In fact I cannot believe some of the Thai bashers here. I know Terry copped a bit of bad luck but those cases are quite rare and based upon my experiences.
ive had stuff taken from the car during car washes at various one off places, now that i use the same car wash every time they know me as a customer and i dont need to clear the car each time.

theft from houses by workers and maids is common, just ask any thai about it. they know who to trust and not to trust and what precautions to take when strangers are in the house.

And this doesn't happen in other countries and on a far grander scale when compared to Thailand?

I know this is a Thai based forum but I get a bit sick and tired about all the Thai bashing here when the same shit is going down in their own home countries.

thais householders and car owners are usually very careful about taking precautions against theft of small items (and spare wheels) from cars and homes.

they know what often happens. thais are continually on their guard against being cheated, taken advantage of and robbed by other thais.

its not thai bashing at all, its stating facts. an awful lot of workers at that level will take something that is not theirs if the opportunity presents itself.

stealing a spare wheel for instance. thats not something that you can do furtively, and then put it in your pocket and walk away. must have been two or three others who saw the wheel being taken out and then removed from the premises.
how come nobody prevented it happening.

i think petty theft from customers by workers is much more prevalent here than in the west.

And I think your wrong there.

Crime in the west is staggering including auto-theft, house burglaries and other crimes by people who you could not imagine could commit such deeds.

You probably know I live in Pattaya, which is slagged off daily by some bashers here but I can honestly say I feel safer here then in other western cities around the world where I have been a victim of theft in broad daylight.

Maybe farang thieves are smarter then Thais on average but you can bet your bottom dollar Thailand is no worse then places like Australia, England and America (for example) when it comes to petty crime.

i dont disagree with anything you say there, but we're talking about theft and pilfering by tradespeople in thailand who have been given access to your house or car.

i just think there is more of it here.

i too feel safer here from the type of crime you talk about in your post above.

but if i take my car in, or have any work done in the house, theres always one little rascal in the crew that you just wouldnt trust.

Over the years I have had three Thai housekeepers work for me. Not one of them has ever stolen anything from me. I have left them living in my house for months at a time while I have been out of the country. They have kept their own set of keys to my house, car, and motorbike. Nothing has ever gone missing.

Of course, thieving happens all over the world, not just Thailand, but I do find I have to be more on my guard over here, and that takes some getting used to.

For 25yrs, back in the UK, I worked in peoples houses. I was never tempted to take anything that didn't belong to me.
But I did work once with a bloke who used to like rummaging around in the housewives knicker drawers!!!!!!! Now, that's another story.
Do not walk beside me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me for I may not follow. Just pretty much leave me the fuck alone!

Yes, you should take precautions and to avert uncomfortable situations.

Some Thais do steal of course, but I have found that they will only do so if they have no chance of being caught.

Again the chance of being done over here is no greater then in the west and I really feel it is safer here then back in my birth country.

Don't. They all come with the Twat2000 Auto-Personality Changer fitted as standard.

I'm definitely guilty of being too relaxed with leaving stuff in my car at the car wash. I've been luck though until now as when I go to collect it they hand me a little bag with all my spare change, ipod and parking cards in. I'll make an effort to change my ways.

no thief, in any country, thinks they will be caught; they always think they are the smartest arse on earth

Most thieves fear they will be caught, part of the buzz for them I reckon.

I have left parcels on motor bikes in market areas and never lost a thing.

Thai's seem to only lift things if they believe there is no chance that they will be caught and I also feel it is the loss of face threat that makes them this way.

How many Thai thieves do you know personally Doc?

Jesus Christ on a cracker. Dr. Andy thinks I am male.

No maid at that time. No one else in and out of the house but those six workers.

I don't think they mind losing face, if enough money is available to be nicked and they know they won't get prosecuted

I know 2 people who have had fair amounts of money stolen from there apartments, when the only other person who has entered those apartments, the maids, were shown on video, one even left her fingerprints inside his wardrobe

None had any money returned or got a prosecution

I can imagine the B.I.B down the station- "Stupid Farang"

When it comes down to a Thais word against a Farang there will always be one winner
