I didn't come up with the used car prices in Thailand.

Cars don't depreciate 30% when you drive them off the forecourt here. FACT.

    Not in Thailand.
    True.

The popular Jap cars & trucks take a few years to depreciate by that level.

So Tud what you are telling me is that in an accident between lets use a Bangkok bus for example and a Toyota Yaris the Yaris would have less damage than a Toyota Fortuner would have?
Somehow I think that your argument is flawed. (f*cked)
Hands up anyone in the Forum who would rather be driving a Toyota Yaris rather than a Toyota Fortuner when in an accident with a Bangkok Bus?
I,ll take my chances in my Fortuner thank you very much you can keep your Toyota mess tin I mean Yaris. My odds are definitely better than the Yaris.
But I will contact William Hill and see what the betting would be.

    I'm not talking about damage.

The issue is not how much damage a vehicle takes but how it handles that damage and how it protects the occupants.

What I am saying is that you'd be more likely to survive a serious accident in a Yaris.

It has a Euro NCAP rating of five stars. NCAP are the definitive automotive safety tests. Even the manufacturers listen when NCAP speaks!

The Fortuner is basically a Vigo and in tests they have not fared too well. The Fortuner does not have enough safety features to get it a five star rating. In it's level of equipment in Thailand, it would be lucky to achieve 3 stars IMO.

I understand that a bigger car gives you that feeling of security, but that's all it is, a feeling. In the same way you'd probably feel safer in a D-Max, but the D-Max is mortally unsafe in an accident for the driver.

It is funny that you picked the Yaris as a comparison as I said it is one of the safest small cars around. I've just bought a Yaris for the missus. That has no bearing on my comments about vehicle safety BTW, merely coincidence!
Mortals you defy the Gods, I sentence you to travel among unknown stars, until you find the Kingdom of Hades, your bodies will stay as lifeless as stone.

I would trust very few people in this country to maintain a vehicle properly. That's the only reason why I bought new. I also intend to keep it for a very long time. With as much deceit and lies and snaky kunts crawling around here, combined with little to no buyer protection, I'd imagine buying a used car in Thailand is like Russian roulette.

Very true Tex, you really need to be careful about what you buy, Thais are not known for there skill to maintain things, so if you buy a 2nd hand then check as much as you can, ownership record, service-book, check the welding points to see if it has been in an accident.
I've bought a Passat Tdi 2nd hand, it had one owner from new a 2004 model and I've had no problems so far....But then again, I might just be lucky.

Not yet. It may get forced induction in the not too distant future though...

It will be getting new audio and shoes first. Looking at 17s or 18s if I can squeeze them in under the lowered suspension.

^ 18's will fit. But I would not spend anymore cash than that. Tuning a puny engine is just not worth it.
Do it proper and drop a bigger engine. Try shoe horning the Camry V6 engine and drivetrain in there.

I hired one of those in the UK a month or so ago. I don't know if it'd be exactly the same but it was a good little car. Comfortable, a reasonable turn of speed and economical.

My g/f's brother knew I was looking for a car for his sister so I drove out to Mahachai to look at a second hand Jazz his Policeman friend was selling through a local garage. It was in terrible condition. I spotted over a dozen things wrong with it just giving it the once over. I am still wondering why the garage is attempting to sell this car with absolutely no effort to tidy it up! You'd think they would at least give it a clean and fix all the blemishes on the body work to try and shift it from the forecourt! They have done absolutely nothing! It even stunk inside from stale smoke and BO!

I took it for a test drive but when I returned I immediately said I wasn't interested, regardless of the price. They wanted 450,000THB for it! The nerve!

Of course the locals were not too happy and the g/f and brother lost face but they must have rocks in their head to think anyone is going to buy a car in that condition from a second hand dealer for list price.

The brother's Policeman friend was obviously angry that I didn't want it. Makes you wonder what these idiots expect sometimes.

20's will fit but they look ridiculous IMO and will rub over bumps.

It has been lowered already so I'll have to see whether 18's are still a viable option.

As to the puny engine it has the vvt-i 1.5L 110bhp engine which is sufficient for driving around the city. A turbo would take it up to around 150bhp without affecting reliability.

I might leave the modifications to just audio and cosmetic.

So you'll end up with a fancy looking car with lots of spoilers, a big set of wheels, and a 1.5L standard engine.....You've been in Thailand to long mate...
