    Smile Landscape designer

    Hi everyone,

Newbie here, but not in Thailand where I have worked and lived these last 10 years. I'm a landscape architect, which is a fantastic job when there is so much planting material to work with !

I am based in Bangkok but work all over Thailand, Laos and SE Asia. I enjoy discovering new places, new people, new architecture, new gardens !

My leisure time being limited, I find it hard to socialize, but I am eager to meet like minded people, share experiences, tips, and go planting trees or visiting places together !

    lol CharleyBoy !

lol CharleyBoy, what can I do for you ?

Don't expect me to come over to mow your lawn or chase down those pesky thrips : the amount of vodka you'd have to pay me for that could sink the Titanic a second time !

Greetings Thai Lao Garden. I am extremely jealous, as I had to downsize a tad, from multiple rai to a smaller patch! At least I got to plant a few things along the way. For me, it's the flowering trees, the names of which, I cannot remember. Welcome!

    There is a solution for....

....or simply call them like 'The-red-one-near-the-pond', 'The-yellow-one-I got-from-Dave' or 'The white-one-that-smells-nice-but-only-at-dusk'....

Thanks for your warm welcome !

@ Blue : I use the usual tools of the trade : Autocad for plan and 2D work (can't warp my head around the 3D functions of that mammoth), Sketchup for 3D when needed, and photoshop to make things look nicer before presentation. Sometimes use Artlantis to render 3D images, MS office, a tiny bit of illustrator...

I also sometimes use pencil and tracing paper to the dismay of my Thai colleagues ! When I offered one of them to use my color pencils, he shrunk on his chair and said "no thanks, I'm not a kid anymore !"

Gipsy : last year I developed a fondness for Pseudomussaenda flava and Malpighia emarginata (can't post a link yet). My clients are usually unfortunately not too much into planting design, and it's quite frustrating to have to stick to the 'classics' to please them...
I love to work with fruits/edible plants, and have a conceptual design for a playground where we can eat everything (or almost). There's also a bio-swale in that concept design, can't wait to develop it further !

Loombucket : well... I am myself limited to a balcony... Thats' a very tiny patch !

If you can't do it yet, I'll do it for you. Welcome to the board.

Hehe... no need to plant anything extra then, here. The restaurant I visit often has a border of Pseudomussaenda flava, nice size but neglected and need to be trimmed. They soon will be mine as the restaurant is moving and I'm inheriting the 'garden'.... Nice primrose yellow flower that looks as if it has been in a embossinig press.

Of the Malpighia emerginata (Thai call them 'Choery') I've got 2... a well established and fruiting one but in the wrong place (in between big trees and can't be replaced anymore) and its berries very, very sour... The second one is a seedling of a slighty sweeter one and enjoying full sunshine...

You happen to have a extensive list of plants, endemic or naturalized in Thailand with their latin names, common names and more importantly, the (local) Thai names? Might be a nice idea for a thread...

    Hi Gipsy,

One always need to plant something new : a garden is a lively place which we keep improving, updating, re-working on at all times ! Once the landscape architect moves out, it's time to move in !

About plants, I do have an extensive list, actually several, but they do not come in a thread : they come as excel files. That tool is as lively as a garden : must be kept accurate, updated, etc... I spent and still regularly spend quite a few hours creating and improving the thing, so i hope you will understand I wish to keep them private. I always gladly use that tool as part of my provision of services.

    Where are you located ? City, suburbs, Isaan . . . ?

CNX, out in the sticks near the mountains, Maejo Agricultural University in between. Surrounded by green, although it turns a bit intoPMS 130 now... Waiting for the first good days of rain.

Yeah, keep your data private, no problem. I've got a small database but only Latin names are used as it gets quiet confusing when a plant is called 'X' in village A and 'Y' a few villages down the road. I try to remember as many Thai local names as possible so I can 'talk' to my friends and neighbours as "You want a cutting of Cochlospermum religiosum?" not work.

Yeah, latin names just won't cut it here, with neighbours or professionals alike. I'm glad you understand I cannot hand this out.

I might visit a landscape teacher in Maejo right after Songkhran, do you believe the air will be clear around that period ?
