I think you might have a problem with a tourist visa but each office seems to have their own set of rules so just give it a try.

^Thanks. I'll do that, I wanted to hand over 20k baht in an envelope for their "welfare fund" when applying, but my gf didn't like the idea.

There must be some clerk out there in some branch, that "can be in a hurry" and "fail to spot" a tourist visa from a non immigrant, for a 20-30k discreet contribution...

I wud have done that ages ago if I could. No wife, no work in Thailand, then how can I get a non imm. Mai dai.
Only if I sign up for 1 year at a school to study Thai, 25k plus trip to Singapore to get visa, etc.

Went to the Land Transport Dept. at suk 101, got new 1 year licenses even though I had no visa, just 30 days in my passport. Had to do all the tests there though, but that was easy.

the immigration authority , if all your documents are in order ,
will gice you a letter of residence , which enables you to
apply for a driving license , and you can buy and OWN a bike/car .

Hmm looks like this is step 1 if I want to buy a car and have valid insurance.

Just wanted to confirm that when you get this Thai license, you can also keep your foreign one. Is that correct? I don't fancy trying to drive in Europe on a Thai license.

Sorry if the question sounds dumb but in both USA and Europe you can swap your foreign license for a local one but they will keep the old foreign one. Have done it a few times. US states have different policies - test or swap.

IDP s can be had for UK-ers from RAC or AA by sending them a form and a cheque but I think you pay extra if you use a foreign address so get it returned to a UK address and sent on. It's a complete rip off anyway since it's a printed form with 6 hand completed fields filled in biro. Why should they then only be valid one year?

Also is a non-imm-O (Hull version) with 3-monthly runs good enough?

Friend in BKK just recently renewed his 5 year drivers license for another 5 year drivers license. He was advised by the issuing authority that he was required to present an affidavit from the US Embassy indicating that he wanted a Thai drivers license (renew his Thai drivers license). I recently did the same in Ban Chang but don't recall the requirement of needing to present an affidavit from the US Embassy indicating my intentions of wanting or extending my Thai drivers license. Any one had similar experience?

I renewed mine at the office near Mochit in early October. I did not need that document.

Seems like a run around if you already have one. I have had one for 18 years now.

What is you are Thai, like the missus.
She needed to go to a kind of follow up test for her drives license. She learned to drive a year or so ago, and now she had to go to the office again to take a new test, to get her license renewed. I believe we got 5 years.
I was impressed that Thailand requests novice drivers to do a re-test after one year. Or was it perhaps because we forgot to renew in time...

My wife just renewed her one year licence for five years at mo chit today. Apparently now you can do this 60 days before the one year licence ends. She got the medical certificate down the road, which was hilarious, handed over 60baht and they gave her the certificate. After that she only needed her Thai I'D and hr old licence to get the 5 year job. There were a few farangs there looking a bit more stressed so I imagine it isn't so easy for us.
Did you just make that up?

Aha, interesting. No test for 5 year license if in time before 1 year license expires.
