comments, advice, tips and any information on building a house in Thailand

    G'day Edmond,
You're right - there are acres of rice paddies around at the moment. A sea of emerald green.
Will post some pics of the surrounding area once I get the hang of uploading to the forum.
Not sure if TD have given clearance to post hyperlinks yet so let's see if this works:
It shows the land we'll be building on and Ayong village

    G'day Dave,
Appreciate your advice - thanks for commenting. House will be constructed from Q Con blocks. Double on external walls 60 X 7.5 X 20.

That is indeed a very good chunk of land. Try to keep those mature trees if you can. Good luck with your build.

I agree with Shutree on keeping as many mature trees as possible.

What is vehicle access like, for construction traffic and living there after the build?

    Good luck with it.

Thanks Shutree appreciate your comments. All trees will be staying except a couple of Mango trees where termites are winning the battle.
There will be many more once we get the house built - plan to have mahogany, teak etc along with other tropical hardwoods.

Thanks Switch. Access is good - a five metre wide gate that's already seen over 180 loads of infill soil to get the levels right. We're still deciding on whether this will be the permanent access, or whether we add another gate just for the house. One of many decisions still to be made.

Yes Mike, you're dead right. The chanting will give the roosters and dogs some competition. Hopefully it will block out the early morning village PA messages and funeral catering team music.

Good Luck with the house build project. Lots of knowledgeable folks on here who have "been there and done that" as they say.

I bought a couple of baby teak trees, they were 5 Baht each at the market. Once they take off they grow tall very quickly, about 2 or 3 metres per year in their early years. The neigbours tutted a bit, they said that teak trees are fine in a forest but vulnerable to being blown over if planted individually. If I had a plot the size of yours then I'd be tempted to plant maybe 20 together. Locally, commercially, they plant at about 3 metre spacing. so 20 trees in a grid would only cover about 10x12m.

A couple of other things: once those big leaves start falling it gets tiresome picking them up so I would plant them where I didn't worry about the ground being covered with them. The frogs and toads and lizards like them for cover and they get the snakes interested, so I clear up the leaves close to the house.

I planted the teak trees away from where I planned the house, then I changed my plan and built the house close to where the teak trees were already growing. This might be unwise because teak trees have rather shallow but very broad root systems. So far it is not a problem. I suspect that when I am gone then the gf will make sure that the teak trees are close behind me.

I haven't thought about mahogany, I haven't noticed them for sale although I haven't particularly looked.

Thailand is losing many of its native Dipterocarpus trees. I have tried several times to grow these from the seeds of at least three different species here, collected off the ground when I saw them, and all have failed. This is still on my to-do list.

We've got a ready source of tropical trees here in the village. Yuri's good friend has a small nursery just down the road. Incredible value. We'll be his best customer given the plans we have for a food forest. Thanks for the tip on teak tree spacing. I spend a fair bit of time cycling around the district and don't see many close plantings of teak. Sadly they have been thinned out well before the preservation rule was introduced. Just recently the Orbotor ripped out over twenty mature trees along our Eastern border to put a proper road around the reservoir. It was totally unnecessary. Guess where the teak and mahogany will be planed first.
