Car Safety Seat Hunting (for 2 year old)

It’s time again to enjoy some tropical weather, so I, missus and child will go to Thailand next month.

I have declared a total veto against transporting our children in the back of a pickup, so I guess we need a car safety seat for our 2 year old daughter.

Does anyone know where can we buy a proper car seat?

We will be touring the south, so it’s not possible for us to visit some fancy baby shop in Bangkok

so where are you coming from then?

and bangkok was going to be my option....

are you hiring a car or using taxi? cos IME the car seats all require seatbelts to be fitted to work....

and very very very few taxis in thailand have seatbelts in the back

We had a safety course at work a few months ago with this awful happy clappy type bint from the north of England.

The subject of seat belts came up, and she said "I never get in a taxi without seat belts, you and your staff should all do the same"

I responded that she must spend a lot of time walking in Bangkok.

She said "No, I check each taxi and I always get one"

I told her at the end of the record she was a 'pedalling untruths' and there is no value to a course that just pays lip service to safety and doesn't deal with the actual realities of where we work. Lost all credibility with that crap.

Does anyone know where can we buy a proper car seat?
Very vague question seeing as you only tell us where you are not going nor how you are getting there.

I bought a seat in Australia when my son was born and brought it with me on the plane (cargo or place it on one of the seats)

A few shops have them in Bangkok now, but since ya dont wanna go there i cant really help you.

If you happen to be visiting Pattaya, there is a place in North Pattaya which has all sorts of imported gear for babies, including car seats.. We bought a pram there a couple of years ago and it's still going strong. We have since passed it on to the BIL.

Coming from Sukhumvit Road, the shop is on the left just before the dolphin roundabout.

The only car seats I have seen in Thailand are really expensive. Around 15,000 baht.

Why not bring your own? Thats what we do (or borrow from a friend). It is not considered baggage. Prams and car seats fly free no matter what else you bring.

In our industry we have to take safety very seriously, they even link our bonuses to it.

We have loads and loads of courses, but Mrs Happy Clappy contribution was as welcome as a chocolate teapot.

fair enuff then, but certainly most industries treat safety considerations as a pain in the ass.

Me too - I always take the front seat if I am travelling on my own. I have yet to experience a taxi that didn't have seatbelts in the front.

As for SN - bring your own. For a two year old, there are car seats available that are good quality, light and safe, with detachable backs - convenient if you are going on a plane. Doubt if you can buy them in southern Thailand, though.
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...

About time! Thanks heaps for that because if they are only 3-5,000 baht I will buy two of them and leave them over there as it is a pain in the arse flying with them.

Yes always available in the front, I paraphrased what she said, she was referring to the back seat, the extended debate was too long to recall or even paraphrase.

Exactely, they are really a pain when you also have to drag a suitcase or two, a small child and god knows what else.

Central might be an option. We are flying to Hat Yai, so maybe we can ask someone to try their luck at the local Central.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Nahh, we will get more children and keep using it - or maybe the missus siblings will one day understand road safety and start using car seats for their children.

Soi Cowboy children aren't my style, so I order them at home and get them free of charge.

The imported once from Europe/Japan go up that high yes. Car seats for children aged 1 - 3.5 years or so tend to be the most expensive as well. However good deals can be had when they're on sale..

The best place I think is at Central department stores. According to there website they have a store in Had Yai and Phuket (both are good places to start a tour of the South..)

Also (this directed more at expats living here longer term), even if it IS 15,000 baht then I submit that this is still one of the cheaper 'accessories' that people typically stick in or on their car, and quite possibly the most essential one. By far.

[ Rant at Thais driving a fancy Merc or Beemer with mag wheels and bells and whistles but with their kid jumping around without as much as a seatbelt goes here ]

I have a really nice one that Wayne Jnr has nearly grown out of. We're in Bangkok and not sure how we'd get it to Hat Yai. If interested I could take some photos etc.
