Hi all! I'm a Thai student doing a research on retirement of Westerners in Thailand

    Hi all members of Teakdoor.com,

My name is Kanokwan Tangchitnusorn, I'm a Ph.D student of the College of Population Studies (CPS), Chulalongkorn University, and currently I am doing a Ph.D. dissertation about the international retirement migration (IRM) of Westerners in Thailand.

I registered to this forum because I would like to ask whether any of you be interested to participate in my study, which is an online questionnaire.

Hopefully, the research results will become part of policy recommendations, which aim to constitute mutual benefits for both retired expats and Thai society as a whole. In addition, please be informed that Information related directly to you will be kept confidential. Results of the study will be reported as total picture. Any information which could be able to identify you will not appear in the report ka.

Thanks a lot for reading this post.
    KANOKWAN TANGCHITNUSORN, Ms.
Ph.D candidate at College of Population Studies (CPS), Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand

Survey seems to lack areas to apply concerns about the government policies and politics in general. Those were my reasons for leaving after 9 years there. Thailand is a military dictatorship with a very uncertain future and that hardly makes it an attractive retirement destination for most.

I'm not taking the survey. I lived in LOS for six years while working, but never considered retiring there. And it was far more attractive an option when I retired in 2000 than it is now.

Horrible traffic (although not alone in Asia by any means), a language which is very difficult to learn to speak reasonably well without putting in a lot of hard work over a long period of time, a population which generally speaks little to no English, or any other language other than their own, thus limiting your verbal interaction with them to monosyllabic grunts from both sides.

Horrible visa laws. A populace which really doesn't appear to want foreigners in their country. High costs across the board. A military dictatorship runs the place. Totally trashed tourist sites, to which foreigners are charged double to enter.

And Thai food - unquestionably good, but quite tedious as daily fare.

Forget all but two groups. Single male retirees looking for the obvious. Foreigners with a Thai spouse.

I can't imagine anyone else being interested.
