Thread: Helmets for children

As much as I want to, I can't stop the family in law from taking our 3-year old daughter here, there and everywhere on their motorbikes.

I therefore want to buy her a helmet, but where can I get one that isn't made of cardboard (like the thin plastic helmets the locals use around here).

I got one in Pattaya but i'd have thought you could pick one up in most places!

Any of the big supermarkets should have them. I bought one in Lotus. Make sure they have the "safety" mark on them, looks like a cross in a diamond.

It should have a DOT mark on it, but none here will have one.

Correct, Pick out the best you can find, and if later you find a better one, well buy it too as there is always some kid could use the one you have now and it will be a lot better than none, and I have seen none that cost to much if it is needed.

Buying a helmet is one thing.

Getting the out-laws to actually put it on the kids head and do up the strap is another.

I was letting him know that the 'safety' mark on the cheapo helmets here do not mean they meet Euro standards. For sure (in theory) they should be better than ones with no cert, but this is Asia where I'm sure the factory could just print the safety mark on them and it would go completely ignored just like the food safety cert is.

Red Baron in bangkok sells decent helmets.

Not so, although I see where you are coming from, for sure Arai or Shoei are well up there but Shark or HJC out of Taiwan are very good lids coming in at around 5000-7000.
Those would be full face affairs though and not likely suitable for 3 year old on Honda wave.
IMHO the best option is to ban the kid from motorbikes until he is old enough to be fitted with the correct sized helmet, at three years old there is simply nothing available. Age 5 for sure but three i think not.

For a child that young an adult style helmet would likely be even more harm than good in even a minor accident because his neck can't handle the weight and strain and could cause neck injuries in even the most minor accident. It would be far better if you just got him a first rate lightweight bike safety helmet at one of the outdoor shops like Outdoor Outfitters I think it's named in most Central malls as I have for my children..Then he can also use the same one on his bicycle too, good lessons all around.

Any accident that was not overly serious to begin with in which he might get seriously injured with or without a helmet anyway a helmet like I'm suggesting would be plenty of protection without the danger of hurting his neck, not to mention the little-un has to be able to hold his up including G forces (minor to us but not to a 3 year old) and wind..

Maybe because he's not always there? Despite the fact that there are a huge number of traffic fatalities here many Thai's are almost as dumb as Driving Force and will quite happily load an unhelmeted kid onto the back of a motorbike. As they believe farang's are stupid but crazy they will not do so with a farang's kid if the farang says not to and if the farang is actually watching them, as soon as the farang's back is turned the morons will happily take the bareheaded kid zipping away on the bike.

Exactly, I'm not always there - more than 2-3 weeks in the muh-ban and I have to go and see something different/talk with someone else.

I like the idea with the bicycle helmet. As far as I can see, an European bicycle helmet will probably be better than a Thai plastic hat.

A top quality bicycle helmet is the away to go, it will provide good protection with simplicity of use and light weight comfort plus get him in the habit of wearing one early and soon he'll feel special, my children do and when the other neighbors children see it they soon want one themselves trickle down effect, that happens wherever we live and soon the entire neighborhood has helmets..

Lead by example, I try to do that on here as well but most of these creative and intellectually challenged schmucks are too far past their sell by date and now lost causes..

As mentioned previously the tough part is now trying to get the local lazies to utilize your good common sense..

^are you seriously saying a bicycle helmet would withstand an impact with the road at 70MPH? There's not a bicycle helmet in the world rated for that. You do realise that he's talking about using bicycle helmets on motorbikes here?
