Driving in Australia on a Thai license

Hope some one can help out here. I am going over to Australia for a few weeks holiday. Catch up with family and friends. Now, I have a Thai drivers license but my Aust one expired long ago. My question is am I legal to drive in Australia on my Thai license as Im only there for a few weeks or will I need to get an international one from Thailand?
    Cheers

Pretty sure you can drive with the Thai one for a few months and then you need to change but others can cofiirm.

Go down and get an international license at your nearest Thai licensing office.

The Aussie cops don't read Thai so good.

^Quite amazing to think that Aussie coppers are being taught Thai, Hindu, and all the other languages. Might as well show them your Thai library card as that will be as valid as a Thai normal driving license I should imagine.

Yup agreed the same as the states. The new ones may pass as they have all the particulars in English. But they are very new. Get an international to be sure.

The "old " Thai license is good, this is based on the fact that its legal in Oz (as long as you resident in Thailand) and becaus last year I was busted for speeding in the QLD & WA and the cops had no problem with my license (and also had no probem with giving me an on the spot fine).

The "new" Thai license which I just got a few weeks ago is better as it has the issue date / expiry date / name / birth date in english.

I asked queensland transport about this 2 years ago, mainly concerning a Thai motorbike licence, was wanting to know if i obtained one here, would it A; be valid in Queensland and B; could i convert it to a QLD licence, the answer was no on both counts.

No, but it sure is fun to whip out a foreign license and watch their expression when they ask for ID!

Did ya like it when they took a 3 K AUD deposit on ya credit card.

I hired one just for 1 day last year.

3 K AUD deposit on Card.

If I had an accident even if it was not my Fault the money would be held until the accident was cleared by the Insurance company.

One would then receive his money back minus any deductible.

    Joking aint Ya.

In Thailand I have a 10 K Baht deductible if I completely destroy the car.

You can drive in the UK for 12 months, from day of entry, on a Thai license. Thereafter a UK test must be sat and passed.

My 23 year old niece from Thailand has just landed in Australia on a 4 year study visa. I told her to get her drivers license before she left as she is allowed to use that in Australia for as long as she is on a student visa.
I imagined her taking my kids to school and playing house wife while my missus and I took off for a few days here and there to Tassie, Sydney etc. Well that dream vanished very quickly when I told her to take me for a drive the other day just to see how good she was! Almost had three heart attacks in the first four corners! We have a lot or practise to do.
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

hmm I didn't know a Thai licence held any weight in Australia. For the same reason monopoly money wouldn't be as valid as real cash.

Last time in Darwin a month ago I asked about my wife coming over again and driving in Aus. They said she'd have to do a test.
