    AC and Thailand vehicles

The wife and I are constantly having the following debate concerning AC and our car.

She: Turns off the AC before shutting the car off. Likewise makes certain the AC is off before starting the car.

Me: I don't think turning the AC off or on makes much of a difference.

    What do you experts think?

I have seen it too. I am told it is hard on the system, but not sure.

It's not an issue with newer cars- on older cars the compressor kicks in right away and can put more of a strain on the battery during start-up, but modern electronics keep that from happening.

    A/C

Always a good idea to turn A/C off. Much kinder on vehicle battery & kinder on A/C fan belt. So is lifting wiper arms off windscreen when car is parked in hot weather, saves them sticking to windscreen & when you turn them on burning wiper motor out. If you can be bothered.

Cheers, I wondered about that, since my missus always insists on the AC off on starting the motor.

Have never seen a set of wipers stick to a window yet, At work my car sits for days in 50 deg weather. Also have lived here 11 years and have 3 cars here and never happens to them.
If they are sticking I would guess its due to pollution on the window or cheap blades.
Normaly leave the aircon switched on and never had a issue

Righto Mr Pendant, thanks for that tip. We'll email Toyota, Nissan, Ford and G&M and tell them all to change their advertising brochures and instruction manuals to reflect this...

Being as I is a Enrigsh Teecher, I have no hope of knowing what those car companies build.

I agree with the above comments about battery and belts but I turn the AC off and leave the fan running as I approach my house for a different reason.

Leaving a cold evapourator in the car will get condensation on it .
Bacteria will build up and then the aircon will smell when you turn it on.

I just started turning it off when getting out and turning on when getting in. This made the wife shut up so it was mission accomplished.

One comment I would always take a Japanese car over a European car when it comes to air conditioning. Seems Europeans just cant get it through their thick skulls that its hot here every freaking day. Really hot in fact. I am going out to put a sunscreen on my windshield right now as I forgot to do it and am parked in the direct sun. By 4pm my car will be hot as hell.

My 350,000 baht Suzuki truck has a built in delay so I leave it on. Staff turn it off!

    Technical musings:

Idle speed of car is 750-1000. A/C or C/C system has an idle speed increase circuit which suggests A/C requires more to operate.
Cranking speed prior to starting is in the order of 50 -100 rpm so I don't see what difference leaving it on make anyway. OK if the battery is dodgy then the A/C fan has a draw but...

More likely this whole think is one of the many Thai folklore things that make no logical/technical sense but are followed anyway. Although maybe explains slow traffic after lights go green. Wake up, stall, select Neutral, turn off A/C, turn off blower, restart, turn on A/C, turn on blower, select 1st then drive away. Repeat.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

    No, it's airconditioning.
Comfort cooling is when you turn the fan on.
I don't care what it is, if it freezes my nuts off I'll call it air conditioning.

That's OK if you do not mind being incorrect.

    define 'air conditiononing' then.
In my view, if it cools the air, which is the job of the airconditioner, then it is air conditioning.
Sounds like you're getting fixated with labels.
The air in my car is 21%, same as my house, whatever machine got it there I will call an airconditioner.
As for the red, you're welcome.

    Wiki says.

Air conditioning is the removal of heat from indoor air for thermal comfort.

    Stop argueing!

ps can be heating as well.

used for cooling as well as heating depending on the air properties at a given time

Ha, that's a bit like how the Thais never turn their lights on. It's unbelievable how many people cruise around with lights off in pissing down rain - at least 80% I reckon. Not sure if they're trying to save the bulb, pretty sure they're worried about using too much petrol.

Damn, I should have got my qualifications from Wikipedia instead of the Institute Of Environmental Science.

I'd love to see you plot the psychrometric chart for what happens in your cars.....
