    A long time lurker...

    Hi,

After several years of reading Teakdoor, a thread about dogs today finally motivated me to join. I'm a hopeless dog lover.

For my sins I've spent the last 13 years in Korat, working regular rotations offshore to keep sane. When I'm home my young daughter, dogs and chickens, oh, and the wife, keep me busy and out of trouble.

Over the past few years I've started doing a lot with the local street dogs. It started out of boredom living in Korat but has now become obsessive - but I need to keep doing stuff. Over the past year or so I've now found homes for around 40 puppies from six litters, and then have had the mothers speyed (if I can catch them). All of these are within a kilometre or so of out house, on my dog walking route. Problem is, them I kind of become responsible for feeding the mum's and currently feed around 12 a day (on top of our 4 at home). Its taking over... and becoming expensive. But, maybe I can find some more puppies homes through Teakdoor?

Anyway, I hope to get involved here. Have picked up a lot about gardening, chickens, snakes, and of course dogs, over the past years. Have also a list as long as my arm of builders never to use again...

Welcome. Good to have you here. My wife is the official dog lady of the village. Off to the temple daily to feed them.

    Welcome Mendip.

Korat's a decent place to set yerself up. Close to countryside existence, without being too far away from civilization.

    Thanks for the welcome guys!

Luigi... I guess Korat is a decent enough place, although to be honest my favourite part is the west bound lane of Mittraphap heading towards Bangkok...

After many years of living like a gypsy between offshore work trips I finally decided it was time to settle, had two 'red lines' as the politicians say; I wanted to live by the sea and I needed to be close to a decent airport for work trips. Well, I somehow ended up in Korat and failed on both counts! Now, 13 years later we have a small bit of land, a nice house, my 8 year-old daughter's well settled in school, the dogs and chickens seem happy and the wife is close to her family. I guess at some point I have to accept that I'm living in Korat for the duration... although the thought horrifies me.

Oh, and am I one of your what, by the way?

HEADHUNTER is also a korat resident, living in a little up market moo-ban just a couple of minutes from SAVE ONE night market.been here 10yrs.married for over 30yrs.
we to rescued a dog [husky] who had been abandoned but was a chkn.killer before we got him, through our BIL paying a ransom for him,[.nong -kai],although i had been a greyhound owner/trainer for over 20yrs,in the uk.i was ignorant about the dangers here,it took me 5yrs to learn about TICKS,SNAKES,TACARBS AND THE POISONESS FROGS.
before we got our boy,i got to say YES he was our son,the wife had never been a mum so you understand she would do anything for him.she is not like me but she suffers the pain in SILENCE.the past 3yrs.2014-2018 I leant more and more regarding people and their selfish ways.it will be good that we can post our experiances with dogs so others can learn how we did.after a decade on tv.with over 10,000 posts mainly in the pet topic and never had a bad word to say to anyone.i found myself ridiculed by a mod when I asked for help removing certain posts.TOO BUSY was the reply but they found time to give me a 24hr.ban after I apologized.
so hopefull we have a few dog lovers on TD.who might want help or can give help to others.

    Welcome Mendip,

I worked and lived in Korat for 2 years. Nice enough area. Few good places to go ride my motorcycle, Wang Nam Khiao (or Kiew depends on who you ask) area is quite nice. My only heartburn with Korat was no airport (albeit they tried it again and stopped it again) and there is really only one major highway in and out which is typically jammed (especially now with all the construction for the new motorway). The train ride to BKK isn't to bad but again that is an 8hr ride. Downtown highlights were limited to The Mall, Terminal 21 and now the new Central Plaza.

one thing i learnt was to keep your mouth SHUT well i did find it very difficult at first NOW its MORE DIFFICULT after 10yrs.dogs are my life and i try and help where i can.
i have become a very bitter man when it comes to VETS and their greed and not caring one iota about the wefare of animals they use to satisfy the greed.i have learnt a lot about animal medication and watch a lot of vetinary programs on the telle.we had quite a few members from the other planet that used to visit us,just to see and TALK to our beloved.security on the entrance would direct visitors to where we live by telling them the talking dog lives xxxxx.people just couldn't believe what they were hearing when our boy would greet them in his tone of voice.this is one reason why we loved him so much. enough for now,so lets hope others can post their experiances as well it doesn't have to be in Thailand just anywhere.

Your obsessions with dogs is a bit....well....creepy. I understand you love your dogs but from your postings and your ongoing bender about vets and a year later you have not recovered emotionally seems odd.

Might be time to seek some counseling.

    Just saying.

Headhunter… This thread has taken an unexpected turn, but I guess its my thread so I’ll give my tuppence worth. Please feel free to tell me where to go.

As I mentioned, last year we had our twelve year old dog put down. We loved him to bits but he had developed cancer so there was no choice. He’d had a great life but it had come to an end and he was ready to go. Dogs don’t think like humans. Part of keeping dogs is also losing them, whatever the circumstances. You have to accept that. Den is buried, but he made way for two new puppies off the street to have a life so good has come of it. It doesn’t diminish my fondness for him in any way.

You are obviously struggling with the loss of your dog which I can appreciate, but you have to accept that things happen, especially in a country like Thailand.

Ten years ago we lost our first daughter, and THAT is something to truly grieve over. She passed in November 2009 and by early December I was drinking a bottle of whisky a day and taking Xanax at night. I soon realised that was only going to end in one way so I made a decision; either end it there or deal with it and move on. It is such a waste to carry on miserable.

My way was through work. I took on a big project in West Africa in 2010, was away by early January and spent 240 days offshore (and if you’re not familiar with the industry that is a lot). No booze offshore and too busy to think about things, and it worked. Somehow that year our second daughter was conceived, God knows how as I was rarely home but I’m told she does look like me! She turned the family round, there’s no time for self pity with young kids on the scene. The love for my second daughter doesn’t mean I love my first daughter any less but you have to move on. Not a day passes when my first daughter doesn’t enter my thoughts in some way or other, even after ten years. I lock those thoughts away and get on with my life.

Anyway, for what its worth I truly believe you should move on and enjoy life. You obviously love dogs, so get another. Doesn’t mean you love your previous dog any less, but why not make something good of his passing and give another a chance of a life?

Yesterday my wife sent me pictures of a litter of eight near us who will soon be desperate for homes. Once/if we’ve found homes I’ll get the mother speyed so another problem sorted. I’ll be back home in Korat in a couple of weeks so why not come round and choose one?

thanks mendip for your post, keep up the good work that your doing,my problem is i am 74yrs.old so any new dog would outlive his master,if the wife feels she needs another i will go along with her.we had been together over 35yrs.she worked very hard in the uk.and made something of her life.so when we moved here and found our boy SAM,for us having him was not only the iceing on the cake but the mazipan aswell.he gave us so much love we dedicated our lives to making his as best we could.but when we found out all was not well with him after 3yrs.of love, loyalty and giving us a life that made us into such a loving couple and filled that hole that was missing between us.then came our worst nightmare founding out after a massive nose bleed[ 5am.till 7pm.] january 2015 he had parasite infection HEPATOOZON its from him eating a brown dog tick which is very rare and doesnt go away.apart from one vet all the rest that treated him they were the BIGEST PARASITES for 3yrs.once they knew farang love dog too much and he have toooooooooo much money.we vets want some too.i will post about the tricks of dirty deeds of fidling blood tests and yes there are MANY and stories to match.all of which I have copies.they hurt us so badly my wife could never trust another vet, money is no object and they know it.this is why I am so bitter.we do feed some homeless dogs near us wich helps to ease our pain, they are happy but its 14months since our local monk told us to honour our boy, we should do good,so this is our way of giving something back.
my wife would like to be friends on facebook and share their experiances.
    HEADHUNTER.
