I'm sure you can hire cars in Laos, so why could you not drive there?

I got stopped on a motocycle in Vientiane; just showed them my UK car license and all was fine.

Should not of gone the wrong way down a one way; forgot they drove on the right

^ I understand that, it was driving on the right before the turn that confused me

So let me get this straight, driving on the right side of the road confused you into thinking that a no entry sign meant entry?

If we ever have to travel together I think I'd better drive.

That reads like some rubbish excuse you put on the insurance claim form when trying to wriggle out of being at fault in a road traffic accident

    Yes it is legal.
I have never seen a thai insurance that covers you for Laos though.
I think you will need to pay for cover when you enter Laos.

When you go through the Nong Khai border there is an insurance office where you can buy 2 week insurance for Laos. They will point you in the direction of it while they process you. Takes about an hour and 5 different desks/offices to get all the paperwork done.
Last time I did it I decided not to buy the insurance and bloody typical I got stopped at a checkpoint near Luang Prabang. UK license was accepted but lack of insurance landed me a fine of nearly 300 baht paid on the spot. The paperwork issued gave a 7 day waiver against being fined again so was quite good.
I think there are 3 check points (not always manned) and a couple of tolls to pay but it is almost free, cant remember how much but very cheap.
Its a cracking drive and the twistiest road I have ever driven in my life.
Fill up when ever you can, as there are not petrol stataions everywhere.

I was there 12-14 months ago. Roads were ok, not great but perfectly ok in my Civic. A few pot holes here and there and quite slow going because of the amount of people walking and on bicycles and LOTS of animals wandering around. Had to hit the brakes a few times coming round a blind corners with cow etc standing there in front of you.
