Had the same problem on a Ford pickup a year or so ago. It cost me 30K baht for a new Ford cylinder head complete with camshaft, valves, gasket set etc and fitting. Not cheap but probably about right for a manufacturer's own part. The problem on inspection was a small crack between two of the combustion chambers but I guess it could be anywhere on the OP's head. Previous posters are right to say that a cracked head usually requires replacement: skimming is for a warped head, which is also common following overheating, especially with alloy heads. The latter isn't such an expensive job and I have done it myself a few times in the West (sending the part to a machine shop for the skim). If the engine was old a complete replacement reconditioned unit may be worth considering, depending what the difference in price is.
Gentlemen looks like we've been deceived yet again by a wily female.
No harm done and an enjoyable thread hijack occurred in the process.
Lily:
A nice older Toyota is certainly worth fixing and you should without a doubt find a different mechanic to diagnose the problem.
